Chapter 1 What Is Mobile Services? Mobile Services for Domino allows all your Notes desktops and Web browsers to communicate directly with one- and two-way wireless devices worldwide. Notes users can access their , calendar and public Domino directories from their cellular phone, interactive pager or other mobile device, via a wireless service provider. You can also extend your Domino applications to be used by wireless devices (for example, alerts or dispatches, or interactive, two-way communication). How Mobile Services for Domino works Mobile Services for Domino provides an easily manageable central administrative interface to one or more wireless data services and mobile devices. It is integrated with Domino s messaging and routing services. It functions as a foreign Domino mail domain, and routes messages to and from pagers, cellular phones and other mobile devices that support oneand two-way messaging. Mobile Services for Domino also works with mobile devices that support the latest generation of microbrowsers. As a Domino HTTP server-based application, it acts as a proxy for handling communications between Domino servers and mobile devices. Mobile Services for Domino accepts requests, and returns responses from Domino servers to the mobile device via the wireless service provider. When you install Mobile Services for Domino, you can optionally create a Web site that enables employees, customers, suppliers and other business partners to send messages to mobile devices and receive replies, without using a Notes client. For example, a customer can use a Web browser to compose a message, and send it to recipients selected from a list of Mobile Services for Domino users in your organization. 1
Mobile Services for Domino features Wireless data protocol support Mobile Services for Domino supports a broad range of industry standard protocols for connecting to the world s most popular wireless data services, such as: External Machine Interface (EMI - UCP) protocol Telocator Alphanumeric Paging (TAP ) protocol Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Simple Network Paging Protocol (SNPP) IETF RFC 1861 Short Message Peer to Peer protocol (SMPP) It also supports dial-up, X.25, and TCP/IP-based connectivity. Network support Mobile Services for Domino works with all major cellular phone networks (GSM, TDMA, CDMA, iden, etc.), as well as all major paging and wireless packet data networks, such as: Flex/ReFlex, Mobitex, DataPac, ERMES, CDPD. Mobile device support Your users can use any mobile device, regardless of the operating system, hardware platform or wireless network involved from simple one-way pagers to handheld PCs, if the wireless device supports one of the major wireless messaging standards. Centralized administration Mobile Services for Domino provides centralized administration to configure the server, modems, and users; and to record events and manage all the wireless services to which your organization subscribes. Unified installation Mobile Services includes two components: Messaging Services and Wireless Domino Access. Messaging Services allows users to send messages to a pager or other mobile device. Wireless Domino Access allows users to use a microbrowser to send and receive messages directly from their mailbox on the Domino server. Mobile Services for Domino allows you to easily set up either Messaging Services and/or Wireless Domino Access (WDA) using the same installation program. Application options You can add your own unique mobile applications directly to those already provided by Mobile Services for Domino ( , calendar, and directory). 2 Mobile Services for Domino 1.1 Getting Started Guide
End user support Users navigate a series of menus to request Domino-based information. They can compose and send a message to any mobile device without knowing its Personal Identification Number (PIN) or wireless data service. Mobile Services for Domino transparently converts the message format, connects to the wireless service and sends the message. Mobile device users can configure Mobile Services for Domino to remove unneeded components of incoming messages, apply abbreviations to incoming text, and specify days and times when they can be reached via their mobile device. Users can also set up automatic replies to incoming messages on their behalf when they are not available. Users whose devices include microbrowsers can: View their Notes in-boxes Search for messages by date, sender or subject Read, forward, compose and send or fax mail View their daily calendar; send schedules to fax machines Create new calendar entries Search the Domino directory and use the information to automatically dial the phone or populate the To field in an outgoing Extranet access Mobile Services for Domino comes with a Domino-based Web site that people without Notes clients inside or outside your organization can use to contact appropriate mobile users. What is Messaging Services? Messaging Services enables Notes and Domino users and applications to send and receive messages to interactive mobile and wireless data devices as easily as sending and receiving electronic mail messages. It serves as a foreign Domino mail domain so that messages can be routed to and from pagers, cellular phones and other mobile devices that support one-way and two-way messaging. It converts the messages automatically into the appropriate protocols so that they can be viewed by a Domino client, Web browser, or mobile device. With Messaging Services, Notes users can: Send messages directly to a mobile device from Notes mail or any Notes/Domino application Control the length and formatting of messages received on a mobile device Chapter 1: What Is Mobile Services? 3
Receive data that exceeds the device limitations Receive reports on the status of messages Address and send messages to a mobile device s personal identification number (PIN) or the device owner s name. What is Wireless Domino Access? Wireless Domino Access (WDA) runs on a Domino server and acts as a proxy for handling communications between Domino servers and smart phones or other wireless devices. WDA running on a Domino server accepts requests from mobile devices, via the wireless IP service provider, then returns responses, via the wireless service provider, to mobile devices. WDA translates requests from the mobile device s Web browser format into a format that Domino can handle. WDA then accesses Domino databases in a corporate network, using Domino application programming interface (API) calls. Domino returns responses to WDA, which then translates the responses in a format that the wireless service provider can transmit back to the mobile device. To successfully process all requests and responses, WDA must be configured with Manager access to the Domino databases that users access. For example, if users want to delete entries in their mail databases using their mobile devices, then the WDA server must have Manager access with Delete privileges in those mail databases. Wireless Domino Access (WDA) supports wireless access to Domino/Notes databases, via a number of wireless data service providers around the world such as AT&T PocketNet Services, so that users can perform the following actions from their mobile and wireless devices. In Notes Mail View the entire Inbox or just the unread messages in the Inbox Create new mail messages Search for messages by sender, subject, and date Read messages Reply to messages Send messages to a fax machine for printing Delete messages Forward messages 4 Mobile Services for Domino 1.1 Getting Started Guide
In the Notes calendar View calendar entries Send today s entries to a fax machine for printing Go to calendar entries for a specified date Create new calendar entries In the Public Domino Directories/Domino Directory/Address Book Look up a person s work information by first and last name Send messages to a person directly from the Domino Directory/Address Book Call a person directly from the Domino Directory/Address Book In the main menu Use the Switch ID feature to share a mobile device Select up to six additional third party applications that can be added to the WDA menu Security WDA uses a number of security features to ensure secure access to data being accessed: Domino HTTP user names and passwords authenticate users A Trusted Device document allows administrators to enable/disable specific devices Trusted IP addresses allow administrators to enable/disable specific IP addresses allowed to submit requests to the WDA service Allows the Administrator to add Trusted IP documents and set the overall IP status and the status for individual trusted IPs. Overall Status is controlled by the action buttons Enable All, Disable All, or Enable the individual Trusted IP Address. Individual IP addresses are controlled by the Enabled radio buttons in a Trusted IP Address document. Chapter 1: What Is Mobile Services? 5

Testing Messaging Services After you have configured Messaging Services, you need to test the configuration by sending a message to a mobile device and monitoring it. 1. Start Messaging Services by typing: LOAD MSDMS at the Domino server console. 2. Start the Notes client and create an message. 3. Address the message to the appropriate device as follows: @AcmePage@mobile 4. Send the message. You can monitor the status screen to see that Messaging Services is routing the message, or check the Event Log to make sure that the message was received. Setting up Wireless Domino Access If you chose Wireless Domino Access while installing Mobile Services for Domino (MSD), you must do the following: 1. Make sure the Domino server and the HTTP task are running on the MSD server. 2. Add the MSD Server to the ACL of each MSD user s Notes Mail Database, with Manager level access. If desired, you can also include the ability to delete documents. Chapter 3: How to Set Up Mobile Services for Domino 13
3. If the Domino Domain being used for MSD is different than the domain where MSD Users mail resides, then the MSD Server will need to be cross-certified with other Domino Domain(s). Note Check the default access to the Web Server log database to ensure that access to this database is limited. Default access should be set to No Access. This is a security feature to ensure that HTTP passwords are hidden. Setting up a Microbrowser to access an MSD Server After you have installed Mobile Services and set up Wireless Domino Access on the Domino server, you must create a bookmark in the microbrowser used on your mobile device. 1. Bookmarks can be created from the device or from a personal Web page, depending on the device and wireless service used. Refer to the Service Provider s documentation on how to create bookmarks for the specific device and service. 2. Enter the MSD/WDA server URL using the following format: For example, where Server1.acme.com is the DNS name for the MSD/WDA server. You must enter the port number only if it differs from the default port setting, which is 80. Please refer to the TCP/IP port number in the Server document for the WDA server. 14 Mobile Services for Domino 1.1 Getting Started Guide
