6 Research and Technology Objectives for EDA! To fulfil medium to long term European defence capability needs! To establish agreed European R&T priorities! To manage or coordinate R&T projects, on behalf of Member States! To promote less dependence on critical key technologies! To contribute to build a competitive European Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB), including SMEs and Research Centers! To increase synergies, in co-ordination with the European Commission and ESA which are different but complementary from NATO/RTO and may be could be addressed through EDA-ACT relations 6

8 EDA R&T projects 172 M! "! R&T investment is only 1,24% of total defence budget 68 M! 102 M! "! R&T cooperation is only 16% in 2008, which represents 400 M!!! But the evolution for is mainly decreasing due to the financial crisis and the reduction of Defence budget!! Mid-term evolution should be to work more and better together!! No other choice for Europe than to develop mutual dependencies and strong confidence among Member States
9 Conclusions!! The EDA is working with the Member States to select key technologies where collaboration should be directed!! This process is harmonised with the Capability and EDTIB strategies and needs, all in to sustain the CSDP!! This approach allows to develop cooperation on innovative R&T projects!! Cooperation instruments put in place have proven to be efficient!! Increase synergies with the European Commission, ESA, NATO!! With a strong partnership with Industry 9
