A Summary of the Types of Graphs A graph is a representation of a relationship between variables. A graph usually has two called the -axis (horizontal) and -axis (vertical). The axes are labeled with different names, for example Price and Quantity. The place where the two axes intersect is called the. The origin is also identified as the point ( ). Bar Graph Bar graphs are used to two or more things. These comparisons are made with some. y axis Even gaps between bars Bars drawn with a ruler Labels x axis Comparative bar graphs (also known as bar graphs) are used when comparing two or more things with two sets of. These graphs would require a to distinguish the different sets of data.
Pictograph Pictographs are used to two or more similar things using or symbols. They are similar to bar graphs however the comparisons have less but have more effect. City Population Growth Symbols can be ¼, ½, or ¾ drawn to represent fractional amounts of the whole symbol Each symbol represents 5 million Legend tells what each symbol represents. Broken Line Graph A broken line graph shows how thing can over time. A broken line graph has a range of data on axes. Label Range of data on both axes. y axis Earnings for the month Origin $8 $7 $6 $5 $4 $3 $2 $1 Simon s Monthly Babysitting Earnings Jan. Feb. Mar. Apr. May. Jun. Month a) What is the total amount Simon ear Label Points are placed on the graph first. Lines are drawn with a ruler connecting the points. x axis
Climate Graph A climate graph combines a bar graph and a broken line graph to show both average monthly temperatures and average monthly precipitation amounts for a place. We use climate graphs to show and analyze climate data. The average monthly temperature is shown by the line graph. The average monthly precipitation is shown by the bar graph. Circle Graph A circle graph (also known as a graph) shows how one thing is. It shows the of the whole. A circle graph usually converts its data into. The entire circle represents %. There is usually a explaining the different parts of the circle. Sometimes the labels are located the circle graph. Favourite Kinds of Pie Legend 17% 17% 33% 33% apple (8) cherry (8) lemon (4) other (4)
Scatter Graph A scatter graph (also known as a scatter ) is a graph of plotted points that show the (or of relationship) between two sets of data. The points are connected. Once the points have been plotted, an examination of how the points on the graph (called a line of best fit ) will determine if there is a relationship between the two sets of data. 1 Life Expectancy vs Literacy Rate of a Few Countries Life Literacy Rate (%) Line of Best Fit Two sets of data Life Expectancy (Years)
Review of the Types of Graphs bar graph broken line graph pictograph comparative bar graph climate graph scatter graph circle graph 1. This is a graph of plotted points (not connected) that show the relationship, or lack of relationship between two sets of data: 2. This compares two or more similar things in good detail: 3. This graph shows how one thing can change over time: 4. This graph uses pictures or symbols: 5. This graph shows how one thing is divided: 6. This graph combines a bar graph with a broken line graph: 7. This graph compares two or more similar things with two sets of data: 8. This graph usually requires a legend: 9. This graph has a range of data on both axes: 1. This graph is sometimes known as a pie graph: 11. This graph is used to analyze climate data: 12. This graph compares two or more things with less accuracy, but with more visual effect: 13. This graph has pairs of bars with no gaps in between: 15. This graph has bars with gaps in between: 16. This graph usually converts its data into percents:
