1 Tutorial : First board in CircuitMaker. Objectives 1. Create a new project in CircuitMaker. 2. Design electronic circuit in CircuitMaker schematic editor. 3. Design a pcb board for your circuit in CircuitMaker PCB editor. 4. Configure manufacturing output files and release project. Step 1: Create a new project 1. Use Start button on Home ribbon to open TASKS navigation panel. 2. Click on New Project under Projects drop down menu.

2 3. In the Add Project dialog, type in project name: 555 Flashing Led. Click Save button.

3 4. On the Edit Project page click Save button. 5. On the 555 Flashing Led project page click Open Design button. 6. The 555 Flashing Led project is opened in CircuitMaker. Step 2: Add a new schematic document to the project 1. Click on Project button on Home ribbon and select Add new Schematic item.

4 2. Type in file name for the schematic document. Click OK. 3. The schematic document is added to the project and the schematic editor is ready.

5 Step 3: Add components to the schematic. 1. On View ribbon click on Libraries button to open the Libraries panel. 2. In the Libraries panel, type in TLC555CP in the search field and hit Enter. Under Revisions scroll down and select revision 8. The name of the revision will end with -8. Correct component revision is CMP-d8c011cae97e With the revision 8 selected, click Place button.

6 3. With component under mouse cursor move to the center of schematic document. Left click to place symbol on schematic. Tip: CircuitMaker will stay in component placement mode after placing first symbol. To

7 exit component placement mode hit ESC key. If you accidentally place more than one component, exit placement mode first and then left click on component you would like to remove from schematic and hit DEL key. 4. In the Libraries panel search for RNF14FTD100K resistor. Select revision -10.

8 5. Place two resistors to the left of the 555 timer symbol. Tip 1: When you pick this resistor from the Libraries panel, component will be rotated horizontally. Before you place first instance hit SPACE key to rotate component counter-

9 clockwise. Tip 2: You can zoom in and zoom out in the schematic editor view with the PageUp and PageDown keys. 6. In the Library panel search for ESH106M050AC3AA and select revision 1.

10 7. Place the capacitor below the resistors. Notice this is a polarized capacitor and the positive terminal should face up. Use SPACE key to rotate the symbol if necessary.

11 8. In the Libraries panel search for WP710A10ID and select revision 9.

12 9. Place the LED to the right of the 555 timer. Rotate the symbol with the SPACE key.

13 10. In the Libraries panel search for Keystone 1026 and select revision 6.

14 11. Place the battery holder to the right of the LED. Use SPACE key to rotate the symbol and place it with the positive terminal facing up.

15 12. On Home ribbon click on Power Port button and from the drop down list select GND symbol. 13. Place the GND symbol below the GND pin on the 555 timer symbol. 14. All components are on your schematic!

16 Step 4: Wire schematic. 1. On Home ribbon click on Wire button. 2. Left click on end of the GND pin on the 555 timer symbol. This will begin placing the wire on your schematic. Tip: When you hover mouse over the pin, CircuitMaker will change mouse cursor to a red crosshair to indicate best place to begin wiring.

17 3. Left click on top of the GND power port. This will end wire on schematic completing electrical connection between the GND pin on the 555 timer symbol and the power port.

18 4. When last connection point is made, hit ESC key to exit wire placement mode.

19 5. Use wire tool to finish wiring the circuit. Tip: When in the wire place mode, use SHIFT + SPACE keys to toggle between different placement modes. Use SPACE key to change submodes. Look at the status bar at the bottom where information about current place mode is displayed.

20 6. On Tools ribbon click on Annotate button and select Annotate Schematics Quietly item. 7. CircuitMaker will check how many designators need to be updated. Click Yes. 8. All designators on schematic are updated now.

21 9. On Home ribbon click on Project button and from drop down menu select Compile. 10. CircuitMaker will list all compilation issues in the Messages panel that you can open on View ribbon.

22 Step 5: Save project. 1. On Home ribbon click Project button and select Commit Project from drop down menu. 2. CircuitMaker will remind about saving documents before committing project. Click Yes.

23 3. Ensure all documents are selected, type in comment and click OK button. 4. When project is committed, all project files will show up to date status.

24 Step 6: Add PCB document to the project. 1. On Home ribbon click on Project button and select Add new PCB from the drop down list. 2. Type in pcb document name and click OK. 3. CircuitMaker will add new pcb document to the project and will open it in the PCB editor.

25 Step 7: Import components from schematic document and place them on the board. 1. On Home ribbon click on Project button and select Import Changes From 555 Flashing Led.PrjPcb item.

26 2. In the Engineering Change Order dialog click on Execute Changes button. 3. When importing process finishes, click on Close button. 4. All components imported from the project will be placed in the bottom right corner of the PCB editor s workspace. Tip 1: You can zoom in/out in the PCB editor with PageUp / PageDown keys. Tip 2: You can hold down CTRL key and use mouse wheel to zoom in/out Tip 3: You can hold down both the CTRL key and the right mouse button while moving mouse up or down to zoom in/out. This specific combination is using mouse gestures. Tip 4: Use CTRL + PageDown keys to set zoom level automatically to see all components at once.

27 Tip 5: Right click anywhere in the PCB editor workspace and from popup menu pick View -> Fit Board to set zoom level to see the whole board. Tip 6: You can PAN view around by holding down right mouse button and moving the mouse. 5. Left click on the BT1 component and while holding down the left mouse button drag it to the left of the board area. Release the mouse button to drop component in new location.

28 4. Move the C1 component closer to the BT1. While dragging component, CircuitMaker will draw thin lines showing electrical connections between the C1 and other components. Before you release the left mouse button you can rotate component to ease routing. Use the SPACE key to rotate component while moving it. Notice in the picture the C1 component is rotated so the negative terminal is facing up. 5. Move the U1 component closer to the C1 capacitor. Then move the R2 to the right of the U1 component. Rotate it before placing to ease routing later on. The screenshot shows electrical connections just before the component was placed on the board. Use the SPACE key to rotate component while dragging it.

29 6. Move other components closer to each other. Step 8: Define board shape. 1. On Home ribbon click on Board Shape button and select Edit Board Shape from the drop down menu.

30 2. Move the mouse cursor over the edge of the board shape in between defined vertices. Mouse cursor will change to indicate that you can drag board edge to a new location

31 3. Left click on the board edge and while holding down the left mouse button drag it down closer to the components. Release the mouse button when you are there.

32 4. Move other board edges to define new board shape. 5. When you are done, left click anywhere in the PCB editor workspace. The board will appear in edit mode

33 6. On Home ribbon click on Board Shape button and select Create Primitives From Board Shape. 7. In the Primitives From Board Shape dialog type in Width 10 mil and change Layer to Outline. Click OK button.

34 8. The board will have the outline defined. Default color is blue as indicated on the Outline Tab Step 9: Route connections. 1. On Home ribbon click on Route button.

35 2. With the Interactive Routing Tool selected, left click in the middle of the BT1 component pad. The mouse cursor will change to a small circle to indicate where is the best snap point to start the track. 3. While in the interactive routing tool, the PCB editor will mask out all objects that are not electrically connected to the track you are placing.

36 4. While placing the track look at the bottom status bar. It will show information about the current interactive router tool mode. Tip 1: You can toggle between different router modes with the SHIFT + SPACE keys. Tip 2: You can toggle submodes with the SPACE key. Tip 3: When routing not in straight line, you can commit only current track segment and stay in the interactive router mode to place next segment. Left click where you want the track segment to end. Tip 4: To exit interactive router tool use ESC key. 5. Make connection between the BT1 pad and the C1 pad.

37 6. Route the rest of the board. 7. On Home ribbon click on Project button and select Commit from the drop down list. Type in comment and click OK button

38 Step 10: View board in 3D 1. While in the PCB editor hit key 3.

39 8. In the 3D view, hold down the SHIFT key. The mouse cursor will change to give you rotation controls. Tip : While holding down the SHIFT key, hold down the right mouse button and move the mouse around. That s how you rotate the board.

41 Tip 1: Key 0 will center the board. Tip 2: Key 9 will flip it by 90 degrees. Tip 3: You can flip board by clicking on Flip Board button on View ribbon. Tip 4: Zooming in and out is the same as in the 2D view. 11. Use key 2 to return to the 2D view. Step 11: Configure manufacturing outputs and release project. 1. On Home ribbon click on Project button and select Release Project from the list. 2. In the Project Release dialog enable outputs.

42 3. Click on Configure link next to the Bill of Materials

43 4. In the Grouped Columns left click on Comment column and while holding down the left mouse button drag it down to the All Columns list. Release mouse button to drop it there.

44 5. In the All Columns field scroll down to Footprint and LibRef. Disable both from the report.

45 6. In the All Columns enable Manufacturer Part Number parameter. The Manufacturer Part Number column will appear in the report. 7. Enable Include Parameters From PCB option.

46 8. In the All Columns scroll down to the PCB parameters. Enable Center-X(Mil), Center- X(mm), Center-Y(Mil), Center-Y(mm), Layer and Rotation. Corresponding columns will appear in the report. 9. You can change output format in the File Format drop down list. Microsoft Excel Worksheet is a widely accepted format for the BOM. When ready click OK button.

47 10. In the Project Release dialog click on Configure next to the Gerber Files.

48 11. In the Gerber Setup dialog on General tab set Units to Inches, change Format to 2:5 12. In the Gerber Setup dialog on Layers tab use Plot Layers drop down menu and select Used On. This enables all used layers from the design to be outputted for manufacturing.

49 13. In the Gerber Setup Dialog on Drill Drawing tab enable Plot all used layer pairs for both the Drill Drawing Plots and the Drill Guide Plots.

50 14. In the Gerber Setup dialog on Apertures tab enable Embedded apertures (RS274X) option.

51 15. In the Gerber Setup dialog on Advanced tab select Suppress leading zeroes option for the Leading/Trailing Zeros option and select Reference to absolute origin for the Position on Film option. Click on OK button when ready.

52 16. In the Project Release dialog click on Configure next to the NC Drill Files.

53 17. In the NC Drill Setup dialog change Units to Inches, change Format to 2:5. Select Suppress leading zeroes for the Leading/Trailing Zeroes option and choose Reference to absolute origin for the Coordinate Positions. Tip : The NC Drill Setup is related to the Gerber Setup and in most cases your PCB manufacturing house will ask you to set these options in both outputs identically. We do it this way in the tutorial as well. Click OK button when ready.

54 18. In the Project Release dialog click on Release button.

55 19. CircuitMaker will run all necessary outputters to produce manufacturing files. During the process it will show status for each kind of output it needs to generate. Wait for the Release Summary dialog to open.

56 20. When all manufacturing outputs are produced the Release Summary dialog opens up automatically. Click CLOSE button.

57 21. Your design is released and in the Project panel in CircuitMaker you will notice all Generated outputs are automatically added in during the process.

58 Summary Congratulations! You have designed and released for manufacturing your first PCB board in CircuitMaker. You can use your web browser to navigate to your user profile page on and download the zip file that includes all manufacturing files that you would like to send out for production.
