Quick Overview of the vsan Whiteboard Slide 1-5 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 9
Based on the VMware Whiteboard Slide 1-6 The whiteboard is an essential part of many sales plays. In this module, we will present the vsan whiteboard. The vsan whiteboard is based on the VMware Whiteboard that is presented in the VTSP Foundation elearning. The VMware whiteboard divides the whiteboard space into different sections On- Premises User, Off-Premises User, On-Premises Data Center, Off-Premises Data Center, and two sections that traverse multiple categories the Digital Workspace section, and the Cross-Cloud section. Our focus will be on the On-Premises Data Center section, which is where we will begin the VMware Whiteboard. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 10
vsan Whiteboard Preview Slide 1-7 Before we get into the details of the vsan whiteboard, let s do a quick preview of what the whiteboard will consist of. Generally, you want to begin the vsan whiteboard with the basic value proposition. So here, you ll present a very basic example environment and summarize the major business values that vsan provides. After you present the value proposition with a sample environment, you then draw out your customer s On-Premises Data Center environment. Once you draw out the customer s environment on the whiteboard, you would then apply one or more vsan use cases. And finally, you would end by mentioning other VMware solutions that you could possibly cross-sell. Now let s begin presenting the vsan Whiteboard, starting with the Basic Value Proposition. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 11
Basic Value Proposition Slide 1-8 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 12
Introducing the Whiteboard Slide 1-9 Thank you for giving me this opportunity to talk to you about VMware vsan and the business values it can bring to your company. I m going to use the whiteboard for a few minutes to illustrate what I m talking about. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 13
1. Draw the Sections of the VMware Whiteboard Slide 1-10 Before we get into the details of the vsan whiteboard, let s do a quick preview of what the whiteboard will consist of. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 14
2. Draw a Traditional Environment Slide 1-11 A traditional environment has its main data center on premises. For our example, we ll show an environment with three hosts that use a traditional SAN or NAS solution for shared storage. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 15
3. Explain Challenges Slide 1-12 It doesn t take long for an enterprise with traditional storage to run into many challenges. To start with, LUN management is complicated and becomes even more so as a company grows, with more LUNS having to be created, configured, and maintained. There s a lack of flexibility as well, because all the VMs on the same LUN get the same storage services regardless of the actual application needs. This means that some applications might not get needed resources and services while other applications consume those resources without necessity. Traditional storage is also costly, because it requires a specialized IT skill set and it tends to produce inefficient siloes. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 16
4. Introduce vsan as the Solution Slide 1-13 The solution is to evolve to a hyper-converged infrastructure without risk using vsan. vsan uses local storage, which lowers the cost of storage acquisition. Servers certified for vsan called ReadyNodes contain local storage devices. The hosts with their local storage will be used to create the vsan datastore. vsan is managed using the vsphere Web Client, a tool that is already familiar to VMware administrators. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 17
5. Explain Ease of Migration Slide 1-14 It s easy to migrate VMs from SAN to vsan using tools such as vsphere Storage vmotion and vsphere Replication. vsan is also compatible with vsphere features such as vsphere HA and vsphere Storage DRS. With these migration tools already existing in your environment, you can evolve to hyper-converged infrastructure without risk and at your own pace. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 18
6. Explain Lower TCO Slide 1-15 After all of the VMs are migrated, the traditional storage solution can be decommissioned. Storage is now managed with policies instead of manual, error-prone spreadsheets. Storage policies contain rules that define items such as capacity consumption and resiliency to host failure. These policies are assigned to VMs, which provide precise management of storage services based on the requirements of each application. It is even possible to assign a storage policy to an individual virtual disk, or VMDK. This migration to hyper-converged infrastructure reduces both operating costs and acquisition costs when compared with refreshing traditional storage solutions. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 19
7. Explain Scale to Tomorrow Slide 1-16 Many IT organizations are project-based. Hardware and software are often purchased as projects call for them. But instead of going the traditional route and trying to predict, budget for, and procure 1-year and/or 3-year capacity needs, vsan hosts can be added one or a few at a time. This allows you to scale to tomorrow. With vsan, drives can be added or replaced as needed. This operation does not require downtime and the additional capacity is available in just a few minutes. This flexibility enables a just-in-time provisioning model, which is cost-efficient. Purchase only what is needed today and add more, as needed, when it is less expensive. vsan also provides that flexibility to quickly expand in the future with next-generation hardware, multi-cloud strategies, and new applications and containers. vsan easily works with next-generation solutions such as Photon and vsphere Docker Volume Service for cloud-native apps and containers. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 20
8. Wrap up Presentation of Basic Value Proposition Slide 1-17 So let s summarize the main benefits of vsan. With vsan, you can evolve your infrastructure with vsphere-embedded storage and leverage the broadest ecosystem of hardware and software solutions. Reduce TCO up to 50% with server economics, affordable flash and unified management. Scale to tomorrow with software-defined infrastructure ready for new hardware, applications, and cloud offerings. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 21
Customer s Environment Slide 1-18 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 22
1. Draw the Customer s Environment Slide 1-19 Now let s draw out the data center where you think that vsan technology would have the greatest impact. How many hosts do you have? Four? We ll draw out four here. And your four hosts are connected to a SAN solution, is that correct? Then we ll draw the SAN solution here. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 23
2. Add vsan Slide 1-20 Now let s say that we ve added vsan. vsan pools all the local storage into the vsan datastore. That allows us to decommission your expensive SAN and it brings you all the major business benefits that we ve mentioned. We ve just finished seeing the major business benefits that vsan brings. We ll now look at the specific use cases that apply to your organization. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 24
Use Cases Slide 1-21 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 25
Applying vsan Use Cases in the vsan Whiteboard Slide 1-22 These are just a few of the many use cases for vsan: Business Critical Applications Disaster Recovery Test/Development Remote Office/Branch Office Management And Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, or VDI In this whiteboard presentation, we ll be presenting all of the use cases. However, you can customize this presentation in whatever way that suits you best. For example, you can deliver just the use cases that you re customer is interested in, or you can change the order according to the interests of your customer. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 26
Use Case: Business Critical Applications Slide 1-23 Business Critical Applications are the number one use case for vsan. vsan is embedded in the hypervisor, which enables excellent performance with low overhead. This high performance is the reason why the majority of vsan customers are running their most important applications on vsan. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 27
Use Case: Disaster Recovery/High Availability (1) Slide 1-24 vsan also provides you an even higher level of availability that vsphere already does. Let s say that you decide to have another site as your secondary data center for disaster recovery. So this would be your primary site, and this would be your secondary site. To get that higher level of availability, you would use a vsan stretched cluster. A stretched cluster provides resiliency to site outages and makes it easy to migrate workloads out of harm's way with impending disasters such as rising flood waters with no downtime. With vsan, you can even get resiliency at the app level in conjunction with tools such as Oracle RAC, SQL AlwaysOn. And vsan datastores can be encrypted without the need for self-encrypting drives, bringing compliance in the healthcare, financial, and government verticals. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 28
Use Case: Disaster Recovery/High Availability (2) Slide 1-25 Now, I m going to draw another small cluster here and label it DR for Disaster Recovery. While stretched clusters offer resiliency against site failure and localized disasters, you still need the ability to recover from widespread disasters such as hurricanes and power grid failures. vsphere Replication is a feature of vsphere that enables replication on a per-vm basis across longer distances. vsphere Replication can achieve Recovery Point Objectives, or RPOs, as low as five minutes. SRM can be added to automate disaster recovery and failback. SRM is integrated with vsphere Replication and most storage types, including vsan. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 29
Use Case: Test/Development Slide 1-26 vsan is great for test and development, providing cost-effective capacity with flexibility. A VM can start out with a basic storage policy that minimizes capacity consumption for functionality testing. When moving or cloning the VM to perform user acceptance or performance testing, simply apply a new storage policy that is similar to the policy it would get in production. There s no need to migrate VMs to different storage as it moves through the testing phases. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 30
Use Case: Management Slide 1-27 For larger organizations, management clusters are appealing as resources can be isolated and there can be independent maintenance windows. So let s say we have a primary cluster with 12 hosts and some SAN LUNs. Then we have a smaller 4-node cluster that functions as our management cluster. In this management cluster, we re running VMs such as Active Directory, DNS, vrealize Automation, vcenter Server, and vrealize Operations. vsan provides great performance and availability for these workloads in the management cluster, and it s much easier to do maintenance on this vsan cluster independent of the main cluster. Without vsan, this would normally be a change control nightmare. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 31
Use Case: Remote Office/Branch Office Slide 1-28 vsan is not just for data centers anymore. If you have a remote office or a branch office, you can set up a vsan 2-node direct-connect configuration. This kind of configuration provides the resiliency of shared storage and plenty of performance while minimizing costs for branch offices, retail locations, and remote installations. The ability to directly connect the two physical nodes eliminates the need for an expensive 10Gb switch. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 32
Use Case: Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Slide 1-29 Let s talk about virtual desktop infrastructure. These desktops represent all your VDI users. vsan provides fast, efficient storage for these desktops - especially when implemented in conjunction with Horizon linked clones and instant clones. Local inmemory vsan read caching further improves performance for VDI. Shared storage in traditional SAN/NAS is commonly the most expensive component of VDI - vsan changes this. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 33
Other VMware Solutions Slide 1-30 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 34
1. Draw the Customer s Environment Slide 1-31 Now I d like to mention some additional VMware solutions that integrate with vsan and extend its capabilities even further. vrealize Operations has a management plug-in that provides more information on vsan and a holistic view of the environment. vrealize Automation can provision workloads to vsan just the same as any other storage type. vrealize Automation takes in user requests, and this intake is supported by vsan. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 35
2. Discuss Disaster Recovery as a Service Slide 1-32 If a DR site is not available, you can use Disaster Recovery as a Service with cloud partners and VMware Cloud on AWS. vsan is the primary storage type for VMware Cloud on AWS. If it is powerful enough for AWS, it is powerful enough for on-premises workloads and vice versa. Organizations can be confident that workloads will run just the same in AWS as on-premises because the underlying infrastructure technologies are the same. It is much easier and safer to migrate workloads to and from the cloud when both are using the same industry leading technologies. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 36

Storage Hub Slide 3-2 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 47
Storage Hub Slide 3-3 Storagehub.vmware.com is your online resource for all VMware storage technologies not just vsan, but also Site Recovery Manager, vsphere, and Virtual Volumes. When you go to vsan, you ll see different kinds of resources. Learn and Evaluate is where you ll find valuable references such as What s New information for the latest version, technical overviews, and vsan demos. But there are also very valuable and useful resources in the other categories as well. We recommend that you not only visit the Storage Hub website but that you also familiarize yourself with its resources, because these are resources that you ll be able to share easily with your customers. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 48
vsan Demonstrations Slide 3-4 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 49
vsan Demos at Storage Hub Slide 3-5 Actually demonstrating a product is one of the most effective tools for selling it. And VMware provides many excellent demo resources for vsan. You go to the Storage Hub website, select vsan > Learn and Evaluate > and then scroll down a bit and select VMware vsan Demonstrations. There you will see links to numerous click throughs and demo videos. You should always try to use demos rather than PowerPoint slides whenever possible to show the potential of vsan for the customer. Note to the instructor: This slide has a demo video. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 50
Using vsan Demos Slide 3-6 The demos are easy to use. All the explanation and guidance is provided at the bottom of the window, so there is little preparation that you need to do on your part. Follow the direction at the end of the text in order to continue the demo. Clicking on the right arrow to the right of the screen will take you out of this demo and into the next one. Before meeting with your customer, select which demos and features you want to focus on. Be sure to practice a demo a few times before delivering it. If you plan to show multiple demos, you might want to prep them by opening each one in a separate browser tab or window. This makes it very easy to segue from one demo to the next with minimal clicks. Learning Mode The default demo mode is called Learning Mode. In this mode, instructional text is displayed over the lower portion of the demo image, and the next item to click is highlighted in a red box. To change the default demo mode, click the icon on the lower left of the demo image. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 51
This will allow you to return to the beginning of the demo and it will give you two other demo options: Notes Down Presentation Mode Notes Down This option moves the notes to below the image in the demo and leaves the red boxes enabled. This is a good way to show the demo if you have not had the time to memorize the demo workflow. Presentation Mode - 1 This option removes the red boxes and notes. While this is the most realistic way to show the demo, it also requires that you memorize the steps and instructions. To return to Learning Mode, you would use the F2 key on your keyboard. Presentation Mode - 2 If you are unsure what the next step is while in Presentation Mode, you can use the keyboard left and right arrow keys to move backward and forward in the demo. You can also click the top left corner of the demo and the red box showing the next click location will flash briefly. Presentation Mode - 3 For an even more realistic presentation of the demo, select the arrow at the top right corner of the window to take the browser into full screen mode. You will need to refresh the window using a keyboard shortcut (Command-R on a Mac, Control-F5 on a PC) because the demo does not automatically resize with the browser window. Note that this Full Screen mode might make it more difficult to switch between tabs or windows when showing multiple click-through demos. Are you showing a combination of presentation slides and demos? Include a link to the demo directly on the presentation slide. Keep in mind that it is possible to create hyperlinks out of text and graphics in a presentation. Note to the instructor: This slide has a demo video. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 52
vsan Proof of Concept Slide 3-16 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 53
Using vsan Proof of Concept Resources Slide 3-17 Your search for vsan Proof of Concept resources begins at the Storage Hub website. Select vsan > Learn and Evaluate > and then scroll down to the Proof of Concept resources available. The Proof of Concept guides will provide you with complete information. It may be helpful to also export this guide into PDF, so that you can access all this information offline. Note to the instructor: This slide has a demo video. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 54
vsan Proof of Concept Tips Slide 3-18 Here are some Proof of Concept tips that are found in the Proof of Concept guides: Follow the vsphere Compatibility Guide precisely. Quite a number of people get into trouble because they don t follow the specific guidelines in the Compatibility Guide. Follow all the items in the vsan Proof of Concept checklist prior to starting the POC. Also reference the vsan Sizing and Design Guide, which can be found on the Storage Hub website under vsan > Plan and Design. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 55
vsan Assessment Tool Slide 3-19 VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 56

In the near future, the data from the vsan Assessment will be able to automatically populate the Sizing Tool. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 61
vsan Sizing Tool: Sizing Options Slide 3-25 The vsan Sizing Tool provides you with two options: The Simple Sizer provides pre-filled default settings that you can then modify, and the Advanced Sizer provides more customization options but no default settings are provided. As of this writing, the Sizing Tool provides data for All Flash environments only. In the near future, it will also provide data for hybrid storage environments. VMware vsan and HCI: Validate and Prove Page 62
vsan Sizing Tool: Simple Sizer Demo Slide 3-26 For demonstration purposes, we will select the Simple Sizer. Then we need to choose the workload type. For this example, we will choose VDI. We will then proceed to fill in the rest of the information. Some of the data will already be pre-filled with default settings. We are changing the storage per VM to 20 Gigabytes for this particular customer. Here, we click Customize just to show you the default settings that are already being used here. If you want to change any of these, you can certainly do so, and the calculator will adjust accordingly. After clicking Next, we see the full recommendations for vsan, including which Server Pack and which vsan Ready Node to obtain. Note to the instructor: This slide has a demo video.
