CHAPTER 1 Overview Teradata Aggregate Designer provides a user-friendly GUI for designing, recommending, and publishing AJIs on Teradata Database in support of ROLAP implementations. An AJI is an aggregate result set saved as an object in the database. Transparent to end-users and BI administrators, AJIs allow the Teradata Database system to get requested data from an index instead of accessing and joining underlying base tables. An AJI defined to fully satisfy a query eliminates the need to access multiple base tables, perform joins and aggregates, or redistribute the rows of very large tables each time the query is run. Browse through these topics to learn more: What is Teradata Aggregate Designer? Minimum and Recommended System Requirements What is Teradata Aggregate Designer? Teradata Aggregate Designer performs the following activities: 1 Consumes the multidimensional data definition from a BI OLAP engine and connects to Teradata Database. 2 Validates the cube schema definitions supported by Teradata Aggregate Designer. 3 Validate correlated physical model in Teradata Database for creation of AJIs. If the physical model is not suitable for AJI creation, the tool will provide specific recommendations and instructions on how to correct the problem. 4 Design AJIs using one or both of the following methods: Access the Teradata Aggregate Designer Advisor, which recommends aggregate structure designs. Create and populate custom aggregate structures. Teradata Aggregate Designer also edits, saves, and executes AJI definitions and allows users to specify additional optimization techniques such as the use of PIs and PPIs. Use the Calculate Cost button to graph one or more AJIs in the Space Cost Chart. 5 Construct DDL (Create AJI) to implement the AJIs. 6 Validates the DDL statement and executes it against Teradata Database to create the AJI. 7 Provides AJI Explorer, which enables the following: Browsing, viewing, and deleting AJIs in the target Teradata Database system Teradata Aggregate Designer User Guide 13

To detect primary key and/or foreign key data conflicts From the Tools menu, click Pk/Fk Hard Data Check. This checks for data conflict in the columns specified as Primary Key and Foreign Keys in the schema. Teradata Aggregate Designer User Guide 37
Chapter 4: Using Teradata Aggregate Designer Define and Refine the AJI Define and Refine the AJI From the Teradata Aggregate Designer window manually create recommendations to optimize the cube or use the Teradata Aggregate Designer Advisor to create a list of recommendations to optimize the cube. Aggregate Join Index Advisor Use the Teradata Aggregate Designer Advisor to create a list of recommendations to optimize cubes. Teradata Aggregate Designer uses the schema and the data in the database to create AJI definitions. The Teradata Aggregate Designer Advisor recommends two AJIs, the Base AJI and the Broad AJI. The Base AJI contains all foreign keys that exist in the fact table. This is regardless of whether it is a star or snowflake schema because the Base AJI does not join any tables. It is a single table AJI on the transaction or fact table. The Broad AJI is created for the next to last OLAP level (one level above the lowest level). In the snowflake model, the foreign key from the dimension list is selected in the AJI for the current level. Expert Mode To display recommended aggregate From the Teradata toolbar, click Advisor. The Advisor runs for a few seconds before it displays an initial list of recommended Base and Broad AJIs in the Aggregate Join Index Pane of the Teradata Aggregate Designer window. Note: Recommendations created by the Teradata Aggregate Designer Advisor appear in the Aggregate Join Index pane as an Advisor type. To create recommendations manually 1 In the Aggregate Join Index Pane of the Teradata Aggregate Designer window, click Add to add a row to the pane. Note: By default, the added row is highlighted and selected. If more than one row is added, the last row added is highlighted. 2 In the Aggregation Levels tab of the Edit Aggregate Definition Pane, use the arrows to change the hierarchy levels for the row. Click Apply to apply the change. The information for the row in the Aggregate Join Index pane reflects the changes. 38 Teradata Aggregate Designer User Guide
Chapter 4: Using Teradata Aggregate Designer Export Aggregates Note: Recommendations created manually appear in the Aggregate Join Index pane as a Custom type. Customize a recommendation To customize a recommendation 1 In the Aggregate Join Index Pane of the Teradata Aggregate Designer window, highlight the row to customize. 2 In the Aggregation Levels tab of the Edit Aggregate Definition Pane, use the arrows to change the hierarchy levels for the row. 3 Click Reset to restore the previous settings. 4 Click Apply to apply the changes. The information for the row in the Aggregate Join Index pane reflects the change. Note: Customized recommendations display as Custom types in the Aggregate Join Index pane. Export Aggregates Use the Export and Publish option of Teradata Aggregate Designer to: Preview the AJI outputs for the selected recommendations Export the AJI output to a local file Publish (build) the AJIs To preview AJI output for recommendations 1 In the Aggregate Join Index pane of the Teradata Aggregate Designer window select the row or rows to preview. 2 Click Export from the window toolbar. The Export and Publish dialog box appears. 3 Click Preview. The Preview dialog box appears. You can edit statements in the Preview dialog box. For example, unmask COLLECT STATISTICS and COMMENT ON statements, or edit the CREATE statement to enable saving, copying or executing directly against the connected Teradata Database system. Do one of the following: Click Save to save the output to a file. Click Copy to Clipboard to copy the file to the clipboard. Click Execute to execute all SQL statements in the dialog box. Teradata Aggregate Designer User Guide 39
Chapter 4: Using Teradata Aggregate Designer Save Design Work Note: If no primary index has been defined for the selected AJI, a warning dialog box displays. If a primary index is not specified, the Teradata Database selects the first column by default. 4 Click Close to exit the Preview dialog box. 5 Click Close to exit the Export and Publish dialog box. To export AJI output to a local file 1 In the Aggregate Join Index pane of the Teradata Aggregate Designer window select the row or rows to preview. 2 Click Export from the window toolbar. The Export and Publish dialog box appears. 3 Click Export and save the file. 4 Click Close to exit the Export and Publish dialog box. To publish (build) the AJI 1 In the Aggregate Join Index pane of the Teradata Aggregate Designer window select the row or rows to preview. 2 Click Export from the window toolbar. The Export and Publish dialog box appears. 3 Click Execute. Save Design Work Teradata Aggregate Designer allows all aggregate-related data (custom- or advisor-created) in the workspace to be saved at any time. Saving ensures that all of the data in the workspace is retained. Saving the design creates an XML file that can later be opened to continue refining the cube. To save Do one of the following: Click File>Save Click File>Save As 40 Teradata Aggregate Designer User Guide
Glossary A ad hoc query A query of which the system has no prior knowledge. An ad hoc query differs from a standard report, which looks for specific information in a specific format on a scheduled basis. aggregate cube. Summary data that provides definitions for aggregate tables that help optimize a aggregation The process of merging multiple data values into one value. For example, sales data collected daily can then be aggregated to the week level, the week data could be aggregated to the month level, and so on. The data can then be referred to as aggregate data. Aggregation and summarization are synonyms, as are aggregate data and summary data. AJI Aggregate Join Index. Combines one or more commonly-used columns of the base tables with the results from one or more aggregation expressions pre-computed from one or more columns of the tables. This is used to improve query performance of summarized data. alias A name or label used as an alternative means of referring to someone or something. attribute A characteristic of a dimension member in a logical data model, representing a set of dimension members. It is associated with a database column. For example, the Time dimension might have a Year attribute which represents the set of years in a database column. B base table A base table can be any table that acts as an origin of detailed data. In OLAP, the fact table is often considered to be the base table in a star schema. C calculated member other members. A member of a dimension whose value is calculated from the values of children Members of a dimension that are subordinate to a parent member. Typically, children would be used in a calculation that created a consolidated total for the parent. Children can also have children, or levels that are subordinate to themselves. Children can have more than one parent. client An OLAP client usually handles most of the presentation work, and only some of the processing. The OLAP server handles the rest of the processing. cube A named collection of measures and dimensions. Measures and dimensions are derived from a fact table, which identifies the columns from which the measures are calculated and contain references to the tables which hold the dimensions. Teradata Aggregate Designer User Guide 41
Glossary D data model An abstract model that describes how data is represented or structured, and how data elements relate to each other. A multidimensional data model in OLAP consists of cubes, measures, dimensions, hierarchies, levels, and attributes. data repository A logical division of data where multiple databases reside; the databases apply to specific applications (such as accounting programs). A data repository can also represent a physical division of data. data source The source of computer data or a site where data is stored and accessed. data type A definition of a set of data that gives the range of values, such as date, number, string, and floating point. Database Query Log (DBQL) Provides detailed information about queries running on a Teradata system. DBQL data enables identifying and troubleshooting problem queries. dimension A logical grouping of attributes. A dimension acts as an efficient and intuitive way of organizing data for retrieval and analysis. dimension table A database table that contains attribute-associated data and is created as a companion table to a fact table. drill down/up To view data in different levels of detail. Specifically, a user can drill up to get more generalized data or down for more detailed data. The level to which a user can drill depends on the granularity of the data. E elements The actual data values that appear in a dimension table associated with an attribute. January and September would be elements of the Month attribute in the Time dimension. Also referred to as an attribute element. F facts Variables or measures, normally stored as numeric fields, which are the focus of the decision support investigation. Facts would be inventory levels, sales amounts, commissions, and so on. fact table A fact table acts as the base table for a star schema and, when normalized, is surrounded by dimension tables containing attribute data. The fact table contains measure or fact data. See also base table. formula A formula calculates or sets guidelines for manipulating data within a multidimensional database, and defines enterprise relationships. Users can use a formula to personalize data for their specific needs. 42 Teradata Aggregate Designer User Guide
