1 College of the Canyons Valencia Campus GREETINGS! Welcome to the summer 2018 online section of Keyboarding I. I am Regina Roscigno, everyone calls me Gina, and I will be your guide for this learning experience called distance learning. I have been teaching at College of the Canyons for more than fifteen years, both in the CAWT department and for Continuing Education. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you throughout this fast-paced summer session. CAWT 110 Keyboarding I - develops a mastery of the computer keyboard by touch and proficiency in producing business letters, reports, tables, memos, and other documents using Microsoft Word. NOTE: This course requires a significant time commitment You will have EIGHT weeks from the start date to complete all of the assigned coursework. Summer Intersession classes cover the same 16 week course content as regular, full-length semester courses. Successful college-level work generally requires at least 3 hours of homework per course credit. This translates to at least 9 hours per week for a regular semesterlength, 3-unit course, or 18 hours per week for a Summer Intersession, 3-unit course. Although you may set your own hours, you must stay active in the course and communicate regularly with your peers and instructor. ONLINE COURSE INFORMATION: This course will be conducted entirely online and will begin on Monday, June 11, 2018 and end on Saturday, August 04. The course is considered 100% online, which means that all coursework assignments will be submitted online and there will be no face-to-face classroom meetings. In order to take this class, you must have access to the Internet and the ability to send . You must have access to a PC which has the full version of Microsoft Office Word 2016.
2 Most of your assignments will be submitted on the GDP Website. Access to this website will have to be purchased along with your Keyboarding Kit, which includes a GDP Account and two textbooks. All other assignments will be submitted to COC s NEW ONLINE DELIVERY SYSTEM, known as CANVAS. We will be using CANVAS as a means of communication and file sharing. Please note: You must have your own GDP Account. You are allowed a maximum of five weeks from the start date to complete the course. You are responsible for successfully completing all of the assignments in all of the chapters as well as all the assigned material on the GDP website. Help from the instructor is available as needed via or via the Discussion Help Forum on CANVAS. There will be no face-to-face meetings during the Summer Session. Please read the entire orientation letter before proceeding with the course. These pages will provide you with important information about required materials and required technology. Understanding more about how this particular online course is designed and its requirements will help you get off to a strong start. CANVAS Information: All students are issued a CANVAS account once enrollment fees for the class are paid. Accounts are created automatically by computer and take one-to-three business days after fees have been recorded. If you do not pay your fees or register by the first class meeting, you will not be issued a CANVAS username and password and will be unable to access the class until such issues have been resolved. The course syllabus and other important information are located on CANVAS CANVAS Login Students will log into Canvas using their MyCanyons user name and student as their password. Once a student logs into CANVAS, the password can and should be changed. It is advised that you change your password as soon as possible. Write your password down and store it in a safe place. WARNING: Passwords and usernames are case sensitive and must be entered EXACTLY as created! Your username is the beginning section of your my.canyons.edu address (not your social security number or student ID Number). You must have a my.canyons.edu address! The initial password for everyone is student (lower case) Here are some examples: STUDENT NAME MyCanyons address USERNAME PASSWORD Bill Gates bgates@my.canyons.edu bgates student Mickey Mouse mmouse@my.canyons.edu mmouse student Students must log on to CANVAS during the first day of class and post to the Discussions Attendance Forum that they are present or they will be automatically dropped by the system.
3 There may be a one-to-three business day delay after late enrollment before a student may be able to log on to CANVAS. If you have enrolled late into this course you must me at gina.roscigno@canyons.edu for me to hold your place. Once at the CANVAS site, login and read the online CANVAS manual, which is accessible by clicking on CANVAS HELP, and change your password and your personal information. Students should log in to CANVAS at least once per day to check for new announcements. You are responsible for all information disseminated through CANVAS. First Login: If you have used CANVAS at COC during the previous semester, your username and password will be the same. Otherwise you must login using the format stated above. CANVAS uses a username and password authentication model. If for some reason you forget your password, the only way to gain access to your account is to have your password reset. The reset process can take between 24 and 48 hours to complete. To avoid the need to use this process, CANVAS provides a method of ing your account information (username and password) to your address. By default, CANVAS will use your COC Student address. I am sure you will find the course an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Sincerely, Gina Roscigno Adjunct Faculty, Computer Applications and Web Technologies Department gina.roscigno@canyons.edu
Please note: If you already have an active SAM 2016 Account from another CAWT course, you do not need to purchase another SAM Code for this course.
