ENERGY EFFICIENT Free Cooling instead of compressor In data centres with a thermal load of approx. 800 kilowatts or more, cooling the circulating air with water is a viable option. The cooling circuit is fed by an external chiller. Liquid cooling systems supplemented by economical Free Cooling are particularly energy efficient. Direct Free Cooling Thanks to our many years of experience with precision airconditioning solutions, we have succeeded in optimising all components for Direct Free Cooling, ensuring compliance with specified data centre temperature tolerances as per ASHRAE TC With Direct Free Cooling, filtered ambient air below 18 C is used to keep the data centre cool. This brings huge potential savings. In view of rising energy prices, the investment in a STULZ Precision Air Conditioning System(PACS) with energy-saving technology pays for itself in just a few years. 03 Low consumption over large areas Large data centres are cooled by the low-consumption STULZ CyberAir airconditioning system with DFC. The DFC (=Dynamic Free Cooling) automatic airconditioning system controls the output of the cooling fans in the blink of an eye, and switches to economical Free Cooling when weather conditions cool down. In this operating mode, the refrigerant in the system is cooled further with ambient air. Energyintensive compressor cooling (DX) is only switched on when absolutely necessary. 7

Many data center managers end up trying to use comfort cooling solutions to satisfy their environmental control needs, as these systems can mean simplified and economical deployment up front. However, because they are not designed to meet the unique needs of critical IT equipment, reliance on comfort cooling systems can result in an increased risk for premature system failures as well as grossly inflated operating costs. In contrast, precision cooling systems are designed specifically to meet the needs of dense electrical heat loads. The decision to accept the increased risk of comfort cooling systems is usually based on the lower initial costs. However, precision cooling systems actually represent the most costeffective solutions when total cost of ownership is evaluated. Finally, data centers that incorporate high density cooling design into their expansion or renovation plans will benefit from scalable IT capacity and reduce the risk of IT downtime. 17 THE BIG MISTAKE MOST DATA CENTER MANAGERS MAKE

18 The PROBLEM with Comfort Units for Data Centers!!! Here are a few reasons why Precision Air Conditioning units are by far the most suitable as far as IT infrastructure cooling is concerned. i. Cost: When a decision is made to accept the increased risk of using comfort cooling systems for sensitive electronics, it is usually based on higher initial costs of the precision cooling system. But, because precision cooling systems are designed and sized for the high sensible cooling requirements and year-round operation of the data center, they are less expensive to operate over their life than comfort systems. Consequently, when initial costs and operating costs are both taken into account, precision cooling systems actually represent the most cost-effective solution to cooling sensitive electronics. ii. Precise Humidity Control: The natural air is filled with some amount of moist to make it appropriate for humans and conversely inappropriate for IT systems. However, since comfort air conditioning units are made specifically for human use, their inability to precisely control and automatically regulate the temperature and relative humidity for the racks in the server room, unlike Precision Units, does not make it a better option for IT systems. Too much non-regulated humidity in the server room can lead to condensation and corrosion, while too little can cause static charges, data loss and damage to hardware and a system to precisely control it is critical. Hence the need for a Precision Air Conditioning System (PACS). iii. Precision cooling systems are designed specifically to meet the needs of dense electronic loads, which generate a dryer heat than typical comfort-cooling environments and require year-round, 24-hour cooling. Electronics are also more sensitive to variations in humidity and air quality than typical comfort-cooling environments. iv. Precision Air Conditioning Systems are Designed for 24 x 7, 365 days continuous operation which is quite different than conventional comfort systems. Comfort Air Conditioning Units have been designed to operate within a limited time frame and not to run continuously for 24hrs/day. Constant operation of the comfort ACs without rest inevitably leads to a gross reduction in operational efficiency and Unit s lifespan. 18
