4 IVP-3000 INTEGRATED VIDEO PROCESSOR IVP-3000, ALL IN ONE ADVANCED BROADCAST CONTRIBUTION SOLUTION IVP-3000 is Caton s broadcast level MPEG Transport Stream (TS) processing and streaming platform for contribution and distribution. It comprises 1RU 19 frame with 6 slots. By installing various modules, it could realize the following various applications: satellite and terrestrial signals receiving, H.264/MPEG-2 HD/SD video encoding and decoding, Conditional Access (CA) and BISS descrambling, program (re-) multiplexing, streaming over IP including reliable streaming via open Internet. 17 WHITE PAPER CATON R2TP & F2TP TECHNOLOGY CATON TECHNOLOGY BRINGS LIVE AND FILE TRANSMISSTION OVER OPEN INTERNET SOLUTION When it comes to live video transmission over open Internet, there are three most significant challenges for conventional transport protocol (UDP, TCP, and other TCP based protocol: RTMP, HTTP, FTP etc.), which are the primary reasons of QoS problem for video contribution over public network. Bandwidth: The bandwidth of uplink (first mile) and downlink (last mile) is usually not guaranteed in a typical Internet scenario. The traffic jam can be happened at any nodes between source and destination, which significantly decrease the Bandwidth Utility Ratio (BUR). For data transfer without time limitation, the transmission rate can be decreased to guarantee the quality, but it s not workable for real time video. Lower bit rate means lower quality. Jitter and Delay: Jitter is a normal phenomenon caused by network block up and buffering in routes. Differing from non-real time data, jitter will cause flaws on decoded pictures and sounds for a live network playing. Delay means the end-to-end delay about video transmitting, it is very important in live video streaming. Packet loss: Data packet error or lost will break the video quality. UDP can t handle the case by itself although it utilizes the bandwidth effectively. TCP can improve byte level correction but its BUR is poor, buffering cause higher latency and also higher jitter. QoS problem for live video transmission over open Internet is a composite of bandwidth available, quality, latency and jitter. In most cases, solution cannot be found to cover all the factors. However, the market need for a flexible, next generation live video and file transfer technology is pervasive and exploding as data sizes increase, network capacities grow, and users increasingly exchange data and media. R2TPis short for Reliable Real Time Transport Protocol. It s an IP based transport protocol especially designed to solve the QoS/QoE problems for live video transmission over Internet. It s a proprietary protocol owned by Caton Technology at patent pending. R2TP applies several innovative mechanisms to overcome the shortcomings of conventional TCP based protocol and guarantee the transport bandwidth for broadcast video contribution regardless of different public network condition. 1. R2TP makes use of the available bandwidth effectively. A creative congestion control technique is used to avoid the flaws caused by TCP and TCP like protocols. The return link is only used to transmit negative acknowledgements (NACK), that generates a very low overhead of return bandwidth. Also, the BUR of R2TP is distance independent, even if RTT increases sharply, the BUR of R2TP will be a stable value. 3. In some scenarios, the customers have multiple network links available, but any of them cannot meet the video streaming requirement, bandwidth is too low or not stable enough etc., R2TP implements a dynamic multi-path bounding method to satisfy those demands. By implementing an intelligent network load-balancing strategy, R2TP bounds multiple links into a virtual link, it balances the data traffic of each link dynamically depends on the network conditions. TCP s performance degrades dramatically with network distance and packet loss increase, While R2TP provides a guaranteed transmission bandwidth regardless of public network conditions With the great progress of live video transmission over R2TP technology, Caton Technology has also applied this core technology to the file transfer field as Fast File Transport Protocol (F2TP).
