1 KIN 147 Lab 06: Ground Reaction Force (GRF) Data Analysis Excel analyses work much better on PCs than on Macs (especially older Macs) Your goal is to correctly analyze GRF data Analyzing the GRF Data from the First Force Plate o Open the Microsoft Excel file called KIN 147 Lab 6 GRF Data Analysis Template Under the File dropdown menu, select the Save As command Rename your file as follows: Your Name KIN 147 Lab 06 Walking Footwear Comparison GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 1 Click on the Save button o You will be analyzing your GRF data files. Click on the Dropbox link to the KIN147 Student Data sent by to you from Dr. Kao (suggestion: bookmark this link for use on future labs) Click on folder for this lab Click on GRF Data folder Click on your group s folder Click on the file for your regular shoe walking trial The file should open online In upper right corner of the screen, you will see a blue Download dropdown menu Click on the dropdown arrow Select direct download The file should open Save the file to a new folder on your desktop Click on the Dropbox link to the KIN147 Student Data sent by to you from Dr. Kao (suggestion: bookmark this link for use on future labs) Click on folder for this lab Click on GRF Data folder Click on your group s folder Click on the file for your barefoot walking trial The file should open online In upper right corner of the screen, you will see a blue Download dropdown menu Click on the dropdown arrow Select direct download The file should open Save the file to a new folder on your desktop o Open Microsoft Excel Click on the File menu In the dropdown list, click on Open In the Open dialog box, navigate to the new folder you created on your desktop Make sure you are displaying All Files
2 Double-click on the.csv file for your regular shoe walking trial Select the cell underneath the following labels First Force, Fz, and N. o Hold down the Ctrl key and type the letter c Select the window on your desktop showing the Excel file Your Name KIN 147 Lab 06 Walking Footwear Comparison GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 1 Select the tab at the bottom of the worksheet labeled Digital Filtering fc=10 Select cell G4 o Hold down the Ctrl key and type the letter v o For PC users, hold down the Ctrl key and press the ê key. For Mac users, hold down the Command key and press the ê key. o Press the è key 3 times o Hold down the shift key and Press the è key 6 times the Ctrl key and press the é key. For Mac users, Command key and press the é key. o Hold the down the Ctrl key press the D key. Select cell F4 o Type in the value 0 o Press the enter key o Select cell G4 For PC users, hold down the Ctrl key and press the ê key. For Mac users, hold down the Command key and press the ê key. Press the ç key 1 time For PC users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Ctrl key and press the é key. For Mac users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Command key and press the é key. o Under the Home tab, click on the word Fill Select the word Series In the box next to the word Step Value, type in Click on the OK button Save the file Click on the File menu In the dropdown list, click on Open In the Open dialog box, navigate to the new folder you created on your desktop Make sure you are displaying All Files
3 Double-click on the.csv file for your barefoot walking trial Select the cell underneath the following labels First Force, Fz, and N. o Hold down the Ctrl key and type the letter c Select the window on your desktop showing the Excel file Your Name KIN 147 Lab 06 Walking Footwear Comparison GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 1 Select the tab at the bottom of the worksheet labeled Digital Filtering fc=10 Select cell H4 o Hold down the Ctrl key and type the letter v Save the file o Creating Charts of Your Data GRF Z Data Select cells N4, O4, and P4 o For PC users, select the Insert tab. Click on the Insert Scatter (X,Y) or Bubble Chart icon. Select Scatter with Smooth Lines. o For Mac users, select the green Charts tab in the toolbar. Click on the Scatter icon. A drop down menu will appear. Select Smooth Lined Scatter. You need to move the horizontal axis to the bottom of the graph Move the mouse pointer over the vertical axis of your GRFz graph until a text box appears with the following words: Vertical (Value) Axis Perform a right mouse click On the menu that appears, select Format Axis Find the following words Horizontal axis crosses o Select Axis value o Type in the minimum GRF value on the vertical axis scale (e.g., -50) Trim the horizontal axis Exam your GRFz data Find the time when each foot made contact with the force plate (e.g., , ) o Subtract 1 second from each these times o Round down each number to the nearest whole number (e.g. 11, 12) Find the time when each foot left the force plate (e.g., , ) o Add 1 second to each of these times o Round these numbers up to the nearest whole number (14, 15)
4 Move the mouse pointer over the horizontal axis of each graph until a text box appears with the following words: Horizontal (Value) Axis Perform a right mouse click On the menu that appears, select Format Axis In the window that appears, type in the smallest of the 2 times when each foot made contact with the force plate (e.g., 11) in the box labeled minimum and type in the largest of the 2 times when each foot left the force plate (e.g., 15) in the box labeled maximum Edit the legend For PC users, right mouse click on the legend o Choose Select data... o In the popup window that appears, left click on Series1 o Left click on the Edit button o Type in the word Regular in the Series name: box o Left click on Series2 o Left click on the Edit button o Type in the word Barefoot in the Series name: box to finish editing the legend For Mac users, right mouse click on the legend o Choose Select data... o In the popup window that appears, left click on Series1 o Left click in the cell next to the Name: o Type in the word Regular o Left click on Series2 o Left click in the cell next to the Name: o Type in the word Barefoot Add appropriate chart title and axis labels Select the GRFz Chart (PC users, follow the instructions below) o Select the Design toolbar underneath the words Chart Tools o Click on the Add Chart Element drop down menu o Place mouse pointer over the words Axis Titles Click on Primary Vertical o Highlight the label Axis Title to the left of the vertical axis Type in the following: GRF (N) o Click on the Add Chart Element drop down menu o Place mouse pointer over the words Axis Titles Click on Primary Horizontal o Highlight the label Axis Title underneath the horizontal axis Type in the following: Time (seconds) o Highlight the label Chart Title at the top of the chart Type in the following: Lab 06 Walking Footwear Comparison GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 1 Filtered (fc=10) o Repeat for the partcipant s remaining jumps
5 Select the GRFz Chart (Mac users, follow the instructions below) o Select the purple Chart Layout tab next to the green Charts tab o Click on the icon that says Axis Titles o A drop down menu will appear, select Vertical Axis Title Select on Rotated Title o Highlight the label Axis Title to the left of the vertical axis Type in the following: GRF (N) o Click on the icon that says Axis Titles o A drop down menu will appear, select Horizontal Axis Title Select on Title Below Axis o Highlight the label Axis Title underneath the horizontal axis Type in the following: Time (seconds) o Click on the icon that says Chart Titles o A drop down menu will appear, select Title Above Chart o Highlight the label Chart Title at the top of the chart Type in the following: Lab 06 Walking Footwear Comparison GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 1 Filtered (fc=10) o Save the file o Go to the document KIN 147 Lab 06 Submittal Instructions to submit your lab work.
