4 Purpose Last Updated 7/12/2014 SVSU requires password changes twice per year in response to pressures from security focused legislation (GLBA, Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI, etc.) and auditors. Many universities require password changes on a regular basis, multiple times a year. SVSU is no exception. Procedure When you get the following message, it is time for you to change your password: Following SVSU's new password policy, your password will expire on: mm/dd/yyyy. Please change your password today. Please go to the SVSU home page, click on the "Quick Links," and click on "Change Network Password." We do not provide the links here so that you know this is not a phishing attempt to obtain your password. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or the validity of this , please contact the Support Center at: or (toll free) NOTE You cannot reuse your last 3 passwords. All password self service functions are accessible either by using the Change Network Password link under Quicklinks on the main SVSU web site or in the mysvsu portal by using the Change Password option in the Applications list. In order to use the Reset Password option, you must first set your: a) security questions/answers, b) mobile phone number, c) address, or d) Google Authenticator. FAQ Need to change your password and know your current password? If you know your username and current password, you may change your password by selecting the Change Your Current Password option, logging in and utilizing the functionality on the Change Password tab. 5 Need to change your password and don t know your current password? You may reset a forgotten password, by selecting the "Change Your Current Password" option, selecting Reset Password, entering your username, then either a) choosing to have a reset verification code sent to an address or mobile number on file, and entering once received or b) answering your 3 security questions correctly. Need to change your password, don t know your current password and were unsuccessful using the Reset Password option? If you need to change your password and are unsuccessful utilizing the Reset Password functions, you may contact the IT Services Support Center in-person or via phone. If you can provide proper ID verification information, your password will be reset and a new password provided. You can then utilize the "Change Your Current Password" option. Need to set/change security questions/answers for password reset usage? If you know your username and current password, you can set/change your 3 challenge questions and answers by selecting the Change Your Current Password option, logging in, selecting the Enrollment tab and utilizing the functionality on the Security Questions tab. Need to set/change mobile phone number and/or address for password reset usage? If you know your username and current password, you can change your mobile phone number and/or address to receive password reset notifications by selecting the Change Your Current Password option, logging in, selecting the Enrollment tab, selecting and utilizing the functionality on the Verification Code tab. NOTE the mobile phone number must be entered in the format 1-AAA or 1AAA , where AAA is the area code. Need to setup Google Authenticator for password reset usage? If you know your username and current password, you can setup Google Authenticator for password resets by selecting the Change Your Current Password option, logging in, selecting and utilizing the functionality on the Google Authenticator tab. Need to perform first time activation of your account? Prior to logging in for the first time to any SVSU technology service, you must activate your account by selecting the Activate New Account option, logging in with your assigned username & default password (last 7 digits of SVSU ID number and six digit birthdate, ex ), and completing a password change. Please be sure to also set your: a) security questions/answers, b) mobile phone number, c) address, or d) Google Authenticator, so you can use the password reset functionality. Don t know your SVSU username or SVSU ID number? Usernames typically consist of the first and middle initials, plus the first six characters of the last name. 6 digits of the ID number printed on SVSU s TheCard. The ID number is also available online in the Self Service section of the mysvsu portal via the Student/Academic Profile/My Profile option. Student: Students are initially provided their SVSU username and SVSU ID number via a mailed Admission/Technology Access letter or message either from Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, College of Education Admissions and Certification Office (admission letter), or the Registrar's Office (re-admits) or at orientation time from the Office of International Programs. Students who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by one of the following methods: o (Username only) Having another admitted or registered student login to the Search for Students option of the online SVSU directory and search for their name. The username is the part of the address preceding o (Username and ID Number) Bringing picture ID to the Registrar's Office, Campus Financial Services Center, Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, the College of Education Admissions and Certification Office, the Office of International Programs, the SVSU off-campus administration office where they are enrolled or the IT Services Support Center. o (Username and ID Number) Calling Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, or the College of Education Admissions and Certification Office to have their username and ID number r ed/ ed to them. o (Username only) Calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information. Employee: "Employee" refers to any individual who is employed by SVSU in a capacity other than student employment. Employees are normally provided their SVSU username and SVSU ID number by the Human Resources Office during orientation. Adjunct faculty are initially provided such via a mailed Technology Access letter or message from the Office Adjunct Faculty Support Programs. Employees who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by one of the following methods: o (Username only) Utilizing the "Search for Faculty/Staff" option of the online SVSU directory to search for their name. 7 IT Services Support Center. Adjunct Faculty may also bring picture ID to the Office of Adjunct Faculty Support Programs. o (Username and ID Number; Adjunct Faculty only) Calling the Office of Adjunct Faculty Support Programs to have their username and ID number r ed/ ed to them. o (Username and ID Number) Calling the Human Resources Office to have their username and ID number mailed/ ed to them. o (Username only) Calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information. Non-SVSU Employee: "Non-SVSU employee" refers to any individual whose association with the university entitles them to have access to certain technology services, such as Dining Services and Bookstore employees. Non-SVSU employees are provided their SVSU username and SVSU ID number by IT Services via phone or after submission and processing of an IT Services Technology Access Special Request Form. Non-SVSU employees who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information. Retiree: Retirees usernames and ID numbers should be the same as when they were employed at SVSU. Retirees who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by calling the IT Services Support Center and providing ID verification information. Alumni: Alumni are initially provided their SVSU username and SVSU ID number as a student, unless they did not have such when the alumni was a student. In that case, they need to contact the Alumni Relations Office to have their account created. Alumni who do not know their SVSU username or SVSU ID number, may obtain such by one of the following methods: o (Username and ID Number) Calling the Alumni Relations Office and providing ID verification. o (Username and ID Number) Bringing picture ID to the Registrar's Office, Campus Financial Services Center, Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, the College of Education Admissions and Certification Office, the Office of International Programs, the SVSU off-campus administration office where they were enrolled or the IT Services Support Center.
