The Jülich WCS interface for emissions, model products, and model evaluation Martin G. Schultz, M. Decker, S. Lührs, S. Schröder, O. Stein, S. Waychal IEK-8, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany
PART1: AIR QUALITY DATA AND THE CONCEPT OF INTEROPERABILITY
Air quality data comes in many different facets
and in many different formats. WDCGG, Japan EMEP, NILU CASTNET, US EEA Airbase netcdf HDF
You access data in several ways scp and you use different tools to work with the data. python FORTRAN MatLab C++
And you are sure to miss something! Because you don t know about some datasets Because you don t know how to access a dataset Because you cannot access a dataset Because you cannot read the data format Because you don t find the metadata Because you don t understand the metadata Because you don t know the history of the dataset
That s why you need interoperability! But what does it mean?
The classic way how scientists work??! Question/Idea Access data from various sources Try to read, analyze and visualize data friend to help Write a paper draft
The classic way how scientists work (2) Ask for coauthors opinion Learn about more data that you should have used? Access data from various sources Try to read, analyze and visualize data
The interoperable way? Question/Idea Use catalogue service to find data Use interoperable web interface(s) to access, visualize, download data Write a paper draft
The interoperable way (2) Communicate with colleagues about the science, not about technical questions Be first to publish
The interoperability mantra FIND ACCESS USE LINK without having to program anything as a user
PART2: THE JÜLICH WCS SERVER AND WEB INTERFACE
The Jülich WCS server and web interface WCS: web coverage service (an Open Geospatial Consortium standard) Users Local data bases WCS server Web Interface MACC HTAP UBA-D External data bases Work space Data Plots Information near realtime data (24 h) ECCAD DataFed
The Jülich WCS server and web interface from the user perspective Users Web Interface Data Plots Information Note: We don t have a sophisticated interface to search for data yet Use or others to FIND data!
A use case: Overlay emissions from ECCAD with MACC forecast data Select data catalogue
Select dataset Choose region, time interval, and variables Load data into workspace
From workspace: download or plot data
Save image Plot options

Overlay with monthly mean simulated PAN concentrations from MACC forecast (January 2011) Individual layers (like Photoshop)
Overlay with monthly mean simulated NO 2 concentrations from MACC forecast (January 2011)
Example for time series plot with UBA station data EU threshold (8 hours)
Plot types and analysis tools Maps (implemented) Vertical cross sections (in preparation) Time series (limited implementation) Vertical profiles (planned) Interpolation (tools developed but need to be integrated) Arithmetic operations (planned) Statistics (planned) Lots of plans to improve look and feel and functionality!
PART3: THE NEED FOR METADATA HARMONISATION (in lieu of Conclusions)
How do we find out about existing services? from GEOSS registry ("Description" = "Air Quality") from GEOSS registry ("Description" = "Atmospheric Composition")
from GEOSS registry (Advanced search options) Select "Ambient ozone" from "Atmospheric Chemistry" (not listed under "Air Quality"!): from GEOSS registry ("non GEO organisation oir member state") Lessons: 1. Community should agree on terminology and encourage services to register 2. GEOSS should actively support service registration and improve "metadata facets"
Another attempt to locate air quality services (keyword "air quality"): Interestingly, a search for "Luftqualität" returns 5645 results keyed on "pollution" Lessons: 1. Either you get too little or (far) too much 2. Not always easy to find what you want (even if you know about an existing service)
and finally Google "Air quality services": 179,000,000 results in 0.19 seconds "Interoperable air quality services": 1,310,000 results in 0.41 seconds "Interoperable air quality data services": 949,000 results "Interoperable air quality data service portal": 2,370,000 in 0.38 seconds "Operational +air +quality +data +service": 39 results in 0.35 seconds "Interoperable +air +quality +data +services": 4 results
The importance of metadata Need metadata to FIND data and to DESCRIBE data Metadata are key to interoperability (standardisation!) User requirements (need community consensus): Search facets (by originator, type, time period, region, compound, sector, ) Description (author, version, method, ) Uncertainty information Dataset traceability (incl. processing information) Categorisation ( granularity )
AQ controlled vocabulary: INSPIRE / EIONET Web link: netcdf-cf standard_names also provide a set of controlled vocabulary There may be a need for controlled grammar as well
GEO AQ CoP Workshop "Metadata for Air Quality and Atmospheric Composition" Dublin, 5-7 September 2012 Registration open soon Information at Air_Quality_Metadata_Workshop_Dublin_2012
