No matter how many changes you make to your program, these files (Media Files) will not change. Only the way in which they are played back will change This principle is called Non Destructive Editing. When you edit your program the files appear to have changed. You can trim, adjust the light, colors etc. These instructions will be saved with your project. The project is a number of instructions on how the media files are to be played back. Then click OK and you will go to page 2 point 2. This is why you can change your instructions and why the Project and Media Files MUST be placed the same folder. Your Folder Project with editing instructions Unchanged original media files HBN 04.11

Existing clips will be moved to give room for the new clip and the length of the programme wiil be extended. Set In-point Set Out-point In Out The first clip you put into the Timeline may display this message: Sequence Settings doesn t match the clip setting, select Yes and FCE will change Sequences Setting to fit the clip. Video track locked Audio track locked TIP: If you hold down alt button (on the keyboard), you can trim Video or Audio tracks individually.
6 PAGE 10 Adjusting The Pictures PAGE 11 Adjusting The Audio 1 of 2 Place the Playhead over the clip in the Timeline so that it is visable in the Canvas. Double-cklik the clip in Timeline and it will also appear in the Viewer. Choose Effects > Video Filters > Color Correction > Color Corrector Final Cut initially has the audio in stereo, indicated by the green icons in the Timeline (Stereo Pair). To adjust CH1 or CH2 separately you have to change the audio to mono. Stereo Pair icon Changing the audio to mono: apple (cmd) + a = Select All Modify > Stereo Pair Before doing anything else, you need to center the audio: Modify > Audio > Pan Center A new tab named Color Corrector will appear in the Viewer. Select it! With this filter you can adjust color- and white-balance. The highlights (whites), shadows (blacks) and midtones (mids) can be adjusted with the sliders. Tab You can drag the color-balance button and adjust the color balance of the clip Color balance White balance If you press the White balance icon, and find something that should be white in Canvas, clik and the picture should have the correct colors. You can finetune with the colorwheel. Adjusting the audio level: 1.If you don t have a red line through the audiotrack (pic. 2) click on the icon in the lower left corner of the Timeline (pic. 1), then the red line will appear. 2. The level of each clip can be adjusted with your mouse by dragging the line up or down. The level for the whole length of the clip is adjusted. 1 2 Red line Whites Reset Midtone Blacks Saturation When adjusting exposure Mids give the strongest effect. Don t overdo it!! 3. You can adjust selected parts of a clip Choose Pen Tool, put one or more marks (Key Frames) on the red line and drag the Key Frame to create your adjustment. 3 Key Frame TIP: Don t overdo the corrections. The picture quality deteriorates quickly! TIP: Keyframes can be removed by dragging them outside of the clip. When adjusting color, reducing saturation may improve the picture.
7 PAGE 12 Adjusting The Audio 2 of 2 PAGE 13 Transition Effects (Picture And Sound) Finishing the audio track = easy listening It should be possible for the viewer to watch the finished program without having to use the remote control to regulate fluctuating audio levels. Video: Select the point between two clips by clicking the mouse. Choose Effects > Default - Cross Dissolve All important audio (speech) should be clearly understandable. Judge the mix of clean sound and speech. Judge the audio level from one clip to the next. Procedure: Find the first clip with important audio (= speech). Adjust the level to a -12 max reading on the meter. Go to the next clip. It should sound as loud as the previous clip. Listen carefully, compare and adjust. The meter reading is not important here. (the viewer doesn t have a meter - only ears!) Audio: Select the point between two clips by clicking the mouse. Choose Effects > Default - Cross Fade... Continue to the next clip - comparing the audio with the previous clip. --- and so on. Take care that speech is clearly audible when mixed with clean sound and/or music. Audio Level: -12 is the normal level for broadcast, -12 speech will vary between -18 and -6. Never let it go to or exceed 0. Cross Dissolve and Cross Fade in Timeline. Default time 25 frames (1 second) You can trim the length by dragging left or right at the icon on the track. You can lock the Video- or Audio-track, if you just want to trim one of them. TIP: You can "Mute" the video track = less distraction from the audio TIP: Video dissolves tend to slow down the tempo and kill the dynamics in short stories.
