4 CONNECTING TO A NETWORK DRIVE ON A MACINTOSH COMPUTER Dornsife Technology Services provides file storage for University departments, faculty and staff. The storage space that is shared by your department is located on the G:\ drive. Your personal storage space is located on the U:\ drive. This document explains how to access the shared and personal network drives from your Macintosh computer. Before You Begin 1. You will need to locate your department in the volume listing. You will need the volume number to access the correct file location. 2. If you are not on campus, you will need to connect to the VPN before you attempt to connect to the network drive(s). File Volume Listing and Server Address You will need the following server address and file volume number to access your department's shared drive and your personal network storage space. At the top of the screen, select the Go menu. A drop-down menu displays. 2. Select the Connect to Server... option, located at the bottom of the menu. The Connect to Server screen displays University of Southern California. All rights reserved. 5

7 3. Enter the server address of the file volume to which you want to connect. The server address was previously provided in this document. An example of how it should appear is show above. 4. Select the Connect button to initiate a connection to the server. You will be prompted to enter your login information. 5. Enter your Dornsife username and the corresponding password in the appropriate fields. These are the credentials with which you log into your workstation. 6. Select the Connect button. A connection is made to the server and you will be prompted to mount a drive University of Southern California. All rights reserved. 6

8 7. Earlier in this document, you were instructed to locate the file volume that corresponds to your department. In the example above, the files exist on file volume 8. "FSC_V" is Dornsife Technology Services internal naming convention. The number associated with the volume, '7', is the information that is pertinent to connecting to the shared network drive. Select the volume number that corresponds to the file volume information that you were provided previously in this document. Then, select the OK button. The file server is displayed. 9. Select the folder that corresponds to your department. For example, the Physics department folder is entitled 'PHYS'. Double-click this folder to display the contents. 10. The department folder, in this example 'PHYS,' is the shared departmental driv e (also called the G:\ drive). This is where you will store and access files and folders you want to share with other members of your department University of Southern California. All rights reserved. 7

9 11. Also contained inside the departmental folder is a folder entitled 'usr.' The 'usr' folder contains the individual network storage space, also known as the U:\ drive. Double-click the usr folder and then locate the folder that is entitled with your Dornsife username. In this example, the Dornsife username is 'bars.' The person to whom that Dornsife username is assigned would select that folder to access their personal network storage space.
