2 Twitter Twitter is a messaging service that lets you post public messages called tweets. These can be up to 140 characters long. As well as tweets, you can send private messages and post pictures/videos. Brands, companies and celebrities can also have Twitter accounts. 1: Click your profile image to reveal a menu. From here you can choose Settings and Privacy. 2: From here you can select Privacy and Safety. 3: On the left the settings have been selected for the safest viewing and interactions with Twitter.

3 Facebook A fantastic tool for organising events or sharing activities with others, but it is very easy to over share and leave yourself vulnerable. 1: Log in and find the account settings menu to find all the privacy and safety settings. 2: Do not join a Facebook Network. By default it opens your account to anyone else in the same Network that can be created by anyone. The existing Granville Sports College network has nothing to do with school. You can leave a network on the General page of the settings menu. 3: Make sure on the Privacy page, all options are set to Friends Only and that the account is not searchable by search engines. (To avoid your details appearing on Google searches). This also secures your account against friends who have weaker security settings. 4: On Timeline and tagging page change everything to Friends Only or Off. This stops non-friends from being able to post to your page and if you wish, you can review any posts so they only appear if you allow it. 5: If there are any concerns, all posts have the option in the top left to Block and Report content.

4 Snapchat Snapchat is an app that lets you send a photo, short video or message to your contacts. The snap appears on screen for up to 10 seconds before disappearing, although it can be screenshotted. There s also a feature called Snapchat Story that lets you share snaps in a sequence for up to 24 hours. 1: The danger is that any photo sent can be saved and kept. Which can then be re-posted and shared online. 2: You can t control what you see and there are no filters for content. 3: Snapchat has settings set up to Contacts Only for the most part, so is quite secure assuming all Contacts in the users phone are safe and appropriate! 4: It is easy to become addicted to the Snapchat Story to keep the streak going and vulnerable people could be persuade to overshare to keep their high score. 5: Photos or videos containing any details of school, street or home can easily give away your location.

5 Instagram Instagram is a picture and video sharing app. Users can post content and use hashtags to share experiences, thoughts or memories with an online community. You can follow your friends, family, celebrities and even companies on Instagram. Instagram allows live streaming. 1: Photos or videos containing any details of school, street or home can easily give away your location. 2: It is easy for strangers to follow your account if you haven t set the account to Private. 3: Instagram has the worst record for cyberbullying with many photos being screenshotted and re-shared without permission.

6 Musical.ly Musical.ly allows you to create, share and discover short videos. You can share videos with friends or with other Musical.ly users. 1: The privacy settings on Musical.ly can be difficult to find and aren t very strong, so it is still possible for strangers to view your account. 2: It is difficult to report issues and block other users. 3: Apps exist that allow others to download your Musical.ly videos. 4: The app encourages recording and sharing video of yourself publically to gain fans which is inviting trouble.

7 Kik (Rated 17 in some other countries) Kik is an instant messaging app. It lets you create your own username and message others without using your mobile number. You can share photos, organise events, share games, news and anything of interest to you from the internet. 1: Kik doesn t require many details to create an account and your username could be anything which helps you stay anonymous to others. 2: This also means that everyone else is anonymous. 3: There are not many privacy settings and once someone has your username it s difficult to stop them sending messages because if you block them, they can create a new username.

8 WhatsApp WhatsApp is an instant messaging app which lets you send messages, images and videos to friends. You can have one to one and group conversations. 1: Anyone can add someone to a group chat, but you can always leave it whenever you want. 2: Most chats set up will only be between contacts on the user s phone so assuming those are appropriate then it is reasonably secure. 3: Group chats can have up to 100 users but could include anyone and there is no way to know what the content of the chat is before loading it.
