1 Guide to Family Access and Student Access For Parents/Guardians and Students Family Access and Student Access are two modules that allow parents/guardians and students to view and sometimes edit student information stored in the Skyward student information system. Family Access is used by parents and guardians and Student Access is used by students. These modules allow family members to be more involved in students education and improve communication with schools. This Guide shows parents/guardians and students how to log in and use the different applications in the system. A computer is needed to connect to the link to Family and Student Access on the Renton School District Website ( This Guide will be more helpful if you have logged into Family and Student Access and can follow along with the instructions and explanations. The following features are available. They are described in more detail in the following pages. FEATURE PAGE COMMENTS Getting Started 2 Logging in, navigating screens, selecting students/schools, making changes. Attendance 4 View student s tardy and absence information in either a list or calendar format. Calendar 6 View absence and tardy information in a calendar form; view any notes added by a teacher. District Links 6 Links provided to access other websites, including the district home page and links to school and teacher websites. Notifications 6 Parent/guardian can indicate when he/she wants want to receive notifications. Attendance 7 sent if there is an attendance issue for the day. Food Service 7 sent when balance falls below a specific dollar amount. Health Information 7 View the student s vaccination history and compliance status. Food Service 7 View Food Service Payor and Customer account information, including lunch type (e.g., paid, free, or reduced), total payments, and purchases; make payments online using a credit card. Log In History 8 View the time and date of each login to Family/Student Access; students cannot see the parent s history and parents cannot see the student s login history. Report Cards 8 View report cards posted by the district. Student Information 8 View essential student and family information; parent/guardian can request the school to make changes. Family Information 8 Name, address, phone numbers, s for parents/guardians. Emergency Information 9 Emergency contact information (name, relationship, , phone). Test Scores 9 View scores on state tests (e.g., MSP, HSPE, WASL); does not show tests and quizzes related to a specific class or some district tests. ~ 1 ~

2 1. Getting Started Logging In To log into Family and Student Access, type the URL ( into the address bar of any compatible Web browser. The Family and Student Access login page will appear: On the Family and Student Access login page, type the login and password provided to you by the school and click Login. If you do not have or do not remember your login and/or password, please contact your school. If you have provided your address to the school but do not remember your login or password, you can retrieve them using the following steps: 1. Click the Forgot your login or password? hyperlink on the Login page. 2. Type your address and click Submit. If the system successfully identifies you, a confirmation page appears and an containing your login and password is sent to the address on file. If the system can t identify you, contact the school office to obtain the needed information. To log out of Family and Student Access, click Logout in the upper-right corner. ~ 2 ~

3 Navigating Screens The Family and Student Access screen is divided into three portions. The left side of the screen contains hyperlinks that allow you to access the different applications made available to you by the district. You will find detailed information about each section in this Guide. To access a particular section, simply click the name of the section on the left side of the screen. The top portion of the screen contains the student s name, school, and buttons that allow you to view or change your account information, print, and logout. The main part of the screen displays information based on the section you have selected. NOTE: Some example screen views shown in this guide may include sections that are not in use. Selecting a Student and School Parents/guardians who have more than one student in the district can choose each student using the Student drop-down menu. Student users do not have this drop-down menu because they are not allowed to view information about their siblings. Students who are enrolled in more than one school can choose between the schools using the school drop-down menu. Making Changes You can change your login, password, and/or address. If you are the Primary Guardian of a Family, you may also be able to change the addresses of other Guardians within your Family. To manage your account information, click Account Info. To change your login: click Change [Your Name] s Login, then type your new login and your current password. Then click Save. To change your Password: click Change [Name] s Password. Then type your new password, and retype it for confirmation. Type your current password and then click Save. To change an address: Click Change [Name] s and type the new address and click Save. ~ 3 ~

4 2. Attendance The Attendance section allows you to view a student s tardies and absences (excused and unexcused) in either a calendar or list format. You can also view a student s term attendance totals. (The Absence Notifications and Contact Us functions shown in the example are not in use at this time.) The Calendar tab displays the student s attendance data in a calendar format. The colors (green, yellow, blue, pink) indicate that attendance information is available for that day. Click the date number to view detailed attendance information for that day. The By Day tab shows the student s attendance data in a list format. All days in which a student has attendance data are listed chronologically. Attendance information is broken down by period. Refer to the Attendance Codes and Attendance Reason legends at the bottom of the page for descriptions of the codes and reasons. ~ 4 ~

5 The Term Totals tab displays the student s statistical attendance data broken down by term. ~ 5 ~

6 3. Calendar The Calendar allows you to view absences, tardies, and Non-School Days in a calendar format. To change the month in the Calendar, click Previous Month or Next Month. If there are items on a date, the date number is a hyperlink. Click the date number to view details of all the items on that date. You may be able to click an item with a hyperlink to view details about that specific item. 4. District Links These are hyperlinks that direct you to other websites. There are links to the Renton School District home page ( a list of schools ( and a link to teacher websites ( 5. Notifications Parents/guardians can sign up to be notified when certain situations occur. This application is not available to student users. To subscribe to be notified, click the Change My Notifications button, select the options, then click Save. NOTE: You must have a valid address to receive notifications. See the Getting Started: Making Changes section for details about updating your address. ~ 6 ~

7 Attendance: When checked, this notification is sent if a student has any attendance record entered for that day. Food Service: When checked, this notification is sent when a student s Food Service balance falls below $ Health Information This section allows you to view the student s vaccination history and compliance status for all staterequired vaccinations. 7. Food Service This section allows you to view Food Service Payor and Customer account information. The Account tab displays a summary of the student s Food Service account. This includes the lunch type (e.g., paid, free, or reduced), total payments, and purchases. The Payments for [Student Name] tab displays itemized payments made for a student. The All Payments tab displays itemized payments made by the payor for all students. The Purchases tab displays items purchased on a weekly basis. Click Previous and Next to navigate to another week. ~ 7 ~

8 The District allows you to make online payments using out One Touch System. To make an online payment, click the Make Online Payment box, which will take you directly to the website where you can make payments as a User or Guest. Follow the instructions to make your payment. If you have issues with the system, contact the school for additional assistance. 8. Login History The Login History Application allows you to view a history of the times you have logged into Family and Student Access. The list displays the date, time, and IP address of each login. You can also click Show Details to see the areas that you navigated to during each login. The Login History displays only your logins. Students cannot see their parent/guardian s login history and a parent/guardian cannot see their student s login history. 9. Report Cards The Report Cards section allows you to view electronic copies of report cards that are posted on Family Access. Click the hyperlink of a Report Card to view it. 10. Student Information The Student Information Application allows you to view demographic, family, and emergency contact information. (Note: The Bus Schedule and Contact Us tabs shown in the example are not in use.) Student/Family Info This tab displays a student s demographic, family, and emergency information. If an address on this tab is hyperlinked (shown in blue), you can click on the address to send an message. ~ 8 ~

9 Changing Student and Family Information Parents/guardians can request a change to Student and Family Information. (This option is not available to Student users.) To request a change: 1. Click Request Change(s) to my Child s Information. 2. Click Request Changes in the area in which you wish to make changes. 3. Make the desired changes and click Save. Changes require approval from the district and appear in red to indicate they are pending approval. Before a change is approved, you can click Undo Request Changes to delete the request. You can also click View History to see a log of changes or change requests made through Family Access, their status, and the reason a change is not approved by the district. 11. Test Scores The Test Scores section allows you to view test scores entered by the district. These are usually standardized or diagnostic assessments (e.g., WASL, MSP, HSPE) and not tests and quizzes relating to a specific class. To view a student s scores for a test, click Show Scores for the test you want to view. ~ 9 ~
