1 RESIDENCE PERMIT A Guide on how to apply for a Temporary Residence Permit as a Student. WARNING! NOT APPLICABLE TO UE Citizens (a different procedure)

2 The Residence Permit is a legal act and a legal procedure. The Residence Card is the document you get when you finish the procedure. Is THIS the right one for you? If not, maybe you can (or should) apply for a different one, i.e.: Registration of Stay for EU Citizens; Permanent Residence Permit for Pole s Card (Karta Polaka) holders; Temporary Residence Permit for Graduates (with a Polish diploma); Temporary Residence Permit for Work purposes? The topic of this file is NONE of the above. There are just minor similarities. It is temporary residence permit for students from outside the EU/EFTA

3 PASSPORT OFFICE WEBSITE GET MORE BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR YOUR VISIT Choose the FOREIGNERS tab, and then choose the second available option (LEGALIZATION) from the menu. Keep choosing the first option (TEMPORARY / SCIENCE) until text shows up. Check the list of documents. Note the automatic G-translation switch at the top of the page (ca. 100 languages available)

4 PASSPORT OFFICE ONLINE BOOKING ENTER THE WEBSITE AND BOOK YOUR APPOINTMENT. BE AWARE THAT THE FIRST FREE TIME SLOT CAN BE A MONTH AWAY FROM NOW* AT TIMES, ALL SLOTS ARE TAKEN. IF SO, YOU CAN APPLY ANYWAY BUT WITHOUT INSTANT CHECK (DESK NO.9) (*) on the last day of each month, you can see time slots appear for the month after the next one

10 OTHER DOCUMENTS ATTACHED FINANCIAL RESOURCES You need about PLN (EUR 2400) on your account. Neighbour countries: 15x635 = = 9725 PLN. Other countries (non-eu): 15x635 = =12025 PLN. OR: you need an official proof of who your sponsor is [the Office may question if there is a different name on transfer form]. Give precise personal details, duration and amounts. OR: if you are given a scholarship, show a certificate from the awarding institution (amount, period).

11 FINANCIAL RESOURCES The BANK PROOF is to contain STAMPS and SIGNATURES of your bank. It should tell the AMOUNT (Polish: saldo), CURRENCY (Polish: waluta) And YOUR personal DATA. It needs to be up-to-date (i.e. issued not earlier than 3 months ago)

12 GET STUDY CERTIFICATE* FROM YOUR UL FACULTY WITH PAYABLE STUDIES, ALSO ADD A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR STUDY AGREEMENT WITH UL + TUITION PAYMENT PROOF FROM BANK. (*) it needs to be up-to-date, or issued in the present month

13 PREPARE* RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE (if you want your address on Residence Card) This is compulsory for niestacjonarne (evening / weekend) students (PL) dowód zameldowania ASK YOUR DORM S RECEPTION (IF IN DORM) OR LANDLORD (IF IN FLAT) FOR A RESIDENCE FORM 1. Are your studies regular = daytime, full-time? You do not need to provide this document. You can ask for a blank-address card.** IF IN FLAT, ATTACH A COPY OF TENANCY CONTRACT. YOU CAN APPLY BEFORE GIVING RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE. IF SO, GET IT TO THE OFFICE AS SOON AS YOU CAN GET IT. (A RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE IS NEEDED TO ISSUE YOUR CARD) (*) proceed in advance (a month before visa ends), or you won t get it right away, and a different procedure will apply (**) even in such a case, the Office may require you to provide at least the certificate shown in Figure 1

14 PREPARE INSURANCE CERTIFICATE (RU) страховка (TR) sigorta (PL) ubezpieczenie It should say the amount of treatment costs it covers and that it is valid in Poland If insured at Polish Health Fund (NFZ) : prepare original+ photocopy of main document + latest payment proof (please do not confuse it with a registration form)

15 CERTIFIED TRANSLATIONS OF DOCUMENTS NOTE: if some of the required documents you have are not in Polish, then this is a formal obstacle. WHY: According to the Polish law, each document issued in other language than Polish should be translated by a sworn translator (Polish: tłumacz przysięgły) in order to be a formal proof in your case. Because the only official language is Polish. WHAT TO DO: visit a certified (=sworn) translator and order a certified translation into Polish. 16 TIP: make an extra photocopy of first page of your form. You may ask for an extra proof from the Office. This is especially important if you go there without booking online first. GO!!! OPENING HOURS Mon; Thu-Fri 8:30 14:30 Tue 10:00 17:00 Wed: closed

17 FIND THE RIGHT ROOM OR COUNTER.. AND GET READY FOR A LONG QUEUE.. AND FINGERPRINT SCANNING (actually, they take a fingerprint of a single digit of each hand)

18 YOUR DUTIES: Keep all letters, receipts, or stamped sheets that you receive from the Office. Check the physical mailbox (letterbox) where you live (and put in the form). If you ignore a letter for 14 days, the Office assumes you read and agreed! Keep and check the Polish mobile number you put in the form. The Office may send you text messages. If you receive a letter poster from the Office, keep the envelope and/or receipt. It proves the date when you collected the letter. TIPS: ASK the office staff to give you a stamp in the passport right away. You have the right to get it instantly if your application is complete. If your file is not complete, the staff may deny you a stamp. Figure out what is missing or wait 2-3 weeks for feedback. Return ASAP. PAY ATTENTION to office name, date stamp, officer s name stamp, and the evidence number such as SO-IV.6151.NUMBER (if available). These identify your case files. Make extra photocopies of what you submit (maybe ask staff to confirm on them) and ones that you receive.

19 THE FOLLOW-UP OF YOUR VISIT: RESIDENCE CARD If your form and the set of documents are OK, you will soon (up to 4-5 months) receive your Residence Card (Polish: Karta Pobytu). Book your visit online (odbiór dokumentów collection section). Good for you!!! If your application is incomplete, you will receive summons (wezwanie) in 2-3 weeks to provide missing documents. Check the mailbox, phone & really often! Collect your Karta Pobytu as soon as it is ready. With it, you have no obstacles for travelling (Schengen zone), or taking up work (if available to you). If your Karta Pobytu (or application) is still processed, ask for a stamp in your passport. Before your Karta Pobytu is ready, stay and wait in Poland - don t travel abroad*. Still, the stamp can be basic documentation for your school and/or job. (*) unless you go back home for good (the stamp allows for leaving Poland but not for entering again); This does not, however, invalidate your visas: you may still travel within the scope defined for your valid visa.
