4 3. The command used most often is Set Frequency. A shortcut to this command is available in the demonstration software window (Figure 3). Figure 3: Set Frequency The user can select the output frequency by using the Frequency drop-down menu. The value for Wavelength will be updated automatically. If a value for Wavelength is selected, the value for Frequency will be updated automatically. Click Select to send this command to the module. In the Response window, the returned status should be OK (Figure 4). Figure 4: Response Status

5 The MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) requires that the module respond with a Module Busy response if the command takes more than 5 ms to complete. The status of the previous command can then be monitored using the LINK + LCSMON + Read command. A shortcut to this command is available with the Last Cmd Status button. When this button is activated, the Status field will be updated with the status of the last command sent. Note: This function is performed automatically when the Channel Select button is clicked. The Last Cmd Status button is intended for use with individual commands and will not appear until an individual command has been activated. 4. The Tunable MSA command structure uses Objects (MODULE, LINK, CONFIG ) and parameters. Each Object has its own set of Parameters that the user can read or write to, depending on access rights. The access rights status (Figure 5) is shown in the demonstration software window. Figure 5: Access Rights Status 5. To read Access Rights Status, use the MODULE object with parameter ARSMON, click the Read option button, and click Send Command. The returned status should be OK. The comment box should read Access Rights = Standard (Figure 6). Figure 6: Results of Access Rights Status

6 6. To change Access Rights Status to Customer Rights, use the MODULE object with parameter ARSMON, click the Write option button, and click Send Command. The returned status should be OK. The comment box should read Access Rights = Customer. Customer Rights are required to change certain default settings. For complete details on rights requirements, consult the MSA Compatible Commands section of the 3205/3206 Command Set document. Figure 7: Customer Rights

7 Commonly Used Commands The communication protocols and command set are described in the 3205/3206 MSA Compliant Control Mode Command Set. A number of commonly used commands are described below. For more details, please consult the command set document or a JDSU Field Applications Manager. Get firmware release version of module MODULE + FWRELMON + Read This will return the module s firmware release as defined by the vendor. This information is important for troubleshooting and will be helpful when contacting JDSU for technical support. Reset the module MODULE + RESET + Write This command resets the module to the initial power-up state. This initial state can be defined using the CONFIG + STORE command. The store command may take some time to process. Get last command status LINK + LCSMON + Read This command returns the status of the last command sent by the host. This command is available from the demonstration software window by clicking Last Cmd Status. Set frequency (read/write) SOURCE + FREQSET + Read/Write The read command returns the current frequency value. The write command allows the user to set the laser frequency The returned value is measured in GHz and is equal to the actual frequency minus GHz. Set optical power (read/write) SOURCE + OPWRSET + Read/Write The read command returns the programmed optical power. The write command sets the programmed optical power. This value may be stored in nonvolatile memory by using SOURCE + STORECHAN. Read alarm status register SOURCE + ASRMON + Read This command returns the value of the Alarm Status Register: Bit 0 (MTA): Module Temperature Alarm. MTA = 1 when measured module temperature is out of range Bit 1 (PWA): Output Power Alarm. PWA = 1 when module output power falls below threshold. This threshold can be set using SOURCE + OPWTHRSET. Bit 2 (UNLK): Wavelength Lock Alarm. UNLK = 1 when the wavelength is not locked to the set value. Bit 7 (VSA): Vendor Specific Alarm. VSA = 1 when one of the JDSU-specific alarms is active. The JDSUspecific alarms may be queried using A_ALARM + AARSMON. Read alarm status register A_ ALARM + AASRMON + Read Bit 0 (LASTA): Laser TEC Temperature Alarm. LASTA = 1 when measured laser temperature is out of range. Bit 1 (LOCTA): Locker TEC Temperature Alarm. LOCTA = 1 when measured locker temperature is out of range. Bit 2 (RESET): Reset or Undervoltage Alarm. RESET = 1 when unit has been reset other than by software command. Bit 3 (EOL): Laser Currents at End of Life. EOL = 1 when any laser section requires current greater than end-of-life value. Bit 4 (CKSUM): EEPROM Checksum Error. CKSUM = 1 if there is a checksum error when reading EEPROM data. Default data will be used instead. Bit 5 (OL): Open Loop Mode. OL = 1 if open loop mode has been set. Bit 6 (LOFF): Laser Off. LOFF = 1 if laser optical power has been turned off by command. Enable/disable laser output (read/write) SOURCE + LASERSEL + Read/Write This command enables or disables laser output. The default mode is laser enabled.

8 Troubleshooting/FAQ When I try to send commands, the response status is Module Busy. This response indicates the selected operation requires more than 5 ms to complete. The MSA requires that the module respond to the host within 5 ms. If the operation is not finished (for example, wavelength changes) restoring defaultparameters or saving new setup parameters, the module must return a Module Busy response. The status of these commands may then be checked at a later time using the LINK + LCSMON command. Certain commands that access nonvolatile memory may require several seconds to complete. There is no power or too little power coming out of the laser. Make sure that the power supply is on and connected correctly. Check to make sure that the fiber optic connector is clean or that your splice is intact. If the power is lower than you expect, verify that the VOA is set at the desired level. What is the optical output power variation from channel to channel? Between channels, the output power variation is ±0.5 db through end of life. For a single channel, the output power variation is ±0.5 db over temperature and through end of life. What happened when I change channels? Is any stray light emitted into other channels? No stray light is emitted into other channels. A blanking procedure is used during the channel switching process. The blanked power level is less than 30 dbm. A pre-lock process ensures that the output power is always below 30 dbm until the new channel has been selected with an accuracy of ±10 GHz. The power is then ramped to the intended level with a frequency accuracy of ±1.5 GHz at end of life. What is the switching time between channels? The switching time is less than 10 ms from receipt of the switching command. What is the difference between closed loop and open loop operation? In closed loop operation, power and wavelength are regulated by the locker circuit. The section biases may not be changed. Under open loop conditions, the section biases may be changed. However, the power and wavelength loops are disabled, so accuracy can no longer be guaranteed. Is there a way to add channel tagging/pilot tone modulation to the laser output? This is an optional feature. Contact your JDSU Field Applications Manager for more information. What are the aging characteristics of JDSU tunable lasers? Contact your JDSU Field Applications Manager for a tunable laser qualification report and reliability white papers.

9 Handling Considerations Although the TLA has been designed to be physically robust, use care during handing and installation. Package Because the complete TLA is not hermetically sealed, do not immerse it or spray it with cleaning solutions or solvents. Take appropriate ESD precautions when installing, using, or removing the tunable laser assembly. Fiber and Connector The fiber connector handling/protection cap and the fiber pigtail materials can deform at temperatures above +85 C. Keep optical connector clean and free of surface particles. Keep the optical connector handling/protection cap in place when the fiber pigtail is not mated. Oil-free canned air or nitrogen with an extension tube may be used to help remove surface particles. Observe normal industry procedures for handling and cleaning. Use care in controlling the minimum fiber bend radius (25 mm). Make sure that the protection cap is debris-free and clean prior to reinstalling it on the optical connector.
