2 What is Impress? Part of the OpenOffice application suite Backed by Sun Microsystems Use it to build presentations, slide shows and audio visual sequences A rival to Microsoft PowerPoint Free software

3 Running Impress Click on the OpenOffice quick start icon Select Presentation from the menu This may differ on Linux and Mac OS systems

4 Getting Started Use the Impress Wizard to get started Create a blank presentation in three simple steps

5 Templates OpenOffice contains a selection of templates for Impress or you can design your own.

7 Views Normal: slide design Outline: text outline of presentation Notes: lecture notes for presenter Handout: handout for audience Slide Sorter: rearrange order of slides

8 Normal View This is the main view for designing slides, choosing the layout and adding illustrations.

9 Outline View Use a series of bullet points to outline a presentation.

10 Lecture Notes The Notes Master Page lets you change the layout of your notes. Lecture notes can be written in Impress and printed out.

11 Handout View Choose from six different layouts for handouts.

12 The Slide Sorter Use the slide sorter to rearrange the slide sequence.

13 Slide Names Slide numbers can be replaced by names for ease of reference.

14 Master Page User the Master Page to give your slides a common background and uniform appearance.

15 Slide Layouts Choose one of the many layout options for each slide

16 Toolbars The Impress toolbars contain a wide variety of tools that can be used to design slides. Format text Draw shapes and arrows Add tables and charts

17 Positioning Turn on the Grid to aid positioning Turn on Snap to Grid Use the Alignment tool Use the Arrange tool Use the arrow keys to nudge items into place

18 Fontwork Fancy text effects can be created using Fontwork. Just click on the icon.

19 Add Pictures Use pictures to enliven slides and to reinforce your message. Insert directly or cut and paste. Add images directly from a scanner. Add photographs. Add images from OpenOffice Draw. Insert charts from OpenOffice Calc. Insert clip art from the OpenOffice Gallery.

20 Animations Use animations to add emphasis: Make text and pictures appear at the click of a mouse Animate pictures Animate TEXT

21 Automatic Timings Make objects appear, disappear and move after a set time rather than following a mouse click.

22 Add Sound Include sound effects. Include audio clips. Adding sound and automatic timings can turn a slide show into an audio visual sequence.

23 Slide Transitions Impress offers a wide variety of slide transitions. Transitions between slides can be the same throughout the presentation or set individually for each new slide......but don't over do it!

24 Function Keys & Shortcuts Use the function keys and keyboard shortcuts in Impress to save time. + + = Group/Ungroup objects The User Guide contains a full list.

26 Mouse Controls You can use a mouse to control the slide show PREVIOUS SLIDE MENU NEXT SLIDE or ANIMATION NEXT SLIDE or ANIMATION

27 Wireless Mouse A wireless mouse pointer can be used. These duplicate the functions of a mouse combined with a laser pointer.

28 Rehearse Timings Rehearse your slide show with an on-screen clock. 00:00:25

29 Hide Slides It is possible to drop slides from a presentation without deleting them. Right click on the thumbnail of the slide to dropped. From the context sensitive menu select Hide Slide. To make the slide visible again, select Show Slide.

30 Extensions Like other OpenOffice applications you can add new functions to Impress in the form of Extensions. Download from the OpenOffice website.

31 Saving Your Presentation Save in OpenOffice Impress format (ODP) Save in PowerPoint format (PPT) Export in Portable Document Format (PDF) Export as Macromedia Flash (SWF) Plus others...
