Shattering Mirror Effect In this tutorial you will create an effect that simulates the shattering of a mirror, using the Import EPS feature in the 3D DVE layout. You ll also learn the difference between local and container mapping in the 3D DVE. 1 of 11
Capturing Media and Setting Up the Shot 1. Create a new sequence with these settings: Video Format: NTSC D1 4/3 Resolution: Full/Uncompressed Audio Sample Rate: 48 khz 2. Import the first two media files using the capturing settings shown here: ScreamingLady.mov GlassBreak.wav 3. Import the remaining two media files using the capturing settings shown here: MovingRock.mov RockReflection.mov 2 of 11
4. Drag the ScreamingLady clip to the timeline. 5. Create an overlay track and place the MovingRock clip on it. 6. Move the play cursor to the point where the rock hits the mirror (the rock is no longer motion-blurred). Right-click on the marker ribbon and choose Add Global Marker at Playback Position from the menu. The global marker will be used to synchronize the cracking of the mirror later on. 3 of 11
Compositing the Clips 1. Select the ScreamingLady clip and create a graphics container clip. 2. Ctrl-drag the RockReflection clip to the Effects Tree. The clip is added to the tree without creating a layer. 4 of 11
3. Create a simple composite using the Composite node (Tree Effects folder). Your tree should look like this: 4. On the top timeline, position the play cursor at the global marker and click Razor in the NLE Tools toolbar. This slices the graphics container clip in two. Later, you will apply a 3D DVE effect to the second part of the clip only. 5 of 11
Adding a 3D DVE to the Shot 1. Double-click on the second graphics container clip and add a 3D DVE node to the Effects Tree. Your tree should look like this: 2. Switch to the 3D DVE layout by double-clicking the 3D DVE node on the tree. 3. In the 3D DVE layout, make sure you re in Direct View mode and viewing through the main camera. If needed, reset the main camera on the Camera property editor. 4. With the play cursor still at the global marker, select Layer 1 in the 3D DVE Layers view. 6 of 11
Creating the Cracks in the Mirror 1. Import the Crack1.eps file which will be used to create one of the cracks in the mirror. 2. Position the bottom-right corner of the EPS shape at the middle of the rock. Tip: Click on the EPS shape (the white area) to move it. 3. Using the Rotate tool, move the anchor point to the point of impact. 7 of 11
4. Import the remaining EPS files and repeat steps 2 and 3 for each file. 5. Use the Shift key to multiselect the EPS shapes in the 3D DVE Layers view. 6. On the Surfaces property editor, set the following parameters: Type: Texture Texture: Input1 Mapping: Container This allows the texture to be applied according to the coordinates of the parent node. 8 of 11
Animating the Cracks 1. Set a keyframe by clicking the Animation Key icon. 2. Move forward two frames and turn on the Autokey mode by clicking auto. 3. With all the EPS shapes selected in the 3D DVE Layers view, change the X and Y Offset to a random value between -3 and 3. This offsets each shard to create the cracked mirror effect. 4. Turn off the Autokey mode. 9 of 11
Adding Depth to the Cracks 1. With all the EPS shapes still selected in the 3D DVE Layers view, switch to the Effects property editor and change the Extrude Depth to 3. This will create depth when you rotate the shards. 2. On the Surfaces property editor, set the following properties: Surface: Extrude Enable Surface: Selected Type: Texture Texture: Satin.tif This gives the edge a more realistic look than the default white color. 3. Select each shape individually and rotate them using the Rotate tool to make the bevel visible. 10 of 11
Processing the Effect 1. On the 3D DVE/Options property editor, select the Output tab, and set the Antialiasing to Medium. This setting smooths out the jagged edges of the shards. 2. Go back to the top timeline and process the effect. 3. Add the GlassBreak audio clip to the timeline, matching up the sound effect with the rock hitting the image. 4. Now play back the entire timeline Avid Technology, Inc. All rights reserved. Avid is a registered trademark of Avid Technology, Inc.
