2 Why do we need Interoperability? 5 years from now there will be a suite of international interoperability standards that will lead to a cloud of clouds, or inter-cloud, a future where there will be tight integration between multiple clouds. 6 CloudWATCH focus on interoperability & standards Europe: overa decade of standards development and implementation through R&Dfor distributed computing infrastructures Leveraging considerable expertise in standards development, implementation and testing over the past decade. Key role in shaping standards roadmaps for cloud computing. CloudWATCH will provide a portfolio of European and international use cases covering technical requirements, policy and legal requirements, including Service Level Agreement management. CloudWATCH will develop common standard profiles and testing around federation of cloud services. Why is this important? A profile on a standard clarifies in an unambiguous way how a standard has to be interpreted and implemented based on a specific use case. This overcomes ambiguities in specifications and the lack of real interoperability across different interfaces. 6

7 EGI Cloud Infrastructure Platform EGI: a cloud infrastructure platform to support the full spectrum of research communities Open standards by design defining the interfaces and exchange points between the services exposed to the public. Production roll-out in Spring Use cases from research communities are key to steering and fine tuning its capabilities. The collaboration between EUBrazilOpenBio & BioVeL is a very good example of this approach for biodiversity scientific communities: ecological niche modelling. EU-Brazil Cooperation EUBrazilOpenBio: provides the extended ENM service. EGI Federated Cloud, provides the computing resources. BioVeLprovides the use case. 7

10 Why ETSI CSC? Slidescourtesyof CSC Group Report focused on gap analysis from the SLA, SEC and IOP perspectives. Overall methodology: Preliminaries UCs activities Use cases (UCs) elicitation. Create list with relevant cloud standards/specifications/others (IOP, SLA, SEC). Choose representative UCs. For each UC, create activities from 3 perspectives: acquisition, operation, termination. Where applicable, identify generic activities (i.e., apply to all UCs). Gap analysis Map listed standards/specifications to UCs activities (either generic or specific). Add related work (e.g., white papers). If no applicable standard/specification exists, this activity becomes a gap. European Cloud Initiative

11 Some Initial Conclusions Standards situation is evolving rapidly and ETSI CSC s report can reflect only a snapshot in time. For Cloud Industry a set of standards have been developed For SMEs as Cloud providers adopting the existing standards for SLA creation and negotiation in order to support their customers could turn into a unique selling point once standards for SLA vocabularies become available. For administrations, unlike SMEs, have more resources available for the expression of their requirements and the activities of the Acquisition phase. For Govt. authorities, the legal environment for cloud computing is highly challenging. Solutions are need at national and multinational(e.g. EU) and international levels. Cloud is not completely new: many standards used for cloud are not cloud specific, however they may still apply and will continue to evolve to reflect cloud scenarios. Cloud interoperability standards are being actively developed with significant progress in standardizing compute & storage APIs, IaaS data models and high level cloud vocabularies. The SEC analysis shows the need for further standardization efforts in the area of accountability, cloud incident management and integration with legacy system 11

12 What can EU & Brazil do to ensure Interoperability? Follow & Join some form of interoperability testing in research activities (ie: Cloud plugfests, IEEE InterCloud, EGI Federated Cloud, Industrial Research Programmes) Help to solidify the industry without disrupting & slowing down innovation Learn & Know how to use standards (different game between products & utility world) To create competitive cloud markets with multiple providers -exclude all IP from software principles (limiting it to solely expressions (ie code) Encourage young researchers to explore industry +academic grant programmes Continue to Build, Explore & Experiment together! 12
