2 Smart Grid Definition A smart grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses analog or digital information and communications technology to gather and act on information, such as information about the behaviors of suppliers and consumers, in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity Roll-out of smart grid technology also implies a fundamental re-engineering of the electricity services industry, although typical usage of the term is focused on the technical infrastructure.

9 Smart Grid Implications for IEEMA Electric utilities now find themselves making three classes of transformations: Improvement of infrastructure substation and distribution automation Automated Metering Infrastructure Addition of the digital layer on physical infrastructure layer that itself is shaky Business process transformation, necessary to capitalize on the investments in smart technology Timeline, resources, model

10 Aspirational Goals Higher Grid Efficiency, Reliability and Resilience Create negawatts as a fifth fuel and monetize the potential of energy efficiency and demand response Reduced CO2 emissions: Development and Utilisation of Distributed Energy Resources and Renewable Energy Job Creation and Marketplace Innovation

11 Division Focus Areas ISGD will form three working groups to achieve its objectives 1. Policy and Regulation - The focus of this working group will be to work closely with central government organizations responsible for setting up the policies in the smart grid arena 2. Technology - The focus of this working will be to discuss and recommend the kind of infrastructure & equipment, used and adopted to take full advantage of the technology available globally

12 Division Focus Areas 3. Operation and Implementation- The focus of this working group will be to provide active guidance on the roll out of the smart grid programs be it in the form of pilots or sate or utility specific roadmaps or implementation frameworks using PPP models. This team will also conduct analysis to look at the budgets and financing structures that are being set asides to ensure that there is parity between ambition and resources.
