10 Convention for Storage Capacity Values Getting Help Physical storage capacity values (e.g., disk drive capacity) are calculated based on the following values: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes 1 MB = 1,000 2 bytes 1 GB = 1,000 3 bytes 1 TB = 1,000 4 bytes 1 PB = 1,000 5 bytes Logical storage capacity values (for example, logical device capacity) are calculated based on the following values: 1 KB = 1,024 (2 10 ) bytes 1 MB = 1,024 KB or 1,024 2 bytes 1 GB = 1,024 MB or 1,024 3 bytes 1 TB = 1,024 GB or 1,024 4 bytes 1 PB = 1,024 TB or 1,024 5 bytes 1 block = 512 bytes If you need to call the Hitachi Data Systems Support Center, make sure to provide as much information about the problem as possible, including: The circumstances surrounding the error or failure. The content of any error message(s) displayed on the host system(s). The content of any error message(s) displayed on Storage Navigator. The Storage Navigator configuration information (use the FD Dump Tool). The service information messages (SIMs), including reference codes and severity levels, displayed by Storage Navigator. 11 1 Hitachi Storage Navigator Messages and s This chapter covers the various messages and error codes released by the storage system. Hitachi Storage Navigator Messages Message Window Format Remote Console-Storage Navigator s Hitachi Storage Navigator Messages and s 1-1

12 Hitachi Storage Navigator Messages Figure 1-1 shows a typical message window displayed by the Hitachi Storage Navigator for Hitachi Universal Storage Platform V and Hitachi Universal Storage Platform VM (hereafter referred to as USP V/VM) software. Figure 1-1 Sample Message Window (Information- Message) 1-2 Hitachi Storage Navigator Messages and s

13 Message Window Format Figure 1-2 illustrates the message window s format: [X] message-text (YYYY ZZZZZ) Figure 1-2 Message Window Format X indicates the message level. There are four message levels, as shown below. All USP V/VM system message panels display the following information: Message level: Information Warning Fatal error The server is unable to accept the request from Storage Navigator. One possible cause is that some process is in progress at the server. This message does not indicate an error. Message text: Descriptive text that appears in the message window. It may include variables %s (character string) and %d (numeral). The values of these variables are determined when processing is performed. Messages with a part code 60xx (where xx is a two-digit number) are TrueCopy for IBM z/os (TCz) or TrueCopy (TC) messages. This manual contains TCz messages only. If you are a TrueCopy user, note that: The word M-VOL in TCz messages is equivalent to P-VOL in TC messages. The word R-VOL in TCz messages is equivalent to S-VOL in TC messages. Part code: The ID of the application that issued the message. In Figure 1-1, the part code is 110. Message number: Decimal number within the range of 0000 to In Figure 1-1, the message number is If Storage Navigator starts and displays the following message, refer to the code and number the (YYYY ZZZZZ) represents. A check box may be indicated in the message window. If you check it the message will not appear until you login again. A network error occurred, the server is not ready, or an error occurred in the server. (YYYY ZZZZZ) Hitachi Storage Navigator Messages and s 1-3

14 Remote Console-Storage Navigator s To find solutions to the Hitachi Storage Navigator for USP V/VM errors, refer to Table 1-1 of this manual or the Troubleshooting chapter in the user guides for the program products causing the errors. Table 1-1 lists the error codes and error messages for Storage Navigator and provides recommended action for the error conditions. In some cases, the Recommended Action column may be blank. In these circumstances, the user should take actions based on instructions provided in the error message and based on what the user is trying to accomplish. Table 1-1 also provides the severity level and failure level of the error conditions. Severity s. The severity levels for the error codes are: i: Information E: W: Warning N: The server is unable to accept the request from Storage Navigator. One possible cause is that some process is in progress at the server. This message does not indicate an error. s. The failure levels for the error codes are: 0: No 1: Select MSG OK to end forcibly 2: All Refresh or Exit is valid only 3: All Refresh, Refresh, or Exit is valid and the buttons, other than the buttons of the functions in which the error occurred, are valid. 4: To make refresh possible 5: No status change 6: No change with refreshing automatically 7: Storage Navigator is automatically switched to view mode. If necessary, change the mode to Modify. 1-4 Hitachi Storage Navigator Messages and s
