1 How-To Efficiently Create Section Groups in a Merged Bb Course Page 1 1. In the merged Parent course, click into the Full Grade Center. 2. From there, download a spreadsheet by clicking Work Offline > Download. 3. Download User Information Only and then click Submit 4. Confirm the download

You now have a list of all the students in the Parent course and can identify which Child section they came from using the Child Course ID column. Sort your spreadsheet by the Child Course ID column. 6. Finally, insert a column (A) at the beginning of your spreadsheet and call it Group Code. Save this file for use later. 7. Now, back in Blackboard, you need to create a Group Set for the Child sections of your merged course. Click on Groups in the Control Panel.

Type Child Section in the Name (you ll edit these later to be specific to each section code) and choose the Number of Child sections affiliated with your course. Do check off the Smart View for each group in set. Then click Submit. 10. Now rename each Group to better identify each of your Child sections and click Submit.

4 How-To Efficiently Create Section Groups in a Merged Bb Course Page On the back-end, Blackboard gives a special Group Code to each of the groups you just created. To get the Group Codes you must Export a.csv file of your groups. 12. Export Groups Only and do include a header row. 13. You will receive an (to your UVM ) once your.csv file is ready to be downloaded. Open the file using Excel. The first column shows a unique Group Code for each of the groups you ve created:

From your downloaded Groups.csv file, copy the Group Code for each Child section into the appropriate rows on your student information Excel sheet. For example, if Student A is in Child Section that meets on Wednesdays at 9:05am, I would copy the Group Code labeled Wednesday_gc_9:05am_gc_-gc_CRN into Group Code cell in Student A s row: 15. Because your student information Excel sheet is already sorted by Child Course ID, you can copy the course code once and paste it into all the Group Code cells with the affiliated Child Course ID. BE CAUTIOUS USING THE DRAG THE + AUTOFILL FEATURE IN EXCEL TO COPY FROM ONE CELL TO THE OTHERS, AS, EXCEL MAY INCREMENTALLY INCREASE THE LAST DIGIT OR LETTER BY 1 WITH EACH CELL. At this point, it probably makes sense to save this file for your records. 16. Now, to import this file into Blackboard, you must reduce the file to have only two columns: Group Code and Username. And those two columns must be in that order (Group Code 1 st, Username 2 nd ). So, delete all columns EXCEPT Group Code and Username. 17. Use the Save As option and call this 2-column file something distinct. Make sure you save this file as a.csv file extension and you know where on your computer you ve saved it. If you see this message, say Yes :

Click Browse My Computer under Import Group Members : 20. Attach the.csv file you just saved with your student information and Group Code column. Then click Submit. 21. You will see an confirming that your import was successful. To double-check group membership, from the Groups page, you can see how many students are enrolled in each group: 22. You can also Edit any group (click the gray down-pointing chevron next to the Group Name when you hover) to see the members (members are listed at the bottom of the page). There are also other editing options. For instance, you can make the groups unavailable to students (if you only need them for grading purposes.)

7 How-To Efficiently Create Section Groups in a Merged Bb Course Page You can use these groups in several ways: Create a Favorite link in your Grade Center to quickly view a single group: You may wish to rename these Smart Views to be more descriptive (unfortunately, they will not reflect edited names you gave your child course groups). To do so, in the Full Grade Center, click on Manage > Smart Views. Then hover over the name of the group you want to change, click the gray dropdown arrow, and choose Edit.
