1 KB Article Instructions For Installing a Remote SQL Server Instance and Separating the ION Enterprise Databases from the Application Summary The is applicable to ION Enterprise 5.0(all service packs) and SQL Server 2000 only. This document is be used as a tool for services to install a distributed SQL Server network where the ION Enterprise databases are to be installed on a separate server than the application server running ION Enterprise 5.0. **This document is for internal use only** Resolution ** NOTE: These instructions include two utility files as part of the required procedures: CreateIONlogins.sql Folder.bat / createfolder.vbs If you did not receive these files, please contact PWRM Technical Support. 1. Prepare two servers (ION server and DB server). Ensure that any old installations of MSDE or SQL Server have been completely removed from both machines, including all folders and registry keys related to the old installations. 2. Copy the utility files onto the DB server. PERFORM THE FOLLOWING TASKS ON THE ION ENTERPRISE SERVER: 3. Install ION Enterprise 5.0 on the desired server. Proceed with a default installation, including the installation of MSDE (See ION Enterprise 5.0 Commissioning Guide). 4. Stop all ION Services. 5. Unregister the logserver, and re-register without the a option: - On the ION Enterprise server, open a Command Shell window (Run cmd ). - Go to the ION Enterprise\system\bin directory. - Execute the command logsrv UnregServer. - Open the Services applet and confirm that the ION Log Inserter Service no longer appears. - Execute the command logsrv Service - Open the Services applet and confirm that the ION Log Inserter Service has re-appeared in the list (Refresh may be required).

2 6. On the ION server, open the Database Manager and detach the following databases: a. ION_Data b. ION_Network c. ION_SystemLog From the Database Manager main screen, select Detach. Select the database that you want to detach from the dropdown menu. A confirmation message will appear.

3 Repeat this process for each of the three databases. 7. Copy (don t cut and paste) the Database folder from the ION Server onto the DB server. 8. Re-attach the ION _Data database on the ION Server (this will allow ION services to be restarted in a later step of the procedure). Open Database Manager from the ION Management Console, and select Attach. Click the ellipsis ( ) in the above dialog box to select which database to attach.

4 Choose the ION_Data.mdf file. Click Open. Click OK. Click OK.

5 You should now see the ION_Data represented in the Tree pane of the Database Manager window. 9. Repeat the above procedure for the ION_Network database. 10. On the ION server, edit the following Registry keys located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Power Measurement\ION Enterprise\5.0\Database\ by replacing the name of the ION server with the name of the SQL Server in the key values. Key Name IONServer NOMServer SYSLOGServer Value <DB Server Name>\ION <DB Server Name>\ION <DB Server Name>\ION 11. Select each of the registry keys listed above, and Export the registry key to a location on the DB server.

6 Select the Databases registry key. Under the Registry menu, select Export Registry File

7 Save the export file to the DB Server.

8 PERFORM THE FOLLOWING TASKS ON THE SQL DATABASE SERVER: 12. Install SQL Server on the DB server, creating a named instance of the server called ION : Select Local Computer. Confidential Page 8 3/28/2007

9 Select the option to Create a new instance of SQL Server. Enter the appropriate values in the Name and Company fields. Confidential Page 9 3/28/2007

10 Click Yes to accept the License Agreement. Select Server and Client Tools. Confidential Page 10 3/28/2007

11 Uncheck the Default box, and enter the name ION into the Instance Name field. Select Typical installation. Choose destination folders for SQL Server Program Files and Data Files. Confidential Page 11 3/28/2007

12 Select to use the same account for each service, then select Use a Local System account. Select Mixed Mode authentication. Enter the following sa password: ION!Everywhere Confidential Page 12 3/28/2007

13 Click Next. Choose a licensing mode that is appropriate for your installation. If you do not know which to select, contact your IS department. Confidential Page 13 3/28/2007

15 Select Yes, then click Finish. 13. Install SQL Server Service Pack 3a on the DB server. Click Next. Confidential Page 15 3/28/2007

16 Click Yes to accept the license. Select the ION instance in the dropdown box, then click Next. Confidential Page 16 3/28/2007

17 Select to use the SQL Server system administrator login. Enter the sa password that was previously entered in the original installation (ION!Everywhere). Confidential Page 17 3/28/2007

20 Click Next. The above screen appears Followed by the screen above. Setup is complete. 14. Create the required ION and Report database logins as follows: Confidential Page 20 3/28/2007

21 Open Microsoft Query Analyzer (Start / Programs / Microsoft SQL Server / Query Analyzer). Select the SQL Server instance from the dropdown list (i.e., <db server name>\ion ), or type it into the SQL Server field. Enter the sa Login name and password, and select OK. 22 Go to the File menu, and select Open. Navigate to the location of the CreateIONlogin.sql file. Confidential Page 22 3/28/2007

23 Execute the script by selecting the Execute menu item under the Query menu, OR by clicking the green go arrow in the Query Analyzer toolbar. 15. Create the following folder structure on the DB server. Copy the file Folder.bat to the drive on the DB Server where the folder should be created, then run the batch file. 16. Replace the Database folder created by the batch file with the Database folder that was previously copied from the ION Server. Confidential Page 23 3/28/2007

24 17. Share the ION Enterprise folder with the share name ION-DB. Right-click on the ION Enterprise directory after it has been created, and select Properties. Go to the Sharing tab and enter ION-DB as the Share name. 18. Using SQL Enterprise Manager, attach each of the ION databases to the ION database instance on the DB Server machine: Confidential Page 24 3/28/2007

25 Right click on the Databases folder, and select All Tasks ->, Attach Database Browse for the location of the.mdf file (main data file). Confidential Page 25 3/28/2007

26 Confirm that the MDF and LDF files are correct. Enter the proper database name in the Attach as: field (i.e. ION_Data, ION_Network, or ION_SystemLog). Specify sa as the database owner. Select OK. 19. Find the Registry (. reg) file on the DB Server that was exported in a previous step, and import the registry keys by double-clicking this file. Double click the.reg file. 27 When prompted, select Yes to confirm to add the information to the registry. Click OK. Confidential Page 27 3/28/2007

29 PERFORM THE FOLLOWING TASKS ON THE ION ENTERPRISE SERVER: 20. Start the following ION Services in the following order: Network Router, Log Inserter Service, and Query Server. 21. Open ION Designer and connect to LOGINSTER.<ION SERVER NAME>. Open the Log Acquisition Module. Right-click on Log Acquisition 1.

30 Double-click the LAM1 Data Source setup register. The Modify Database Connection Properties window appears. Change the Data Source to the name of the new SQL Server instance (i.e. <DB Server Name>\ION). Click OK.

31 22. Change the data source of the QUERY SERVER. In ION Designer, open the QUERY Server. Open the Query Modules folder. Right-click Query 1.

32 Double-click on the QM1 Connection String setup register The Modify Database Connection Properties window appears.

33 Change the Data Source to the name of the new SQL Server instance (i.e. <DB Server Name>\ION). Click OK. 23. Close ION Designer. 24. Stop all ION services on the ION Server. 25. Unregister the PMLnetman service. - Open a Command Shell window (Run cmd ). - Go to the ION Enterprise\system\bin directory. - Execute the command pmlnetman UnregServer. 26. Reboot the machine. 27. Update the ION Network Router service. a. Register the PMLnetman service. - Open a Command Shell window (Run cmd ). - Go to the ION Enterprise\system\bin directory. - Execute the command pmlnetman Service b. Remove the MSSQL dependency from the service. - Start the regedt32 registry editor (NOTE: regedit will not work for this step).

34 Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

35 Navigate to the PMLNetman folder, and double-click the DependOnService key. Remove the reference to MSSQLServer. Click OK, then close the registry editor. 28. Reboot the machine. All ION services should automatically start after the reboot. 29. Confirm that the system is functioning correctly.

36 - Add devices to the Management Console and verify that you can connect through Vista and view real-time data and data from Data Log viewers. - END OF PROCEDURE - APPENDIX A - INSTRUCTIONS FOR MULTIPLE PRIMARY ION SERVERS Each database in the SQL Server must have a unique name. Therefore, the default names of the ION databases must be changed for each instance of ION Server. For example, the ION_Data database could be changed to ION_Data_Server1. Similar changes are required for ION_Network and ION_Syslog. Since the procedure assumes the default names for the ION databases, this change will also require the following changes to be made to update all references to the actual database names, which is referred to as the 'Initial Catalog' by ION Enterprise: 1. Update registry keys on each ION Server (add to Step 11): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Power Measurement\ION Enterprise\5.0\Databases\IONInitialCatalog HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Power Measurement\ION Enterprise\5.0\Databases\NOMInitialCatalog HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Power Measurement\ION Enterprise\5.0\Databases\SYSLOGInitialCatalog 2. Update LogServer settings on each ION Server (ref: step 22 and also edit the InitialCatalog field with the appropriate name). 3.
