5 Befor ore You Begin 1 Before You Begin Welcome to xpresso for Dreamweaver! This book contains complete instructions for installing and configuring the xpresso for Dreamweaver. This chapter contains information you need to know before you begin installing the xpresso for Dreamweaver software. What is xpresso for Dreamweaver? xpresso for Dreamweaver enables you to use Adobe Dreamweaver to design dynamic, rule-based documents. xpresso for Dreamweaver is part of the xpression product suite, and is designed to use your existing digital assets to help you quickly design, compose and publish highly targeted and segmented communications. You can also easily create well-designed relationship statements and billing notices that combine transactional data with targeted marketing messages. Software and Hardware Requirements xpresso for Dreamweaver has specific requirements for operation. For a list of hardware and software requirements, please see the xpression Operating Requirements document located at the root of the xpression ebooks CD. Supported Data Types xpresso for Dreamweaver and the xpression Server support industry standard XML data sources and data schema files for your variable data input. Your variable records can all be contained in a single XML file or broken out into separate XML files. If you have multiple XML files, store them all in the same directory, and in a location that xpresso for Dreamweaver can access. Each of your XML files for a particular document must be compatible with the schema used to create the document. With this release, xpresso for Dreamweaver supports the following data types: String, Boolean (true/false), DateTime, Date (format: YYYY-MM-DD), Time, Integer, Double, and Float. Installation Overview This section will provide you with an overview of the entire xpresso for Dreamweaver installation process, and includes a checklist to help guide you through the process and ensure that you don t miss any steps. Here are the steps for the overall installation process: 1. Obtain your serial number. For more information, see Licensing Your xpresso for Dreamweaver Software. 2. Install the xpresso client software. For more information, see Installing on Windows, or Installing on a Macintosh. 3. Register your software. For more information, see Registering Your Software. 4. Verify your installation. For more information, see Verifying Your Installation. 3
6 Installation Directory Paths Chapter 1 Before You Begin During the installation process, the installer uses the system default temporary directory (%TMP%($TMP)) to store temporary files. The installer doesn t support non-english characters in this path. If your default temp directory contains unsupported characters, you must change the path to one that contains only English characters before installation. You can reset the path after the installation completes. Licensing Your xpresso for Dreamweaver Software There are three main components that are necessary to license your xpresso for Dreamweaver software, you need all three of these to complete the process: Serial Number. The serial number is specific to your company and the xpresso client applications purchased, specifying a certain number of licenses for each application. EMC Document Sciences Customer Care provides the serial number to your company or administrator along with the installation files. Request Code. The request code is specific to the machine upon which you run the xpresso client. This request code secures the software from being copied to other machines. License Key. The license key is granted to you from the EMC Document Sciences self-service activation application or manually from EMC Document Sciences Customer Care department. The license key s term of validity is set by the serial number and the master agreement with your company. You must have your company s serial number in order to complete the xpresso for Dreamweaver installation program. Once you install the software, you ll need to locate the request code, which you ll use to obtain your license key. For more information, see Registering Your Software. For any questions or problems, contact EMC Document Sciences Solution Support: Online Support: Telephone Support: United States: Canada: Worldwide: For additional worldwide access numbers, visit: Existing xpresso Installations If you have a previous release of xpresso for Dreamweaver installed on the same computer that you are going to install this new release, you can either install over your existing release, or uninstall it first. If you install without uninstalling first, the installation program will confirm that you want to overwrite your existing install. Click Yes to continue with the installation, and overwrite your existing installation. Or click No to cancel the installation and uninstall your existing installation first. For specific instructions on uninstalling your software version and platform, see Upgrading Your Software. Note If you are installing xpresso for Dreamweaver on a machine that is running both Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 and Adobe Dreamweaver Creative Suite 3 or 4, you must ensure that the installation program uses the CS3 or CS4 Extension Manager during the installation process. For more information, see Running Both Dreamweaver 8 and Creative Suite 3 or 4 Together. 4
