7 Introduction 1 7 Introduction Is your Mac too bright or too dim after you install Microsoft Windows? Are brightness keys on your Mac not working? Doesn't your Mac auto adjust brightness any more? Can your Mac brightness change on its own with ambient light sensor? If you experience Mac brightness problem on Windows, download and use the Mac Brightness Control software.

8 8 1.1 Mac Brightness Control Overview Mac Brightness Control allows you to adjust the brightness level of your Mac (MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, imac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini) on Microsoft Windows. For instance, a Mac with Windows 7 loaded is too bright for most users, and you can make its screen dimmer with the help of the Mac Brightness Control software. If the brightness keys on your Mac keyboard are not working properly after you install and restart Microsoft Windows, you can drag the brightness slider in the Mac Brightness Control software to change your screen brightness. The software enables your Mac running Microsoft Windows to auto adjust brightness without the aid of your Mac's ambient light sensor (ALS), reduce its screen brightness after a certain period of time saving power, and calibrate its monitor brightness when Windows starts up. Advanced features include the association of weather, lumination, and brightness as a profile, which is a set of configurations to keep screen brightness level, whether to set brightness on your system startup, whether to reduce brightness when your Windows system runs into an idle state, and how long you can tolerate the idle. Profile can be one or many, and this depends on your practical needs. A profile can be either saved for future use or applied to take effect immediately. You can create profiles for sunny daylight, rainy night, cloudy dusk et al, and you can even create a profile for each user. For example, sunny daylight for John Smith, rainy night for My Daughter. Mac Brightness Control can be minimized to the bottom-right corner of your screen as a tray icon application. Included in its popup menu are several useful features such as to reduce your Mac brightness to the minimum immediately or raise your Mac brightness to the maximum for special purpose like presentation, movie playback, or gaming. Another useful feature is to turn off your monitor (Mac screen) instantly for energy saving and prolonged lifetime. 1.2 System Requirement Mac Brightness Control is specifically designed for Apple computers running Microsoft Windows. Here are the minimum requirements.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows 8, Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and later OS (**). Hard Drive: 30 MB free disk space (**). NOTE: (*) - Mac Mini and Mac Pro require external monitor or external display attached. Therefore, the Mac Brightness Control software might not work with all external display devices. NOTE: (**) - Mac Mini and Mac Pro require external monitor or external display attached. 11 Usage 2 11 Usage This topic helps you to familiarize yourself with the UI (user interface) of Mac Brightness Control on Microsoft Windows, On the left side of the UI, you have a slider. The slider allows you to adjust your monitor brightness (screen brightness) from the lowest 0% to the highest 100%. As you drag the knob, the brightness value changes. On the right side of the UI, you have an indicator that shows the energy efficiency ratings. The brighter your screen, the worse energy efficiency rating. In the middle, you have a gauge, which displays the actual brightness level of your monitor. The minimum and maximum value are given as the lowest and highest scales. You can click on any scale value on the gauge to adjust your screen brightness and/or monitor brightness. You can create a profile to keep your brightness settings including brightness level, whether to set brightness on your system startup, whether to reduce brightness when your Windows system runs into the idle state. Profile can be one or many, and it depends on your practical needs. A profile can be either saved or applied (take effect immediately). 2.1 Basic Basic operations include how to adjust brightness level, brightness percentage, and energy efficiency rating for your MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, imac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini on Microsoft Windows.

12 12 Mac Brightness Control Brightness Percentage Slider The slider on the left side allows you to adjust your screen brightness and/or monitor brightness from the lowest 0% to the highest 100%. As you move the knob upper and upper, the brightness value increases in percentage. Brightness Level Gauge The gauge, which displays the actual brightness level of your monitor or screen, is on the right side of the Brightness Percentage Slider. The minimum and maximum value are given as the lowest and highest scales. You can click on any scale value on the gauge to adjust your screen brightness and/or monitor brightness. Energy Efficiency Rating The indicator on the right side shows the energy efficiency ratings. The brighter your screen, the worse energy efficiency rating. You can only change the rating by changing either the Brightness Percentage Slider or the Brightness Level Gauge. NOTE: Mac Pro and Mac Mini require external display devices, such as a digital monitor or a digital screen. Therefore, Mac Brightness Control might not work properly with certain types of external display devices. In this case the software would report Not supported.

13 Usage Advanced Advanced operations involves the concept of profile. A profile is a set of configurations to keep brightness level, whether to set brightness on your system startup, whether to reduce brightness when your Windows system runs into an idle state, and how long you can tolerate the idle. Profile can be one or many, and this depends on your practical needs. A profile can be either saved or applied (take effect immediately). Profile cannot be copied across your Mac computers. For instance, you cannot use a MacBook Pro profile to adjust your imac on Microsoft Windows or verse versa. However, if you have two MacBook Pro of the same model, and you can transfer the profile from one computer to the other.. Icon and Profile An icon is required for each profile you create. Let's say, you choose an Cloudy icon, and set the brightness level to 3, and you save the profile by clicking the Save Profile button. The next time you choose the Cloudy icon, the brightness level is loaded and the brightness of your screen and/or monitor is adjusted from its current value to Level 3. Profile Name Drop Down List You can change the default name of your profile in the profile name drop down list, for instance, you change it to cloudy2_night or any text indicating it's a cloudy night. If you click the drop down arrow button on the right side of the above drop down list, you will get all the available icons,

14 14 Mac Brightness Control To choose an icon is to choose a profile. When the profile is empty (not set), nothing appears after the text label Brightness Level. If you want to create a profile for dunno, simply set an initial brightness value, and click the Save Profile button. Set Brightness Settings on Startup Certain models of MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, imac, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro do not support brightness control very well after Microsoft Windows gets loaded. The brightness level is always the highest value (100% brightness) even if you make the brightness dimmer last time you turn off your Mac. This Mac brightness problem can be rectified when you enable this option. Mac Brightness Control helps you set the brightness level of your choice on Windows startup to reduce eyestrain. Reduce Brightness when System Idle If you do not move your mouse or press any key on your keyboard after a certain period of time, let's say, 20 minutes, you can minimize the brightness of your MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, imac, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro to save energy and prolong its lifetime.

15 Usage 15 Save Profile Your profiles are saved in the registry hive of your Windows. You can export the settings by downloading a backup and recovery tool from MacBrightness.com, Apply Profile After you select a profile the brightness level of your monitor is adjusted immediately, however, the feature of Set Brightness Settings on Startup and Reduce Brightness when System Idle are not effective. Therefore, you need to click this Apply Profile button to enable or disable the two features. NOTE: Mac Pro and Mac Mini require external display devices, such as a digital monitor or a digital screen. Therefore, Mac Brightness Control might not work properly with certain types of external display devices. In this case the software would report Not supported. 2.3 More Advanced When you minimize or close Mac Brightness Control, you will notice that it shrinks to an icon on your system tray (bottom-right corner of your screen). You can move your mouse, click the tray icon, and get a pop-up menu like,

16 16 Mac Brightness Control Some advanced features are hidden in this menu. Show Window When the main UI window minimizes or disappears, you can revoke the UI at any time. Restore Brightness When your the monitor/screen of your Mac gets dimmer after a specific period time, and you need to restore the brightness level to its previous value, you can simply click Restore Brightness. Once the brightness level is restored, Mac Brightness Control restarts the timer to count the elapsed minutes to reduce the screen/monitor brightness. Min Brightness Set the brightness level of your monitor/screen to the lowest. Max Brightness Set the brightness level of your monitor/screen to the highest. Turn Off Monitor Turn your monitor into the Sleep state to save energy. Your running applications, unsaved works, background tasks would not be affected. Exit Shut down Mac Brightness Control. Your unsaved settings not belong to any profile would be recorded and the icon and name of your last chosen profile would also be saved. NOTE: Mac Brightness Control will include Mac Brightness Widget and Mac Brightness Toolbar for Windows in addition to the current system tray icon in future releases.
