1 JMA 260: New Media Production Flyer (Adobe InDesign) Practice Exercise The following instructions are based on the InDesign chapter of Using Adobe InDesign CS, Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS: Design Professional by Botello & Eisner-Reding. This introductory activity will help you create a document using Adobe InDesign. You ll need four files (Project text.txt, WindmillsColor.psd, WindmillsGhost.psd, WindmillsSilhouette.psd), which can be found on the Resources page of the class website page (IndesignExerciseFiles.zip). Opening a New Document 1. Open Adobe Indesign CS2 2. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu and then choose Units and Increments. 3. On the Preferences box with Units and Increments highlighted, 4. Set the Origin to Page. 5. Set Horizontal to inches. 6. Set Vertical to inches. Click OK. (See figure 1) Create new document Figure 1: Preferences box 7. Select File >>New>>Document. 8. Type 1 in the Number of pages box 9. Set Orientation to Landscape. 10. Click OK (see figure 2) 1

2 Figure 2: New document box Adding Text Frames 1. Click the Type tool and while hold the left mouse down, drag to create a text frame about three inches in length and about two inches in height. After you ve made the text frame, click the frame with the Selection tool. You should see the Control box at the top portions of the screen with the X and Y coordinates and the Width and Height. If you do not see the Control bar, select Window>>Control. 2. Type in the X box. 3. Type in the Y box 4. Type in the W (Width) box 5. Type in the H (Height) box (see figure 3) Figure 3: Control bar 6. Double-click the text frame (or click the Type tool and click inside the text frame) and type (press Enter after the word flowers): 2

3 Flowers Of the Valley 7. Choose the Selection tool and click the text frame. Choose Type>>Font>>Impact to set the text to type Impact (or a similar font). 8. Click the Type tool and select the word Flowers by dragging across it. With Flowers highlighted, choose Window>>Type & Tables>> Character to display the Character pallet. Set the type point size to 83 (see figure 4). Click the Selection tool to de-select the text. Figure 4: Set Point size 9. Click the Type tool and select the words of the Valley. Set the type point size to 52 (the text may disappear) and the Leading to 44 (see figure 5). Click the Selection tool to de-select the text. Figure 5: Set Leading 10. Create a second text frame (just as you did in the above step). The size of the text frame doesn t matter at this point. After you create the text frame, choose the Selection tool and click the frame. On the Control bar, set the X and Y coordinates to and 4.5 respectively. 11. Set the W and H to and

4 12. With the text frame selected, right-click on it and select Text Frame Options. Type 2 in the Number box under Columns and type.5 in the Gutter box (see figure 6). Click OK. Figure 6: Text Frame options 13. Click the Selection tool and then click the text frame you just made, if it is not selected. 14. Select Window>>Type & Tables>> Character to display the Character pallet. Set the type to Gill Sans MT and the size 10 and set the Leading to Auto. 15. Click the Paragraph tab (or select Window>>Type & Tables>> Paragraph) and select the Justify with last line aligned left option. Uncheck Hyphenate. 16. You have been provided a text document (DesignText.txt) with some text characters (fill text). Copy the text, double-click inside the 2-column text frame you just created, and then paste (Edit>>Paste) it into the text frame. 17. Click the Flowers of the Valley text frame with the Selection tool. Select Window>>Text Wrap to display the Text Wrap palette. Click the Wrap around bounding box and type in the Bottom offset box (see figure 7). 4

5 Figure 7: Text Wrap 18. In the left column, select the letter D on the line beginning with Duis autem veleum. Select Window>>Type & Tables>>Paragraph to display the Paragraph pallet. Type 4 in the Drop Cap Number of Lines box (see figure 8). Figure 8: Drop Caps 19. Click the Character tab or choose Window>>Type & Tables>> Character and type 40 in the Tracking box (See figure 9). 5

6 Figure 9: Tacking 20. Repeat this procedure for the A in column 1 that begins with A un Angleso and the A in column 2 that begins with A t vero eros. Create Layers and working with Images 1. Click the Selection tool and then click anywhere on the Paste area to de-select any objects that might be selected. Zoom out so you can see the entire document window. 2. Select Window>>Layers to display the Layers palette. Click the Create New Layer button. 3. Double-click the layer text (Layer 2) and type Background in the Layers Option box. 4. Click the Selection tool. With the Background layer selected, select File>>Place and locate the Windmills Ghost.psd file. Click Open on the Place box. 5. Position the cursor (loaded graphic icon) at the top left of the Document Window and click. The image should appear over the document window (see figure 10). 6

7 Figure 10: Background image 1. On the Layers palette, drag the Background layer down so that it is below layer 1 (the text layer). 2. Create a new layer and call it Image. 3. Click the Rectangle Frame tool (see figure 11). Draw a Rectangle frame roughly 3 inches wide and 3 inches high in the center of the document window. Click the Selection tool. Figure 11: Rectangle Frame tool 4. With the Rectangle frame selected, select File>>Place and locate the Windmills Color.psd file. Click Open on the Place box. The photo should fill the frame. 5. Click the Direct Selection tool and click on the photo. On the Control bar type: 7

8 50 in the Scale X box 50 in the Scale Y box 6. Click the Selection tool and then click the photo. 7. Click Object>>Fitting>>Fit Frame to Content. 8. With the frame selected, click the center Reference point on the Control bar (see figure 11a). Figure 11a: Reference point 9. Type 5.8 in the X Location box, type 4.5 in the Y Location box. 10. Type 3.32 in the Width box. 11. Type in the Height box. 12. Click Object>>Fitting>>Fit Content Proportionally. 13. With the photo still selected, select Window>>Text Wrap to display the Text Wrap palette. Click the Wrap around bounding box and type in all four of the Offset text boxes (see figure 12). 8

9 Figure 12: Text wrap options 14. Click to de-select the photo. 15. Create a new layer and call the new layer Windmill. 16. Click the Selection tool. With the Windmill layer selected, select File>>Place and locate the Windmills Silhouette.psd file. Click Open on the Place box. 17. Click the loaded graphics icon on the F of the word Flowers. With the Windmill photo still selected, select Window>>Text Wrap to display the Text Wrap palette. Click the Wrap around Objects shape button box. 18. With the Windmill photo selected, click the Selection tool. Look at the Control bar and make sure the upper left Reference point is selected. If it is not, click on it (see figure 12a) and then type in the X Location box on the Control bar, 1.85 in the Y Locations box. Figure 12a: Reference point 19. Click the Direct Selection tool and then click the Windmill photo. 9

11 Figure 14: Complete document 22. Save the file and upload it to your PUB folder. Make a link to it (the source file the file with the.indd extension) on your Project Portfolio page. Name the link and the document YOURLASTNAME_Indesign.indd 23. Save your file as a PDF, upload it to your PUB folder and link it to your project portfolio page. To save the file as a PDF, select File>>Export and then select Adobe PDF from the Save as type drop-down menu on the Export box. 11
