Return Page A user types a website address into a web client (aka web browser) and an HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) request is sent to the appropriate web server via the URL (Uniform Resource Locator, such as The server responds by serving up the requested static (stationary) web page

Return Data A user types a website address into a web browser (such as Firefox) and an HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) request is sent to the appropriate web server The server responds by processing the request, querying (asking) for data from the database, retrieving the data, formatting the page and then serving the requested dynamic (active) web page

6 Dynamic Web Pages Dynamic web pages can serve up gourmet meals of information, so instead of a static burger page, you could have an organic pan-seared chicken Statler breast with a savory roasted garlic risotto and a basil pure, that is perfectly complimented with a tomato concasse and roasted artichoke sauce

8 Dynamic Web Pages Dynamic websites may be created using a LAMP stack. LAMP is a solution stack (i.e., a set of software programs) of open source (free) software. The acronym LAMP refers to the first letters of: Solution Stack Linux (Operating System) Apache Web Server (Web Server) MySQL (Database Server) PHP Interpreter (Application Server)

9 Relational Databases In databases, information is stored in tables, and areas that have the same name in different tables can be used to tie the information together. To use a real world example, imagine that you are a waiter working in a restaurant.

10 Relational Databases In tables, data is store in columns, which are also referred to as fields. A set of information, such as all the names in one family, is stored in rows, which are also known as recordsets. 1st table - Chicago Smiths Cindy Smith Harmon Smith Sissy Smith John Smith 2nd table - San Diego Smiths John Smith Shiela Smith Bob Smith Ted Smith

11 Relational Databases Tables are assigned a primary key, which is the main field in the table. A Foreign key column can be added to another tables, which is used to join that column to a similar column in the original table primary key user table userid firstname lastname studentid foreign key applications table studentid city state

12 Relational Databases Databases can be created using a tool called phpmyadmin

13 PHP and MySQL Use the PHP coding language with MySQL (SQL = Structured Query Language) to send commands to the database.
