4 OpenStreetMap: The Wikipedia of Maps Have others tried their hand at crowd-sourcing map data as well? Absolutely. Waze and Google or, just Google now provide similar mechanisms to improve their maps, based mostly on OSM s innovations. With one big catch. It is very much their map. Not yours. OpenStreetMap is different. All of the quality data contributed is openly available just like Wikipedia. So, anyone can download, experiment and play with it freely. 8 What is the Open Data Program? Summary Launched on January 31 st with a focus on open imagery and derivatives for disaster response DigitalGlobe will publically release pre and post event imagery and crowdsourced data layers for a select few major natural disasters each year This program formalizes what we ve been doing in an ad hoc fashion for humanitarian response (e.g. Nepal earthquake, Hurricane Matthew) and aims to reduce any confusion about our role moving forward Imagery and data will be released under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license

9 How do we determine which events? DigitalGlobe has developed an activation protocol modeled after Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team s (HOT) protocol Criteria: Sudden onset natural disaster, such as earthquakes, hurricanes/typhoons/tropical storms, tsunamis, etc FirstLook event service has been activated The event affects developing countries without resources for robust emergency response Disaster is categorized as a major event The internal DigitalGlobe committee agrees that the event meets the open data activation criteria based on geographic scope, humanitarian impact, and expectation of need What s included? Imagery Pre-event imagery of area affected Post-event imagery of area affected Crowdsourcing Data Layers Damaged structures Impassable roads Areas of major destruction *all licensed by CC BY-SA 4.0

10 Impacts on the Ground Rapid data deployment to enable improved emergency response on the ground, including determining ingress/egress routes, areas for rescue missions, coordinating deployment of resources, evidencing the extent of damage and more Curation of best-in-class, timely data over affected areas where often there is little to no current, usable information

11 How do you get involved? 1. Download the imagery for your own non-commercial use 2. Sign up for alerts to know when we ve activated 3. Become a formal partner to the Open Data Program Request activations based on criteria Help spread the word when there s an open data event
