1 Enterprise Data Architect Position Summary Farmer Mac maintains a considerable repository of financial data that spans over two decades. Farmer Mac is looking for a hands-on technologist and data architect who has experience in performance, integrity and security of databases to enhance the current environment so that it aligns with the strategic direction of the business. The database administrator will need to evaluate the current DBMS and provide recommendations to the business that will enhance the current offering to bring database best practices and standards to the DMBS, while maintaining the current environment and supporting new database projects across the enterprise. The Enterprise Data Architect (EDA) will develop a detailed knowledge of the database environment. The EDA will become the subject matter expert on security, integrity, content, and uses of data within the DBMS. The EDA must understand the quality and interrelationship between core elements of the data repository and data products and how users interact with the data. The EDA will consult with Information Technology, data analytics, product creation and development staff to design and implement scripts, database objects, databases, software components and analyses that will support product quality. The EDA will have an in depth understanding of potential uses of the data and metadata in the database environment to inform business decisions. The EDA has business responsibility for determining the information the enterprise will capture, retain and exploit. This individual will possess a combination of business knowledge, technical skills, and people skills to define and guide data strategy. This individual will need to initiate projects, follow up on initiated projects and communicate issues and risk to management under limited supervision from direct management. The EDA is solely responsible for the maintenance of project plans, strategic initiatives, and key performance indicators (KPI) across all database environments. The People You Will Work With The position will report directly to the Senior Manager of Information Technology. The position will directly liaison with members of the Farmer Mac s Infrastructure, Development, Operations, Compliance, Data Analytics, and Loan Administration teams. Page 1 of 5

2 Where and When You Will Work The position will be based in Farmer Mac s headquarters located at 1999 K Street NW, Washington, DC. Work outside core business hours may be required for planned and unplanned activities to complete time sensitive projects or to attend off-site meetings or events. Periodic travel is expected of this position. Primary Responsibilities and Duties Security & Availability Manage individual user access to the DBMS environment and provision rights to users that require access to the DBMS. Provide periodic reports to management and compliance on database permissions and changes to databases permissions for audit purposes. Maintain Records of change to production DBMS. Ensure that all production and development database back up plans are operational and that backups are performed and comply with Farmer Mac policy and industry best practice Coordinate with the managed services provider (MSP) to ensure that the MSP meets all database requirements in the statement-of-work (SOW) Work with the MSP to perform regular testing of the DB environment including business continuity testing for backup and restore for all databases Monitor SQL Jobs and database mail tasks to ensure internally developed applications maintain up-time and functionality for the business user Support off-the shelf software DBMS implementations including: individual user access to the databases, troubleshooting database issues in vendor databases, backup and restore of vendor databases, consolidation of vendor DBMS packages (where possible) Collaborate with the MSP to develop key performance indicators (KPI) to ensure accountability with the MSP Provide insight for the consolidation of Farmer Mac DBMS environment to reduce IT cost and streamline business critical databases Experience with SQL Server encryption methodologies Experience with Azure SQL database Proficient in performance tuning Proficient in scripting using Power Shell Experience in SQL Server clustering, always on and disaster recovery concepts Familiar with large multi-terabyte instance management, including partition management Ability to troubleshoot database production problems and database connectivity issues Page 2 of 5

3 Database Development Collaborate with software development team: o Ensure that all internally developed applications comply with the enterprise s database standard o Deploy new software features or bug fixes that require database changes o Ensure the timely update of all database documentation related to internally developed applications o Rectify bugs in database or software code o Support internally developed applications by developing database objects or scripts that can be used to troubleshoot issues o Identify software development projects that will enhance the user experience in internally developed software o Perform database refresh from production to lower environments Preside over all changes to databases with complete responsibility for all changes made in the production database environment. Maintain all database documentation including detailed documentation for all changes made in the production environment Experience with: o Reviewing query performance and optimizing code o Writing queries used for front-end applications (websites, desktop applications, or cloud apps) o Designing and coding database tables to store the application s data o Data modeling to visualize database structure o Working with application developers to create optimized queries o Creating database triggers for automation, e.g., automatic notifications o Creating table indexes to improve database performance o Programming views, stored procedures, and functions o Agile/Scrum development methodologies Familiarity with DevOps methodologies and processes Strategy & Policy Performs a key management and thought leadership role in the area of database administration, including database security, connectivity, reliability, and recovery. Defines and achieves the database strategy roadmap for the enterprise; including data modeling, implementation and data management for our enterprise data warehouse and advanced data analytics systems. Ensure that the DBMS complies with internal, regulatory, and compliance policies with respect to security. This includes but is not limited to: encryption (database and column level), individual user access to the DBMS, and reviews of user permissions and maintaining documentation for database audits. Develop a policy to ensure that all database changes are made with source control to maintain the reliability and stability of all database environments. Responsibilities will include setting the vision, gathering requirements, gaining business consensus, performing vendor and product evaluations, mentoring Page 3 of 5

4 business and development resources, deliver solutions, training and documentation. Defines and implements the strategy roadmap for enterprise data, implementation and data management for new data sources, publicly available data, business-to-business partnerships and advanced Data Analytics systems. Establishes standards and guidelines for the design & development, tuning, deployment and maintenance of information, advanced data analytics, and text mining models and physical data persistence technologies. Provides leadership in establishing analytic environments required for structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. Proven track record to drive rapid prototyping and design for new projects and analytic R&D environments. Ability to translate broader business initiatives into clear team objectives and concrete individual goals, aligning appropriately with other groups for efficient, coordinated action. Provide guidance on implementation of DBMS monitoring tools to fulfill the enterprise s need for monitoring of database environment to meet industry best practices for internal, regulatory and compliance policies. Communication Collaborate with IT teams and management to devise a data strategy that adheres to industry best practice Collaborate with business users to ensure that all data that enters the production environment conforms to data validation policies to ensure the availability of the highest quality data possible Participates in Business Intelligence projects, and works with analytical group and IT to ensure implementation using both Agile and Waterfall methods. Works with staff and customers to understand the business requirements and business processes, for DBMS design Works with consulting teams to implement new ETL tools and devise plans for the maintenance and regular review of all ETL tools Demonstrates a solid understanding of key BI trends to train other staff on the subject. Education and Experience Bachelor s degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems, preferred MCSA or MCSE Skills: o DBMS software (MS SQL), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Data modeling tools (Visio, ERWin), PowerBI, and Database Tools (Compliance, Monitoring, and Security) Page 4 of 5
