You might want to run in split domain mode so that you can upgrade Metadata Manager without upgrading PowerCenter. You can use split domain mode to take advantage of new features, bug fixes, and connectivity updates in later versions of Metadata Manager, without upgrading your PowerCenter environment. In split domain mode, PowerCenter and Metadata Manager can run on different versions or hotfixes. Split domain mode is supported when PowerCenter runs on an earlier version and Metadata Manager runs on a later version. For example, use split domain mode to run PowerCenter on version and Metadata Manager on version You 2
can use split domain mode for any combination of supported PowerCenter and Metadata Manager versions listed in the Product Availability Matrix: PCAE Metadata Manager XConnect Support. For more information about product requirements and supported platforms, see the Product Availability Matrix on Informatica Network: Terminology and Concepts PowerCenter Advanced Edition can include the following products based on your license and product version: PowerCenter A data integration platform used to design and run data integration processes. Metadata Manager A packaged application that provides insight into a consolidated view of metadata sourced from PowerCenter and other tools. Metadata Manager uses PowerCenter to load resources, extract metadata from the source tools (including PowerCenter), and populate the Metadata Manager repository. The Metadata Manager repository contains the consolidated view of the metadata. All PowerCenter objects for the Metadata Manager resource loads are stored in a single PowerCenter repository folder named Metadata Load. Data Analyzer A framework for performing business analytics on corporate data. You can extract, filter, format, and analyze corporate information from data stored in a data warehouse, operational data store, or other data storage models. Business Glossary A framework for managing and publishing online glossaries that describe the meaning and business requirements of terminology. In Informatica Analyst, data stewards can manage the definition and description of concepts, their categorization, and relationships with other concepts. In Business Glossary Desktop, you can look up the meaning of terminology found in business documents such as reports, s and spreadsheets. You can load Business Glossary content into Metadata Manager and link the content with other objects in the catalog to describe the business purpose of the different objects. The products run as application services in an Informatica domain. Each product requires the following application services: PowerCenter requires a PowerCenter Integration Service and a PowerCenter Repository Service. Metadata Manager requires a Metadata Manager Service, a PowerCenter Integration Service, and a PowerCenter Repository Service. Data Analyzer requires a Reporting Service and either a PowerCenter Repository Service or Metadata Manager Service, based on whether you use the PowerCenter or Metadata Manager repository as the Data Analyzer data source. Business Glossary requires an Analyst Service and a Model Repository Service. For more information about application services, see the Informatica Application Service Guide. 3
Single Domain Mode In many configurations, PowerCenter Advanced Edition consists of a single Informatica domain with one PowerCenter Repository Service, one PowerCenter Integration Service, and one Metadata Manager Service. The PowerCenter repository contains the Metadata Load folder for Metadata Manager and multiple folders with the PowerCenter objects that you create. The PowerCenter Integration Service runs workflows from all folders. In single domain mode, PowerCenter and Metadata Manager must run the same version and hotfix. The following figure shows PowerCenter Advanced Edition running on a single domain: If your license and product version includes Data Analyzer or Business Glossary, the domain also includes the services that run these products. Split Domain Mode In split domain mode, PowerCenter Advanced Edition consists of two Informatica domains, one for PowerCenter and one for Metadata Manager. The domain for PowerCenter includes a PowerCenter Repository Service and a PowerCenter Integration Service. The PowerCenter repository contains the folders with the PowerCenter objects that you create. The PowerCenter Integration Service runs workflows from these folders. The domain for Metadata Manager includes a Metadata Manager Service, and a dedicated PowerCenter Repository Service and PowerCenter Integration Service. The PowerCenter repository contains only the Metadata Load folder. The PowerCenter Integration Service runs resource loads only for Metadata Manager. Metadata Manager can run a later version or hotfix than PowerCenter. 4
The following figure shows PowerCenter Advanced Edition running on two domains: If your license and product version includes Data Analyzer, either domain also includes the Reporting Service, based on whether you use the PowerCenter or Metadata Manager repository as the Data Analyzer data source. If your license and product version includes Business Glossary, the domain for Metadata Manager also includes the services that run the Analyst tool and Business Glossary Desktop. Deciding to Use Split Domain Mode There are facts to consider when you decide whether to run PowerCenter Advanced Edition in split domain mode. The key advantage of split domain mode is that you can upgrade Metadata Manager to a later version or hotfix without having to upgrade PowerCenter at the same time. Every upgrade requires effort that needs to be justified, and holds the potential risk that behavior changes unexpectedly. The effort and the potential risk of upgrading are usually higher for PowerCenter than for Metadata Manager. For PowerCenter, you are responsible for validating the correct behavior of all objects because you create the objects (mappings, sessions, and workflows). For Metadata Manager, most objects are created, maintained, and certified by Informatica. However, when you use split domain mode, the following facts are also true: You cannot access Metadata Manager data lineage from the PowerCenter Designer. You might need to install multiple versions of the PowerCenter Client. For example, you use PowerCenter and Metadata Manager If you want to view session logs from Metadata Manager resource loads, you must also install the version of the PowerCenter Client. On UNIX, you need an additional user account for the second Informatica domain. You need additional database schemas for the additional repositories. You need more disk space to store two software versions. You have some additional overhead (RAM and CPU) when you run the additional Informatica domain and application services. Running in Split Domain Mode without Violating the License Agreement To use a later version of Metadata Manager without having to upgrade PowerCenter, you run an additional PowerCenter Repository Service and PowerCenter Integration Service to support Metadata Manager. You can deploy 5
these services for Metadata Manager to an additional domain. The additional domain can run on the same node as the original domain or it can run on a separate node. To run Metadata Manager in a second domain, you must have a valid license file for the required services. The license file is specific to the version of the second domain. For more information about running in split domain mode without violating your license agreement, or to get additional product licenses, contact your Informatica product representative. Using a Separate Node for the Additional Domain You can run the domains for PowerCenter and Metadata Manager on a single node, or you can run the additional domain on a separate node. When you run the additional domain on a separate node, all PowerCenter data integration activities run on one node and Metadata Manager runs on a different node. If you run Metadata Manager on a separate node, PowerCenter administration is completely independent from Metadata Manager administration. In addition, performance in one domain is not affected by activity in the other domain. However, you also need additional hardware and you might require additional licensing. The following figure shows how to split the domain across two nodes: If your license and product version includes Data Analyzer, either domain can include the Reporting Service, based on whether you use the PowerCenter or Metadata Manager repository as the Data Analyzer data source. If your license and product version includes Business Glossary, the domain for Metadata Manager on Node 2 includes the services that run the Analyst tool and Business Glossary Desktop. Moving from Single Domain Mode to Split Domain Mode If you run PowerCenter Advanced Edition in single domain mode and decide to move to split domain mode on the same or separate nodes, complete the following steps: 1. Export PowerCenter workflows for custom resources. 2. Disable the Metadata Manager Service. 3. Back up the Metadata Manager repository. 4. Install Informatica and create a domain. 6
5. Create services for Metadata Manager. 6. Import PowerCenter workflows for custom resources. 7. Remove the Metadata Manager Service from the domain for PowerCenter. 8. Upgrade Metadata Manager and migrate business glossaries. Step 1. Export PowerCenter Workflows for Custom Resources If you extract metadata from a custom metadata source, export the PowerCenter workflows that extract the metadata from the custom metadata source. The workflows are stored in the PowerCenter repository. Use pmrep to export all objects, including the workflows for custom resources, in the Metadata Load folder to an XML file. If you know the name of the workflow associated with a custom resource, you can use the Repository Manager to export that workflow to an XML file. Step 2. Disable the Metadata Manager Service Use the Administrator tool (Informatica Administrator) to disable the Metadata Manager Service. Note: Prior to version 9.0, the Administrator tool was called the PowerCenter Administration Console. This document uses the current terminology. Step 3. Back Up the Metadata Manager Repository Before you move to split domain mode, back up the Metadata Manager repository. You can use Metadata Manager command line programs or the native database backup option to back up the repository. The command line program that you use to back up the repository varies based on the Metadata Manager version. Use one of the following programs: backupcmdline In versions and earlier, you use the backupcmdline backup command to back up the Metadata Manager repository. In version 8.6.x, backupcmdline is located in the following directory: <Informatica installation directory>\server\mm_utilities\mmbackuputil In versions 9.0 through 9.6.0, backupcmdline is located in the following directory: <Informatica installation directory>\services\metadatamanagerservice\utilities\mmbackuputil The backup command uses the following syntax: mmrepocmd -task Backup -dbtype <database type> -jdbcurl "<url>" --user <username> --pass <password> --file <filename> [nthreads] In versions and later, you use the mmrepocmd backuprepository command to back up the Metadata Manager repository. mmrepocmd is located in the following directory: <Informatica installation directory>\services\metadatamanagerservice\utilities\mmrepocmd The backuprepository command uses the following syntax: [<-dn --domainname> domainname] [<-hp --gateway> gateway_host1:port gateway_host2:port...] [<-mm --mmservicename> mmservicename] 7
<<-url> http(s)://<host>:<port>> <<-u --user> user> [-ep --encryptedpassword] [<-pw --password> password] [<-n --namespace> namespace] [<-kt --keytab> keytab] <<-f --file> file> [<-nt --numthreads> numthreads] Step 4. Install Informatica and Create a Domain Using the same PowerCenter Advanced Edition version, install Informatica and create a domain for Metadata Manager. Complete the following tasks before you install: If PowerCenter Advanced Edition is installed on UNIX, create a separate user account for the additional Informatica instance. Create separate database schemas for the additional domain configuration repository and PowerCenter repository to be used by Metadata Manager. Use schema names that clearly separate these repositories from the repositories used by PowerCenter. Use the existing schema for the Metadata Manager repository. If you install on the same node as PowerCenter, create a separate directory for the installation. Use the following guidelines during the installation: The name of the additional domain must be different from the name of the domain for PowerCenter. Make sure the infa_shared folder for the additional domain is different from the folder used for PowerCenter. Step 5. Create Services for Metadata Manager In the domain for Metadata Manager, use the Administrator tool to create a PowerCenter Repository Service, PowerCenter Integration Service, and Metadata Manager Service. Creating the PowerCenter Repository Service 1. In the Administrator tool, create the PowerCenter Repository Service. Create a PowerCenter repository database, but do not create repository contents. 2. Start the PowerCenter Repository Service in Normal mode. Creating the PowerCenter Integration Service In the Administrator tool, create and enable the PowerCenter Integration Service. Creating the Metadata Manager Service 1. In the Administrator tool, create the Metadata Manager Service. Use the existing Metadata Manager repository and do not create contents for the Metadata Manager repository. 2. For Metadata Manager 8.6.x, select the Metadata Manager Service, and then select Actions > Upgrade Users and Groups. The upgrade process moves users, privileges, and roles in the Metadata Manager repository to the domain configuration repository. 3. Create the mm_files/mmservice directory in the new Metadata Manager domain. 8
4. Copy the contents of the Metadata Manager file location directory in the domain for PowerCenter to the new location in the domain for Metadata Manager. Step 6. Import PowerCenter Workflows for Custom Resources If you exported PowerCenter workflows for custom resources, import the workflows from the exported XML file into the PowerCenter repository. In the domain for Metadata Manager, use pmrep to import all objects including workflows for custom resources in the exported XML file into the Metadata Load folder. However, if you only exported workflows for custom resources, you can use the Repository Manager to import these workflows. Step 7. Remove the Metadata Manager Service 1. In the domain for PowerCenter, use the Administrator tool to remove the Metadata Manager Service from the domain. 2. Delete the Metadata Load folder from the Repository Service of the PowerCenter domain. Step 8. Upgrade Metadata Manager and Migrate Business Glossaries Download and install the latest version of PowerCenter Advanced Edition on the machine that runs the domain for Metadata Manager. If required, upgrade Metadata Manager. If Metadata Manager contains business glossaries and you upgrade from version or earlier to version or later, migrate the business glossaries to the Analyst tool. For information about upgrading Metadata Manager and migrating business glossaries, see the Informatica upgrade guides. If applicable, install the latest PowerCenter Advanced Edition hotfix. Running Two Domains on a Single Microsoft Windows Machine If you run PowerCenter Advanced Edition in split domain mode on a single Microsoft Windows machine, you might need to perform an additional step. On Windows, the Informatica domain is run as Informatica services. Informatica services is started automatically when the operating system starts. If the domains for PowerCenter and Metadata Manager are of the same major and minor version (only different hotfix versions), the names of the Informatica services are identical. Therefore, Windows starts only one of the Informatica services when the operating system starts. For version 8.6.x, you can run the other Informatica services by running the following command from a command prompt: <Informatica installation directory>/server/tomcat/bin/infaservice.bat startup For versions 9.0 and later, you can run the other Informatica services by running the following command from a command prompt: <Informatica installation directory>/tomcat/bin/infaservice.bat startup You can include the command in a batch file and add the batch file to the Windows startup folder. Windows runs the command when the operating system is started. 9
Metadata Extraction for Informatica Platform Resources Metadata Manager versions and later can extract metadata from different types of Informatica Platform metadata sources. In a split domain, the sources from which Metadata Manager can extract metadata vary based on which product versions you run and which domain includes the Model Repository Service. If Metadata Manager is in a version 10.x domain and PowerCenter is in a or 9.6.x domain, you can extract metadata from the following sources: If the Model Repository Service is in the same domain as Metadata Manager, you can extract metadata from a deployed application or an export resource (XML) file. Metadata Manager cannot extract metadata from a version 10.x application archive (IAR) file. If the Model Repository Service is in the same domain as PowerCenter, you can extract metadata from a deployed application, an application archive file, or an export resource file. If Metadata Manager is in a version 9.6.x domain and PowerCenter is in a domain that runs an earlier major or minor version excluding hotfixes, you can extract metadata from the following sources: If the Model Repository Service is in the same domain as Metadata Manager, you can extract metadata from a deployed application, an application archive file, or an export resource file. If the Model Repository Service is in the same domain as PowerCenter, you can extract metadata from an application archive file or an export resource file. For example, Metadata Manager is in a domain, PowerCenter is in a domain, and the Model Repository Service is in the same domain as PowerCenter. You can extract metadata from an application archive file or an export resource file but not from a deployed application. Alternatively, Metadata Manager is in a HotFix 3 domain, PowerCenter is in a domain, and the Model Repository Service is in the same domain as PowerCenter. In this configuration, you can extract metadata from a deployed application, an application archive file, or an export resource file. For more information about Informatica Platform resources, see the Informatica Metadata Manager Administrator Guide. Business Glossary Issues Metadata Manager users create Business Glossary resources to extract metadata from Analyst tool business glossaries and to relate business terms to metadata catalog objects. When you view a business term in the Analyst tool that has a related catalog object in Metadata Manager, the Analyst tool lists the related catalog object as a related data asset. In a split domain, a related data asset can appear as a hyperlink or as plain text. A related data asset appears as a hyperlink or as plain text based on which domain includes the Analyst Service: If the Analyst Service is in the same domain as Metadata Manager, the asset name appears as a hyperlink. You can click the asset name to view it in Metadata Manager. If the Analyst Service is in the same domain as PowerCenter, the asset name appears as plain text. For more information about Business Glossary resources, see the Informatica Metadata Manager Administrator Guide. For more information about Analyst tool business glossaries, see the Informatica Business Glossary Guide. Author Karthick Kandaswamy Principal QA Engineer 10
