4 1.0 INTRODUCTION This manual is intended for all users of the Geosense Smart Mux Interface (SMI). 1.1 General Description The Geosense SMI is a readout unit designed to manually acquire and store readings from sensors connected to data acquisition systems, which typically will include: Geosense Analogue Remote Smart Mux Geosense Digital Remote Smart Mux The Geosense SMI can also manually acquire readings from Geosense Digital Tilt Sensors and Tilt Arrays. The SMI has been designed to enable easy manual collection of data from Remote Smart Mux enclosures while the central G8 Data logging unit is still to be installed. 1.2 Device Compatibility The following Geosense Products are compatible and can be interrogated by the SMI. Analogue Smart Mux Digital Smart Mux (DMUX) Tilt Array (MUMS) Digital Tilt Sensors (IPTM) 1.3 Theory of Operation The Geosense SMI uses the RS485 serial communication protocol to communicate with compatible target devices. Since these devices use custom commands, devices not listed in section 1.2 will not function with the SMI. Since the RS485 protocol allows for multiple devices to be connected to a single bussed string, the SMI can communicate with multiple devices from one location, given that the guidelines for the RS485 standard are adhered to. The SMI can be connected at any of the Node locations shown in the illustration below. It is important to remember if the SMI is placed at either end (Node 1 or Node N) of the string the 120Ω resistor must be turned on. 4

7 4.0 DELIVERY This section should be read by all users of the Geosense SMI. 4.1 Packaging The Geosense SMI is packed for transportation to site. Packaging is suitably robust to allow normal handling by transportation companies. Inappropriate handling techniques may cause damage to the packaging and the enclosed equipment. The packaging should be carefully inspected upon delivery and any damage MUST be reported to both the transportation company and Geosense. 4.2 Handling The Geosense SMI is a precision measuring instruments. They and their associated equipment should always be handled with care during transportation and storage. Once the shipment has been inspected it is recommended that the Geosense SMI remains in its original packaging for storage or transportation. Cable should also be handled with care. Do not allow it to be damaged by sharp edges, rocks for example, and do not exert force on the cable as this my damage the internal conductors.. DO NOT DROP AS THIS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO INTERNAL COMPONENTS 4.3 Inspection It is important to check all the equipment in the shipment as soon as possible after taking delivery and well before installation is to be carried out. Check that all the components detailed on the documents are included in the shipment. Check that the equipment has not been physically damaged. 4.4 Storage The Geosense SMI contains electronics and whilst they are designed for outside use and mounted within a water resistant enclosure the internal circuit board can be affected by excessive moisture, dust and temperature. When not in use they should be turned off and stored in a cool, dry location. 7

9 5.0 OPERATION contd SMI Configuration. Home > 1. SMI Configurations The SMI configurations menu is used to alter the main settings of the Geosense SMI for each project. It is important to remember each project created has its own unique configuration ID Number Home > 1. SMI Configurations > 1. Id number The ID number should match that of the Geosense G8 Data Logger module ID which is connected or to be eventually connected to the device. This is especially important when configuring the Geosense SMI for the Geosense SmartMux since the Mux will only respond from a device with the correct ID. WARNING: During its first communication session the Geosense Smart Mux will store the ID of the device connected to it and from that moment will only respond to that ID. For this reasons users must ensure that the correct ID configured in the Geosense SMI Project matches that of the G8 PLUS logging module used for the data acquisition system Set date/time Home > 1. SMI Configurations > 2. Set date/time This option is used to set the Date and Time of the device.
