1 OVERVIEW: Kaltura is a media (video, audio, images) hosting and creation application that is integrated into the Blackboard LMS. Kaltura allows students to easily create and share media wherever there is access to Blackboard s content editor in Blackboard via the Mashup tool. This includes the following areas for students: Assignment Submission Discussion Board Essay Questions on Tests Blogs, Journals and Wikis The following tutorial provides information on the following features of the Kaltura Media Mashup: 1. Uploading media to Kaltura and embedding using the content editor. 2. Creating video using the Kaltura Webcam and embedding using the content editor. (Jump down to this tutorial) HOW TO UPLOAD MEDIA USING THE KALTURA MEDIA MASHUP TOOL: 1. Log into Blackboard and access your course. Select the Discussion Board link on the course menu. 2. Locate and access the forum where you wish to add a video. 3. Click Create Thread or Reply. bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 1

2 4. Type in the subject for the message. If you are adding text, do so before adding the video. 5. Next, click the Mashups button to view the options. Select Kaltura Media. Page 2

3 6. Kaltura will open in a new window (make sure your pop-up blockers are disabled). In the upper right corner of the pop-up that appears, click on Add New and then on Webcam Recording. Tip: The Video Presentation and Screen Recording tools are not working at this time and should be avoided. 7. In the upper right corner of the pop-up that appears, click on Add New, then click on Media Upload. 8. Click on the Choose a file to upload button. bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 3

4 9. You can upload all common video (mp4, wav), audio (mp3, aux), and image files (jpeg, gif) to Kaltura. For this tutorial we will upload a video file. Navigate to where the video is saved on your computer and select the video, then click Open. 10. Enter a Name for the video. Optionally, add a Description and Tags (for future searching) and click Save. bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 4

5 11. Once your changes have been saved, click the Back to Browse and Embed link next to the Save button. 12. Click on the Select button to embed your video. Page 5

6 13. The video will now be embedded in your visual text editor. 14. Click Submit. Page 6

7 15. Your Thread has been posted. Click on the Thread name to view the post. Page 7

8 HOW TO CREATE & EMBED VIDEO USING THE KALTURA MEDIA WEBCAM: For this tutorial, we will be submitting a video to a Discussion Board Forum. You will need a Webcam for this tutorial. 1. Log into Blackboard and access your course. Select the Discussion Board link on the course menu. 2. Locate and access the forum where you wish to add a video. 3. 9 4. Type in the subject for the message. If you are adding text, do so before adding the video. 5. Next, click the Mashups button to view the options. Select Kaltura Media. Page 9

10 6. Kaltura will open in a new window (make sure your pop-up blockers are disabled). In the upper right corner of the pop-up that appears, click on Add New and then on Webcam Recording. 7. On the Adobe Flash Player Settings prompt, click Allow, then click Close. bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 10

11 8. Adjust the camera so that you are centered. Once you are satisfied, click anywhere to begin recording. 9. The recording time will show in the upper left corner of the video. When you are finished, click anywhere on the video to stop recording. 10. Once you have stopped the recording, you can choose to preview it by clicking Play( ). You can start a new video by clicking Record ( ). Once satisfied with the video, click Save. bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 11

12 11. Enter a video Name. Optionally, enter a Description and Tags (for future searching). You can display this information next to your video once it is embedded into your Discussion Forum thread. After you have entered the information, click Save. 12. Click Back to Browse and Embed. 13. Choose the video you wish to upload by clicking Select. bbsupport@cityu.edu Page 12

14 16. Your Thread with the embedded video has been posted for the class to view. Click on the Thread name to view the post. Page 14
