1 FORMS A TRUE TEST OF ABILITY Business forms are the true test of a typesetter s skill level. They might not be as exciting as creating a full-page automobile ad for a national magazine, but they require much more software and typography knowledge. When a client brings a form in to you, look for ways to improve it; don t repeat design and typographical mistakes that come with the form! CHAPTER GOALS Create functional, well-designed, identity systems Consider printing, paper, and finishing processes when designing identity systems Learn when to use lining or old-style figures Typeset academic degrees, acronyms, and titles Design newspaper advertisements according to specifications TERMINOLOGY Perforation #10 envelope #9 envelope Self-mailer Padded tablet Visual hierarchy Legibility Academic degree Old-style figure Text figure Titling figure Lining figure Envelope converting InDesign preferences Imposition Step and repeat Flush right tab Stroke panel Align stroke to inside Align stroke to center Align stroke to outside Negative tracking Small caps Initialism PROJECTS 10A Letterhead 10B Envelope 10C Business Card 10D Yellow Pages Ad 10E Newspaper Display Ad 10F Table BUSINESS FORMS Student Handout KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS Function Mac Windows Changing InDesign preferences InDesign> Preferences Edit>Preferences Flush right tab Shift+Tab Shift+Tab Stroke panel Cmd+F10 Ctrl+F10 Change leading and point size increments Make leading apply to a whole paragraph rather than to characters Align Stroke on inside of frame InDesign> Preferences> Units & Increments InDesign> Preferences> Type>Apply Leading to Entire Paragraphs Cmd+F10, Press Align Stroke to Inside icon on Stroke panel production tips Always begin by critiquing the existing form to discover if there are ways it might be improved. Understand how the form will be used, updated, and printed before creating it. Always complete the form yourself to see how easy or difficult it is to use. Use tabs and leaders for lines not underscores. Edit> Preferences> Units & Increments Edit> Preferences> Type>Apply Leading to Entire Paragraphs Ctrl+F10, Press Align Stroke to Inside icon on Stroke panel 10 EXPLORING ADOBE INDESIGN CS DELMAR, CENGAGE LEARNING CHAPTER 10 PAGE 1

4 10C BUSINESS CARD 1. Create a new document, selecting US Business Card in the Page Size menu. All margins 0.25". Place 10 Swatches Snippet on the pasteboard. It can be found in the 10 Artwork and Resources folder. 2. Draw a frame that extends to all four margins. Fill it with Pantone 3755U from the Swatches panel. (This color was added to your document when you placed the Swatches Snippet.) 3. Option+Click (Mac) or Alt+Click (Win) to open Corner Options on the Control panel. Choose the Bevel style for the upper right corner. Drag the bevel edge to the 21/2 inch mark on the ruler. Place the Folded Corner Snippet created in Chapter 10 and position it in the upper right corner. Zoom in to 4000% to make sure the edges are aligned. 4. Place the Dragonfly Logo Snippet that you created while reading Chapter 10. Press Shift+Cmd (Mac) or Shift+Ctrl (Win) to resize the group proportionately. 5. Type the name and address in a single text frame. Check that Ph.D. is set correctly. When you type the last line with the fax and phone number, be sure to use a Flush Right tab: Shift+Tab (see invisibles in screen shot). 10D YELLOW PAGES AD 1. Measure the ad and set up the document using the pica scale. 2. Place and resize the Dragonfly Snippet. 3. For the bulleted copy, center the longest line and then position a vertical guide at the left edge of the bullet. Change the line back to left alignment. Highlight all four bullet lines and enter a left indent, until the left edge of the bullets line up. 4. Try to duplicate this display ad exactly. You will need to use increments of points for both the type size and leading. Check that Ph.D. is set correctly. This is a lot of information to pack into a tiny ad, but when it is done well, it is a work of art! EXPLORING ADOBE INDESIGN CS DELMAR, CENGAGE LEARNING CHAPTER 10 PAGE 4
5 1 0E NEWSPAPER DISPLAY AD 1. T he ad is a 3/4 page vertical. Find the dimensions from the metroparent magazine in Chapter 10 (Visual10 8). This example is full size. 2. Place and position the Dragonfly Logo Snippet created earlier. The photos are 10E Barn Sketch.psd, and 10E Dr. Tollefson.tif in the 10 Artwork & Resources folder. 3. The copy is in a single, twocolumn text frame. Adjust the gutter width and Use Span Columns for the top portion. 3. Production notes: To create the stacked fraction, type the three characters (1/2) and select them. Then go to the Control panel options menu and select OpenType>Fractions. Use the correct hyphens and dashes. Use a left indent, not tabs, for the bulleted copy. Your copy should look almost identical to this sample. Be sure to run spell check! 6 BROCHURE OUTSIDE PAGE 5 MISSION PAGE 6 MAILING P ROJECT 10F BROCHURE NOTE: As you work through this project, please follow the panel page numbers referred to in your text and handout not those shown on the Pages panel. 1. O pen 10F Brochure.indd from the 10 Artwork & Resources folder. This is a great template it has multiple page sizes shown as spreads which create the necessary offset panel widths. (You should save a copy of this!)as you work, notice that the pages are numbered on a nonprinting layer in the slug area below the document. 2. Much of the copy has been typed you will need to place and apply the formatting. Some paragraph and character styles have been created. You will need to format much of the copy by yourself, without styles. 3. Page 1: Be sure to work on Layer 1 throughout this project. Place 10F Barn Front Cover.psd on Page 1, extending it to the PAGE 1 FRONT COVER outer right bleed edge and 1/16 over the left edge of the page. Crop as shown in example. Place the Dragonfly Logo Snippet you created earlier, in the upper right corner, flush with the margin guides. Place 10F Front Cover Type.idms on the front cover and position it as shown in the sample. 5. P age 6: Place 10F Barn.psd on Page 6, and crop and rotate it as shown. Place the Dragonfly Logo Snippet, press Shift+Cmd (Mac) or Shift+Ctrl (Win) to scale proportionately. Rotate the image. Add the address in a rotated text frame. 6. P age 5: Place 10F Girl with binoculars.psd. Crop, and center horizontally with the bottom edge bleeding off page. Place the copy 10F Page 5. Apply paragraph styles. Since this is the flap that folds inside, all the styles will use the word, flap. 6. P lace and scale the Dragonfly Logo Snippet on page 5, above the photo.
