Workshop Chair: Christopher Burg, Manager IT Systems & Operations, American Transmission Company 8:30 AM SESSION I: WINDS OF CHANGE TECHNOLOGY FORCES OF TRANSFORMATION FOR UTILITIES Presenter: Larry Cochrane, Utilities Industry Technology Strategist, Microsoft Inc. Presenters: Technology subject matter experts from American Transmission Co. Description: Larry Cochrane, former Vice President of R&D for Areva and current Utility Industry Technology Strategist with Microsoft, joins a group of subject matter experts from ATC to explore a few of the key transformational forces that are impacting utility IT, including: Death of Phone Companies: How the modernization of Ma Bell from circuit provider to Internet data company impacts operations for utilities Cloud Data Integration: How IT must gather data across cloud-hosted and on-premise services to provide information that feeds business workflows and reporting Utility IT vs Consumer IT: The impact of IT consumerization in a utilities world of legacy technology Field Technology: The increasing drive towards applications and data in the field, and the challenges it creates 11:00 AM SESSION II: REAL WORLD CYBER THREATS & IMPACTS ON UTILITIES Presenter: Mark Binkelman, Team Leader Cyber Security, American Transmission Co. Description: With the pervasiveness of new and creative cyber threats on the rise with no end in sight, it is critical for utility IT to be able to recognize the cyber threats that impact utilities directly. ATC has researched and spent resources identifying the real world cyber security threats that exploit utilities. Our presentation will bring to life new perspectives concerning real cyber threats, where they come from, who is the ultimate target, what is the goal of the threat, and the impact on utilities. 12:00 PM LUNCH: We will have a catered-in lunch at American Transmission Company. 1:00 PM SESSION III: CYBER SECURITY INITIATIVES AT NCEA UTILITIES STATUS UPDATES Moderator: Christopher Burg, Manager IT Systems & Operations, American Transmission Co. Description: Cyber security is one of the most critical components of utility IT. During this session, all NCEA members will get a chance to express specific aspects of their utilities cyber security efforts. Each utility will have 10-minutes to speak (no PowerPoints used) on their cyber implementations and experiences, via an around the room cyber security status update report. Please be prepared to discuss cyber initiatives at your utility so we can all learn from one another! 2:00 PM SESSION IV: NCEA UTILITY IT LABOR BENCHMARKING SUMMARY Presenter: Ken Voss, Director Information Technology Services, ALLETE-Minnesota Power Description: At our 2015 NCEA IT workshop in Duluth, the members present agreed to complete a survey aimed at identifying the FTE support levels each utility has in place to support the services consumed by their company. The survey s originator, Ken Voss of ALLETE will convey an executive summary of the results of the benchmarking survey that breaks down the major IT services generally consumed by a utility, and how many FTEs utilities have in place to support them. 3:00 PM SESSION V: CIS EXECUTION AT NCEA UTILITIES STATUS UPDATE Moderator: Christopher Burg, Manager IT Systems & Operations, American Transmission Co. Description: The customer information system is one of the most important components of utility IT; horror stories are told of CIS Projects being notorious for failing to meet expectations, being over-budget and not on time. NCEA members will address their CIS experiences in an around the room status update, where each company will have ten minutes (no PowerPoints used) to describe where they currently are with CIS. Be prepared to discuss CIS at your utility (chose your speaker) so we can learn from each other. 4:00 PM ADJOURN: 5:00 PM BOARD BUS AT THE MARRIOTT HOTEL FRONT/MAIN ENTRANCE: Description: Attendees will dress casual, and bring weather appropriate jackets/etc. for a dinner cruise. The bus will leave from the front main entrance of the Milwaukee Marriott West Hotel. We will also return via bus to the hotel. 6:00 PM GROUP DINNER CRUISE: DINNER CRUISE OF MILWAUKEE RIVER & LAKE MICHIGAN ON THE LAKESIDE SPIRIT Description: Our group will board the Lakeside Spirit vessel for a cruise and dinner through downtown via Milwaukee River and into Lake Michigan, inside the breakwater along the shoreline providing great views of Milwaukee. The Lakeside Spirit is a bi-level vessel with an open air top level, perfect for our group. We will disembark from the vessel and return to the hotel around 9:00 PM. Description: We will start our day with a unique opportunity to see American Transmission Company s newly updated Transmission System Control Center, located within ATC s corporate headquarters. 9:15 AM SESSION VII: UTILITY IT ROUNDTABLE & OPEN FORUM DISCUSSION Moderator: Christopher Burg, Manager IT Systems & Operations, American Transmission Co. Description: Be prepared to discuss a host of utility IT issues with your peers. Questions will be asked, experience will be revealed, peers will assist peers in making all of our NCEA member utilities better and more effective in our demanding utility IT discipline! 12:00 PM RECOGNITION, BOX LUNCH & ADJOURN: Workshop recognition, and re-confirm location and co-chairs for the 2017 workshop.
