1 Detailed instructions for adding (or changing) your Avatar (profile picture next to your name) on Ustream (disclaimer this is how it works for me using Internet Explorer it may look slightly different if you are using another browser) Step 1: First, you need to already have a picture that you want to use for your Avatar. The filename should end with.jpg or.gif. Some people have had trouble with some.gif files, so best advice is try another file, if the one you are trying isn t working. The picture should be stored on your own PC, and should not be one that is, or may be copyrighted by someone else. Screen captures made from the Decorah nest seem to be okay to use for personal (non commercial) use see the RRP policy here: Picture size: the actual size of little picture you see by your name when chatting is 48x48 pixels, the one you see when you look in your profile is 90x90 pixels. That s pretty darn small. Having said that. Ustream will resize for you (thank goodness!). I looked all over Ustream to find guidelines, and didn t find much if anything. It looks like its best if the file size in bytes is less than 1MB. Some people have had trouble with certain pics, so if you do, my best advice is try another one. (I know, not much help lol) Note about Copyrights: It is a very complicated subject, but here is my best quick and dirty summary and understanding (but don t quote me!). Every picture, document, etc produced is automatically copyrighted to the person who created it. So basically everything is copyrighted. The question really is, do you have rights to use it? For our purposes, the RRP license info looks like it says that it is okay for personal use, as does Ustream s terms of use. So a screen capture is probably fine, as long as you don t make any money with it (non commercial use). Any photo taken by anyone belongs to them, and you will need their permission to use it, even if it is posted on the Internet somewhere. It really doesn t matter where you find it, places like Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr, Google images. None of that takes away the original creator s rights to determine how it is used. This document for instance is copyrighted to me, but I probably can t sell it either, because it uses screen captures from Ustream (not that I am planning to sell it just an example). And of course, I do give everyone permission to share it with each other, just don t sell it LOL. (steps cont d next page)

2 Step 2: while logged into ustream. Hover your mouse over your name at the top of the screen, just to the left of the yellow Go Live button (see green arrow in pic below) When you hover over your name, it should open a menu that looks like this:

3 Step 3: click the Go to Profile Page option This will open a page that looks like this: Click the Edit Profile button (see green arrow), which will bring up page to fill in your profile information and looks like the one below: (I changed my to a dummy one for this exercise) The top half of the screen looks like this (first pic below) you must fill in ALL the fields (although of course use your own judgment about your privacy in how you fill out the details). Once you get to the bottom part of filling in your profile fields, etc, info you will see a box to add your picture. It looks like this (see green arrow again second pic below)

5 Step 4: click the Browse button and navigate to the folder on your computer and select the picture that you want to use for your Avatar. The window that opens will be showing you the files and folders on your own PC. Find your picture and click it. Its name (including the path) should then be shown in the box to the left of the browse button. Once that is filled in, be sure to click the SAVE button a little bit farther down. If it doesn t work, it may be that your picture is too large, or you may simply need to browse to the picture and click SAVE again. Some people find that no matter what they do it doesn t take and I have seen when Googling that for some people they just need to try another browser, no idea why, but sometimes that helps.
