3 PREFACE Welcome to dba/m Database Manager, a client-server product designed to manage HP NonStop SQL/MP databases. This manual provides procedures for using dba/m Database Manager to manage database operations as well as database objects such as catalogs, tables, views, indexes, partitions, and programs. How This Manual Is Organized The dba/m Database Manager User s Guide contains procedures for using dba/m Database Manager, and managing database operations and database objects. Part no. of this manula is For information on tasks such as installing, upgrading, or starting and stopping dba/m Database Manager on the server, refer to the dba/m Database Manager Installation & Operations Manual. Use on-line Help for information on NonStop SQL/MP commands. For more detailed information on NonStop SQL/MP concepts, commands, and operations, refer to the documents published by HP Computer Corporation listed in the Reference section in this preface. This manual is organized as follows: Part I, Using dba/m Database Manager. The chapters in Part I explain how to invoke dba/m Database Manager and manage dba/m Database Manager users. It also describes how to use dba/m Database Manager features such as the Object Tree, Custom Tree and session profiles. Part II, Managing Database Operations. The chapters in Part II explain how to use dba/m Database Manager to perform database management tasks such as monitoring disk space usage, analyzing and tuning query performance, and creating and scheduling batch jobs. Part III, Managing SQL Objects. The chapters in Part III provide procedures for managing NonStop SQL/MP objects: catalogs, tables, views, indexes, partitions, and programs. 4 Conventions and Definitions Used in This Manual Most dba/m Database Manager tasks are executed by completing the fields in a full-screen window. Window names are capitalized, for example, the Create Table window. A pane is the portion of a widow that contains related fields. The fields in a pane are often grouped inside a box and a name. Pane names are capitalized, for example, the Security pane. Fields in a window or pane are identified by names or by icons. Field names are capitalized, for example, the Column Name field. dba/m Database Manager uses the following field types: Field, into which you type a value. Check-box, a yes/no field. A yes value is indicated by a checkmark. A no value is indicated by a blank box. Option buttons, a set of related yes/no fields. One field can be set to yes; all of the other related fields are automatically set to no. Drop-down list, which contains a list of options. Tabular, a collection of related fields arranged in a table of rows and columns. The name of a column is used to refer to the name of the field. A row consists of a row header and column values. You select a row in a tabular field by clicking on one of the column values; the row is highlighted. The selected row can be used in three scenarios: If... If the next operation will be performed only on the selected row The next operation will be performed on a set of rows The next operation is a delete-rows operation Then... The row header is blank. A checkmark is displayed in the row headers of the selected rows. An x is displayed in the row headers of the selected rows. Click on buttons to perform operations on data in a window. Names of buttons are capitalized, for example, the Execute button. dba/m Database Manager V7.1 User's Guide

21 CHAPTER 1. INVOKING dba/m Database Manager To invoke dba/m Database Manager, double-click on the dba/m Database Manager icon in the DBAM program group. To perform any dba/m Database Manager functions, you must establish a session with the HP Nonstop SQL/MP database. Logging On When you invoke dba/m Database Manager, the Logon window is displayed, as shown in Figure 1-1. To establish a session Figure 1-1. Logon Window. dba/m Database Manager V7.1 User's Guide

22 1. In the User ID field, enter your Guardian user ID in the format <usergroup>.<username>. 2. In the Password field, enter your password. Asterisks are displayed as you type, instead of the actual password. 3. Choose a refresh mode by clicking on one of the following buttons: Refresh: dba/m Database Manager retrieves SQL-object information stored on the Tandem node. The refresh operation might take a long time, based on the number of objects on the node. NoRefresh: dba/m Database Manager retrieves SQL-object information from files stored on the workstation. When you log on for the first time, SQL-object information is retrieved from the node regardless of which button you choose. 4. Click OK to establish a dba/m Database Manager session. If you typed your user ID or password incorrectly, a message appears indicating that you entered an invalid username or password. Click OK, then repeat steps 1 through 3 to establish a dba/m Database Manager session. After validating your name and password, dba/m Database Manager loads all information about the SQL objects in your environment. The progress of the loading is displayed, as shown in Figure 1-2. This window provides an inventory of all SQL objects in your environment. The time required to load the object information depends on the number of objects stored on the node. When the loading is complete, you can use dba/m s database-management tools. 1-2 Invoking dba/m Database Manager

75 CHAPTER 7. ANALYZING AND TUNING QUERY PERFORMANCE Query performance depends on two major factors: the structure of the queries, and the statistics of the tables referred to in the queries. Using dba/m Database Manager, you can correlate the query to the statistics of tables that are stored in NonStop SQL catalogs. Using dba/m Database Manager, you also can study the impact of the structure of the query using the methods identified by NonStop SQL s explain function to retrieve data. dba/m Database Manager provides an easy-to-use facility to fine-tune queries by iteratively modifying queries and analyzing the performance of the modified queries using the explain functions. With the appropriate permission, you can use dba/m Database Manager to simulate production statistics in a test or development environment. Using this facility, you can predict performance in a production environment. You can use dba/m Database Manager to analyze queries embedded in programs or ad hoc queries. Analyzing Queries in Programs Use the Program Query Performance Analysis window to display the Explain output for all of the queries in a program. Each time you compile a program within dba/m Database Manager, a new version of the Explain output is created. You can display the Explain output for any version of a program. You must compile programs under dba/m Database Manager control in order to analyze queries in a program. Refer to Chapter 17, Managing Programs, for instructions on compiling programs using dba/m Database Manager. To display the Program Query Performance analysis window, click on the QueryAnalysis button in the Main Window, then click on Program. To simulate production statistics, your copy of dba/m Database Manager must be licensed to update table statistics. Check with the HP NonStop System administrator to determine if you have the appropriate license. Warning: Genus Software strongly recommends that you perform simulations in a user transaction mode, so that you can roll back the changes to the statistics. Otherwise, statistics data in the catalogs is permanently changed. To simulate production statistics, refer to Simulating Production Statistics earlier in this chapter. dba/m Database Manager V7.1 User's Guide
