IMAGING MADE EASY Overcoming Projection Problems Beth Beighlie Contact equipment provider What OS is computer? Does it have the applications you need? Does it have other resources you need? Does it have internet / data connection? Will it read your cd or flash drive? Contact equipment provider If possible, before the event, test your presentation on the host system that you will use for actual event At Showtime Copy presentation & resources to local drive on host system Install all missing applications Open presentation, linked files, applications, resources and websites download additional copies of this document at it.med.harvard.edu/ris 1
Just before Showtime Run through entire presentation in Presentation Mode on host system and confirm correct display of Template backgrounds Fonts and bullets Inserted images, charts and movies Linked files, applications and websites Setting up 1. Connect computer to projector 2. Power up projector 3. Power up computer lcd/data projector issues Bring whatever interface that you will need to connect your computer to the projector Most projectors come with standard monitor cables, but if you need special adaptors or dongles, you are responsible for that computer issues Don t run your presentation from your laptop battery-bring your power supply and use it Turn off System Standby, Energy Saver and Power Saver After connecting computer to projector, make sure both devices are set to same resolution download additional copies of this document at it.med.harvard.edu/ris 2
mac display issues pc display issues Video Mirroring should be on Find option in Display Options in System Preferences If the image appears washed out, set resolution for projector and monitor at 1024 x 768 at 60 Hz and then reduce the monitor brightness Know Fn-F# combination for cycling through display options Know how to access your Display Control Panel and how to use it Bring your presentation Bring resources Movies Unusual fonts Linked files Animated gif files Bring platform-specific installers for non-standard applications QuickTime Windows Media Player RealPlayer Specialized scientific applications download additional copies of this document at it.med.harvard.edu/ris 3
Try to use platform you created presentation on (Mac or Windows) When naming files, use extensions (i.e.:.ppt,.gif,.mov,.avi) Transport presentation and resources on two types of portable media (i.e.: flash drive and cd) Test portable media: it should be read by all platforms Copy presentation and resources to local drive of host system - do not present from portable media Avoid using Template Backgrounds Avoid using bullets Avoid using unusual fonts Pack and Go (pc) PowerPoint Package (mac) In theory: This will collect all the components of your presentation: movies, sounds, images, fonts solves Mac to PC QuickTime issues In reality: IT IS UNRELIABLE- be sure to check that all components are part of package by testing your presentation download additional copies of this document at it.med.harvard.edu/ris 4
additional backup Consider having hardcopy backup acetates or 35mm slides Save as HTML Images aren t as good Animations and transitions won t work Save as QuickTime Movie Animations are sluggish Bring PowerPoint Viewer installer Inserted movies are the biggest problem in PowerPoint presentations Therefore you must test all inserted movies on host system Inserted movies should be located in the same folder as the presentation If displaying presentation on both monitor and projector, make the projector the primary display Possible solutions Restart computer On host system, delete and reinsert uncompressed.avi or.mov file Use Apple QuickTime Pro to export to uncompressed.avi or.mov file and reinsert new file Replace movie with hyperlink and play directly from player download additional copies of this document at it.med.harvard.edu/ris 5
