Exploration of Video Over IP: Niche player or a replacement for SDI?

IP Revolution Reaches Playout Sara Kudrle

Introduction What is IP? What are benefits? Successful transitions? Challenges for other areas

What is IP? IP Internet Protocol IP = 1 layer of the OSI model OSI - Open Systems Interconnection IP identifies the network address of the device IP = Packet Based Technology

IP is not really new in the context of a TV station IP networking is widely used in any enterprise today Broadcasters have been exchanging files over IP for many years, either between facilities or within the same facility (NLEs, servers etc )

What are the benefits? Popularity and lower cost of IP Technical advantages: data capacity of Ethernet, easier implementation of redundancy etc Availability of trained staff

Other benefits of using an IP infrastructure Flexibility / routability: all sources are wrapped up and compatible with all destinations Truly redundant architecture Uses generic IP switches that are already in use in many facilities Leverages availability of IP-based monitoring solutions

Benefits of IP transition for cable / IPTV / satellite Cost savings: one box does it all (decode / proc / ad insertion / encode) Ease of redundancy. Leverages telecom networking gear already in place Scalability. Hundreds of channels are now typically processed in a cable / IPTV / satellite head-end Shares one common IP infrastructure for all services such as telephony, broadband internet etc

Will the revolution continue? Is IP technology growing? Are stations looking to cut costs? More signals and bigger signals? What about production?

SDI MUST DIE HERE IS HOW WE WILL DO IT Jan Weigner, Cinegy CEO

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Broadcasters today are looking for solutions to improve their Workflow efficiencies; enabling their facilities to break away from proprietary or hardwarebased systems which have become inefficient, outdated and expensive. Then there is also 4K For Broadcasters, an IP based Ethernet infrastructure is becoming an increasingly popular replacement to the traditional SDI-based infrastructure. IP infrastructures permit video data to be transported over Ethernet networks rather than via SDI switches and cables, and offer numerous advantages to broadcasters. IP infrastructures are scalable, provide greater signal capacity, are more flexible and far less costly to build and maintain but broadcasters need to be careful not to sacrifice any functionality they require in the change. This presentation highlights in detail how new, innovative and cost effective technologies used by world leading broadcasters remotely manage, monitor and adjust streams from satellites, camera feeds, playout devices and other sources with an IP based infrastructure.

GOAL Lower Staff Costs Simpler operations using ordinary IT eqipment Higher reliability using IT fail-over scenarios Staff cheaper and more easy available -> IT staff Ability for remote and cloud operations -> outsourcing operations and/or facilities Much lower OPEX

GOAL Lower Equipment Cost Simpler operations using ordinary IT equipment Signal transport via WAN / Internet Smaller footprint installtion less space, energy and heat Dynamically scalable operations Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

Remote Operations / Cloud Operations Real-time remote IP-based signal monitoring Notifications of incidents at the remote site Remote intervention e.g. re-routing IP signals, changing playlists, replacing / migrating resources etc. Automated failover / recovery GOAL

ALL-IN-IP Approach SOLUTION APPROACHES Build a completely IP-based broadcast facility Replace SDI wherever possible with IP HYBRID APPROACH Replace SDI with IP only where necessary Do a step-by-step migration towards IP

DVB Decoder Decoder Live Studio Multi - viewer c Encoder Encoder Encoder Stat Mux & CA DVB Microwave Live Signal Acquisition Decoder SDI Router Nielsen, etc. Dolby Broadcast Output DVB - T ATSC Fibre MPLS Decoder Ingest Playout GFX / Branding FTP, Signiant, Aspera, etc. Edit File Storage SDI IP TRADITIONAL SDI-BASED FACILITY

DVB Receiver Live Studio Capture Multiviewer StatMux & CA DVB Receiver Fibre Microwave MPLS Live Signal Acquisition Receiver Receiver RTP/UDP LAN Capture DATA LAN Encoder Nielsen, etc. Dolby GFX /Branding Playout Broadcast Output DVB-T ATSC FTP, Signiant, Aspera, etc. Edit File Storage SDI IP RTP IP-BASED FACILITY

BENEFITS OF IP-BASED FACILITIES 1. Avoidance of recompression (if source is compressed) 2. Lower infrastructure cost 3. Highly and quickly scalable infrastructure 4. Higher density much lower space requirements 5. Higher reliability 6. Easy to go lights-out / to do remotely manage 7. Pre-requisite for going virtual or cloud-based

WHAT S WRONG WITH SDI? Some of the Issues with SDI: SDI is an artefact of the analog age CVBS to SDI One cable per signal not scalable, expensive Dumb half duplex serial interface no return data No ability to transmit compressed video -> introducing recompression workflows Limited metadata (VANC/VBI) Not extensible, not future-proof Timing / sync problems

Lifecycle of Video Signal Types: CVBS (analog) coaxial 40+ years SDI IS NOT FUTURE-PROOF SD (270M) SDI coaxial 20+ years HD (1.5G) SDI coaxial <10 years HD (3G) SDI coaxial/optical - <5 years 4k (12G) SDI optical or 4x 3G? never? -> new router -> new router -> new router???

SDI IS NOT NEEDED TO CONNECT CAMERAS Sony NXL-IP55 IP-based camera interconnect with <1 frame delay > 4x HD via Gigabit Ethernet IP cameras are common in security environments 3G/LTE cameras IP-based vision mixers are coming this year 4k links will be HDMI 2.0 and IP SMPTE & AVB

SDI IS NOT MORE RELIABLE To have redundant signal paths with SDI is theoretically possible but most equipment only has no redundant interfaces so this means the entire equipment needs to be doubled. The price for redundant SDI signal paths doubles the amount of cables, routers and other equipment For most facilities the additional cost of total SDI redundancy is prohibitive Redundancy for IP-based signaling is comparatively cheaper and easy to implement.

SDI IS NOT MORE RELIABLE SDI is a protected point-to-point connection IP connections are usually multicast but can also be unicast which is point-to-point IP networks segments can be locked off by creating VLANs Software Defined Networks (SDN) offer a complete new level of flexibility in terms of adhoc network configuration IP can failover on packet level IP connections can be actively multi-path Equipment supporting IP usually has multiple Ethernet ports

SO WHY STILL USE SDI? Common answers: it is the status quo lowest common denominator the boxes we need all have SDI workflows without SDI are impossible! and so on
