19 YouTube Ranking Factors 1. Relevant title, description and tags 2. Watch time and retention rate of videos (how many people watch to the end?) 3. Consistent publishing the more you publish, the better all your videos will rank 4. Video quality HD will outrank lower-quality 5. Number of views, likes ( thumbs up ), social shares and backlinks 6. Transcriptions and closed captioning

20 Your Video Title Use the keyword phrase you wish to rank for 120 characters max use Don t make it sound spammy similar to rules for copywriting, make it catchy, direct and grabs the reader s attention. You will be competing with a list of 19 other videos This title will be shown in YouTube and Google search results

21 Description 5000 characters allowed Add your targeted keyword phrase in the beginning, and a variation in the first sentence Add a quality body of text talking about your video Include links to other videos, your website, your Facebook page, etc The first two lines will show in the YouTube search results

Tips on increasing retention rate: Shorter videos (2-5 minutes) we will discuss when to create longer, 15 min+ videos Each video should answer a specific question Near the beginning, offer the viewer a special tip near the end

27 Be Consistent Think like a t.v. show If you publish a video every Thursday, continue doing so. This will not only grow your subscriber base, but YouTube will notice this and begin ranking all your videos higher. Because your followers will be expecting a new video from you on a certain day, retention rate will also be better.

28 Transcriptions Transcriptions are text files of your video. This is also a ranking factor, not only because you offer something more, but because the text will also be indexed and help you rank. You can write the transcription yourself and save and upload as a plain text (.txt) file, or you can outsource this to a place such as Speechpad or Scribie.com.

30 Your Content Creation Plan People often visit YouTube to find answers to questions. So, think of what these answers are. If you have a website on learning how to play the guitar, do research on common questions such as: How to play guitar Learn to play guitar

32 Google Keyword Tool You can go to the usual Keyword Planner tool in your AdWords account however, this only gives you Google searches Instead, go to Display Planner

33 Display Planner Click your keyword, and filter by video only this will show keyword ideas from YouTube, not Google

34 Keywords From YouTube YouTube itself will give you keyword ideas. Simply begin typing your keyword phrase, and you will see a list of relevant searches

35 Keyword Research (Cont d) Pay attention to these keywords too, because people will likely begin typing in their question, and click on an auto complete keyword phrase making it even more targeted and relevant as a phrase you want to rank for! Other places to find keywords and ideas: Ubersuggest ( Google Trends (

36 Creating Content From your keyword list, pick out questions you have answers to. For instance, if you have a site on learning guitar, you can have videos on: How to learn to play the guitar How to hold a guitar Fingerpicking guitar lesson Guitar chords How to play rhythm guitar etc

37 Creating Content (Cont d) Create short, separate videos, specifically answering all these questions. To save time, do them all at once. Reserve a day or two to do all of them. Then, upload them all to YouTube at once. You can schedule their publication, so if you publish on Thursdays, set every Thursday for the next 10 or 20 weeks to publish a video.

38 In Each Video Have a short intro and an outro, and use the same one in each video. This is for consistent branding, and can be outsourced in Fiverr or Upwork Have one annotation a few seconds after the video starts, with a call to action. Have another annotation near the end of the video. Do not annotate in the middle if people are watching this far, you don t want to break their engagement.

39 Market Your Videos Once a video is published, curate the content on your blog, on Facebook, Twitter, etc, and announce it on your list. Publish a press release on your videos, use CrowdForce and link to your YouTube subscriber channel or individual videos The idea is to gather social shares, Thumbs Up, and backlinks to your videos both to help rank your videos and to increase your YouTube subscriber list

40 Secret Sauce Tip: Suggested videos after your video is finished playing: By creating 10 or more videos, you stand a great chance of blocking any suggested videos from competitors after your video has ended. This is where using branded tags with you name, subscriber channel and website come into play. These tags affect what comes after your video. If you have many videos, the suggested video list will hopefully be all your other videos.

41 Secret Sauce Tip #2: Showing up as a Suggested video : Have your video show up after a high-ranking competitor video! By copying their tags, you can show up after their video is over, especially if they haven t optimized their tags. Be careful with this. Using the tags of competitor brand names, channel name, etc is considered grey-hat, and there could be copyright issues if it is a large brand J

42 Uploading Your Video Click Upload in your YouTube account and add your title, description, and tags also, make sure all your videos are in the same category

43 Secret Sauce : Your Video Thumbnail Though your title and first two lines of your description are vitally important, it is your thumbnail that will likely have visitors clicking your video other that of your competitors!
