2 2017 was an incredible year for ITDRC - in so many ways. With a shotgun start in January, the first half of the year was packed with a variety of disaster responses, community recovery projects, and industry events. We worked diligently to forge new relationships, recruit volunteers, and expand our response capabilities. Although our metrics seemed normal, it just felt like the tempo was much faster than previous years. Perhaps it was the long term forecast; or maybe a little intuition - but somehow, we knew we needed to be prepared for a busy Hurricane season - and we were. Last year brought forth two of the largest operations we ve launched since our inception in 2008, with 3 major hurricanes impacting the U.S. and its territories. It wasn t the size or damage from the storms that presented the biggest challenge - it was the logistics of managing a response in the Caribbean. Fortunately, the heart of the technology community rallied behind us and enabled us to provide connectivity and communications to benefit millions of survivors in their greatest time of need. As you read through this annual report, it is my hope that you will better understand the impact that ITDRC has on communities in crisis. 4 volunteers Volunteer Growth Volunteer Types Thanks to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, ITDRC saw significant volunteer growth in Our volunteer base grew 70% over the previous year, and we expect continued growth for the foreseeable future. Volunteers logged more than 40,000 hours in 2017, providing communities with an estimated fair market value of more than 1.6 million dollars. In additional to the significant increase in individual volunteers, ITDRC also gained access to thousands more through corporate employee volunteering programs. 6 Hurricane Tech Task Force As a charter member of FEMA s Tech Sector Collaboration program, formerly known as NET Guard, ITDRC regularly collaborates with public and private sector organizations to theorize response to large scale disasters, and develop a common operating picture. We realized the benefits of our pre-planning when we established a Hurricane Tech Task Force to help coordinate the tech sector humanitarian response to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. This initiative not only enabled tech sector partners to collaborate on service delivery to survivors and evacuees, but introduced partners to the value ITDRC offers in terms of response training, asset management, and deployment logistics. 9 Looking Forward Looking ahead to 2018 and our 10th anniversary we will continue to build our response capacity and expand our technical capabilities, with an emphasis on sustainability. It has become quite evident that disasters are becoming more intense, impacting more communities, and causing more damage; requiring more time and resources for recovery. This translates to ITDRC needing more volunteers and strategic partners, and physical and financial resources to keep up with the growing demand for our services. If we ve learned anything from the last 10 years, we know that few communities have the technical resources to recover from a disaster alone; and there is no shortage of skilled volunteers and socially responsible organizations willing to help. By forging more alliances within the tech and communications sectors, we re able to help unify industry s humanitarian response to a disaster, ensuring critical resources reach responders and survivors faster - and benefit the whole community. This year we will also invest in our fleet, logistics, and warehousing strategies to ensure we maintain a constant state of response readiness, and are able to fulfill resource requests more efficiently. We re extremely proud of our humble beginnings; and even more proud to be a volunteer driven organization. However, voluntary governance is often best effort. In order for ITDRC operations to become more sustainable, we must invest in ourselves by hiring a core team of professionals to provide continuity of operations, and accountability to our stakeholders. We re excited about 2018 and beyond, and look forward to your continued support. There are thousands of communities counting on us to answer their call, and we can t let them down.
