3 DISCUSS If I said I wanted this book to be 7 pages, what is your response? I first put together your books with too many pages. I quickly (and on no sleep after a long drive) thought 12 book pages, divide that by 2 so 6 flat pages. FAR TOO MANY PAGES. What kind of math should I have used? What should I have divided 12 by? Do all multi-page documents use signatures? wp-content/uploads/2007/11/ DSC00830_b.jpg 3
4 Vector Not DPI-dependent Raster/Bitmap DPI-dependent Illustrator and Photoshop have never been replaced. BUT through 1990s QUARK was the leader. Not Adobe, but far superior to Pagemaker UNTIL 4

6 VOCABULARY Vector Raster = Bitmap DPI (Dots Per Inch) = PPI (Pixels Per Inch) CMYK (pigment) = Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black (=Key plate) RGB (light) = Red, Green, Blue + a lot of File Format acronyms (JPG, PNG, TIFF). You WILL learn these. Don t be overwhelmed now. J VECTOR: 1. 1) Using Illustrator, start a New document. Letter sized. No bleeds, no margins. 2. 2) Using 5 different typefaces, type Design Your Life (caps or lower case up to you). Create close to the sizes shown on next screen. Adjust leading. Color optional. 3. 3) Outline type. 4. 4) Color mode should default to CMYK. 5. 5) Save as.ai. 6

11 WHEN FINISHED: 9. Upload JPG as Comment (photo)on 2423 FB page to my Post. Scanning in this lab: Use the computer in the back of the room (AA208). Image Capture will help you. Be aware of the size of the scan (see specs on Project Sheet above). Scanning on another computer: It depends on the system. If you are on a Mac and a scanner is attached (obviously ), search for a driver or program on your computer. Otherwise, you use Image Capture again. Always be aware of you Photoshop Math : Length x Width x RESOLUTION. (Doesn t actually equal anything, but all 3 measurements must be considered EVERY time with raster images. Not with vector.) You can scan something in small L x W and really high resolution, then later enlarge L x W, reducing resolution. BUT YOU CANNOT successfully enlarge L x W without reducing the resolution. TIPS: Also be aware of where things are saving on your computer. Macs like to default to Documents, which is a pain to find without making an alias on your desktop. If you are using a computer only to scan, just save your image to your external drive, Dropbox, etc. Do not make it a habit to high-rez scans. TIPS: Whenever you are working on your computer, make it a habit to work from the desktop (= the screen you see when you start the computer.). Don t keep working with files on an external drive. WHY? Because large files take too long to work with on an external source. When you are done (or leaving the lab computer for the day), save all to your external drive or online storage space. 11
