Therefore TF will report TF work and receive comments from participants in the meeting. Revised working document: No input was received from TF member nor SC 3C member after my request in the TF report in the last SC 3C meeting in Prague Therefore this revised draft was improved by TF leader and report to SC 3C Tel- Aviv meeting as a conclusion of Task force team work. - Unnecessary information (such as graphical symbol elements which proposed to be deleted and other redundant information were deleted from the previous working draft and the essential contents were revised in the attached draft table. - List of graphical symbol elements were summarized and collected to four groups of their particular meaning and function, such as Control, Object, Function and Safety related information. - TF leader tried to put meaning using already standardized graphical symbol descriptions, however some are not. 3. Following procedure: TF leader propose to circulate DC document before the 1st CD document for Guidelines for creation of graphical symbols for use on equipment Common symbol elements to receive comments from SC 3C member countries. 2 IEC SC 3C/TF Work result of SC 3C/TF and proposing content for circulation of DC document Introduction Objectives of Common graphical symbol element; A graphical symbol is a visually perceptible figure used to transmit information independently of language. Graphical symbols are used on equipment for a wide range of purposes. For such symbols, consistency in the design of families of symbols used in one location, or on similar equipment helps users to understand the meaning of the symbols. More than 3,600 standardized graphical symbols for use on equipment in ISO 7000 and IEC includes many different kinds of graphical symbol elements representing aspects of meaning or specific functions. ISO/IEC Joint Database disclose these graphical symbol elements by using search functions. New graphical symbol elements having similar meaning are increasing by creating and submitting by TCs/SCs. In addition, submitting TC/SCs will have trouble to find appropriate graphical symbol element. Some ambiguous graphical symbol elements cause confusions not only to TCs/SCs officers but also to customers. This Guideline will help consistent meaning of graphical symbol element in ISO 7000 and IEC standards and make it easier to create ew graphical symbols by TC/SC with the effective improvement for the customers understanding when using equipment. This guideline created by SC 3C through coordination with ISO/TC 145/SC 3 will be possible to include in ISO/IEC Basic principles for graphical symbols for use on equipment series as the fourth part. 2. Criteria Common graphical symbol element is formed by a single, simple shape to be combined with other graphical symbol part(s) showing specific meaning. Same graphical symbol elements should have same meaning and be used in multiple (different type of) technical fields (product areas). Independent symbol element to be used in one specific technical field can be created. 2
