3 Preface Purpose The Teradata Business Intelligence Optimizer (Teradata BIO) suite of products allows users to use the Teradata Database as a ROLAP platform for multidimensional analytics. This Teradata Business Intelligence Optimizer Release Definition provides an overview of Teradata BIO and its products: Teradata Aggregate Designer, which recommends Aggregate Join Indexes (AJIs) and allows users to design and customize AJIs. Teradata Schema Workbench, which allows OLAP DBAs to specify and manage multidimensional models for BI client applications. Teradata OLAP Connector, which provides MDX query language services and supports the ODBO interface used in BI clients for working with OLAP cubes. The document contains important information received late in the release and not included in other documentation associated with this release. 9 CHAPTER 1 Release Information This chapter provides an overview of the Teradata BIO suite and its components. The Teradata BIO suite consists of three components: Teradata Aggregate Designer Teradata Schema Workbench Teradata OLAP Connector Each of these components can work together or independently to create, optimize, and accelerate the use of Teradata for Business Intelligence. Teradata BIO is optimized for use with Teradata data sources to accelerate the use of ROLAP. The Teradata Aggregate Designer component automatically creates the appropriate, efficient Data Definition Language (DDL) statements for creating an AJI. Because AJIs are populated and maintained automatically by Teradata Database, Data Manipulation Language (DML) statements are not created when working with Teradata targets. Use the Teradata Schema Workbench component to define OLAP metadata, such as cubes, dimensions, hierarchies, measures, and calculations. 10 Chapter 1: Release Information Workflow Workbench enables defining role-based security for these objects to control access when running multidimensional queries. The Teradata OLAP Connector component is a client-side component that interprets MDX query language, sends SQL to the Teradata Database, and enables BI client applications to slice and dice OLAP cube data. Workflow The typical Teradata Business Intelligence Optimizer workflow consists of the following steps: 1 Define the schema for the targeted OLAP solution. 2 Use Teradata Schema Workbench to build the schema definition. Use Teradata Schema Workbench to create a new schema, or translate an existing non-supported 3rd Party schema if a transformation tool is unavailable. 3 Export the schema definition into an XML file. 4 Teradata Aggregate Designer reads the schema definition files and uses it to qualify the usage of AJIs. It also reads native Microsoft SSAS schema definition files. 5 Teradata Aggregate Designer builds and deploys the AJIs. 6 Teradata OLAP Connector enables Microsoft Excel or other MDX-based tools to connect directly to Teradata Database. Teradata OLAP Connector uses the schema definition defined by Teradata Schema Workbench for MDX to SQL optimization. 11 Chapter 1: Release Information Product Version Numbers Product Version Numbers Teradata Aggregate Designer Teradata OLAP Connector Teradata Schema Workbench Supported Operating Systems Teradata Aggregate Designer, Teradata Schema Workbench, and Teradata OLAP Connector are supported on the following versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Windows 7 Windows Vista SP1 Windows Server 2008 Standard Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2 Windows XP SP3 Supported and Recommended Versions of Java Teradata Aggregate Designer and Teradata Schema Workbench require Java Standard Edition (SE) version 5 or later; however, it is recommended to install the latest update of Java JRE version 6. Certain versions of Java do not support all Windows operating systems; for example, JRE 5 does not support Windows 7. The JRE 6 update 23 supports each Windows platform listed in Supported Operating Systems. Note: If the version of JRE 6 on your system is update 20 or 21, upgrade to the latest version. Supported Versions of Teradata Database Teradata Business Intelligence Optimizer supports Teradata Database 12.0, 13.0, and Specifically, Teradata Aggregate Designer supports Teradata Database versions or later, or later, and or later. Installing Teradata Aggregate Designer The Teradata Aggregate Designer requires Java SE runtime version 5 or later, but version 6 is recommended for best results. For more information, see Supported and Recommended Versions of Java on page 11. Additionally, Teradata Aggregate Designer supports JDBC Driver version or later. To install Teradata Aggregate Designer 1 Insert the Teradata Aggregate Designer install CD (BCD ). If the install does not automatically run, click setup.exe to start the installation. The InstallShield Wizard window appears. 2 Click Next. 3 Select the I accept the terms of the license agreement option to accept the license agreement, and click Next. 4 Click Next to accept the default installation directory: C:\Program Files\Teradata\Client\13.10\Teradata Aggregate Designer\ Note: To change the destination path, click Change, browse to a different location in your Windows file system, and click OK. 5 Click Typical. Note: For a custom install, click Custom. For instructions, see Customizing Install Settings on page In the Ready to Install the Program window, click Install. To prevent the Workbench Toolbox from installing (Custom install) 1 On the Custom Setup dialog box of the Teradata Schema Workbench InstallShield Wizard, click the Workbench Toolbox drop-down arrow to select the appropriate option from the Workbench Toolbox drop-down menu. 2 Click Next if no other changes are necessary. 3 In the Ready to Install the Program window, click Install. Installing Teradata OLAP Connector Before installing Teradata OLAP Connector, it is important to know the bitness of the Microsoft Office Excel version installed and the Windows operating system. Use the following guidelines to determine which bit version of Teradata OLAP Connector to install: On 32-bit Windows systems, install the 32-bit version of Teradata OLAP Connector. On a 64-bit Windows system with a 32-bit version of Excel, install the 32-bit version of Teradata OLAP Connector. On a 64-bit Windows system with a 64-bit version of Excel, install the 64-bit version of Teradata OLAP Connector. The 64-bit install is named Teradata OLAP Connector nt-x8664. Teradata OLAP Connector requires installation of Teradata OLAP Connector and later, and later, or and later with supporting packages (Teradata GSS, ICU). To install Teradata OLAP Connector 1 Insert the Teradata OLAP Connector install CD (BCD ). The install CD package is distributed as two separate CDs: Volume 1 contains the 32-bit install package (Teradata OLAP Connector). Volume 2 contains the 64-bit install package (Teradata OLAP Connector nt-x8664). Note: If the install does not automatically run, click setup.exe to start the installation. Customizing Install Settings When installing a Teradata BIO product, click Custom to apply customized settings for the installation. The following instructions describe how to add licenses and sources in the Custom Setup window of the InstallShield Wizard. To install licences and sources 1 Click the Licences drop-down arrow to select the appropriate option from the Licenses drop-down menu. 2 Click the Sources drop-down arrow to select the appropriate source code. 3 Click Next. 4 In the Ready to Install the Program window, click Install. 5 Click Finish when the installation is complete.
