Introduction is a comprehensive graphics package produced by Corel. It contains tools that allow you to paint, edit, and retouch your images, and supports a variety of file types. This document will familiarise you with the interface (version 8) and show you how to use some of its tools. For more information about see: Corel homepage, including links to many resources and tutorials. Users Group homepage. Prerequisites It is assumed that you are running from the ISS desktop, know how to login to the network and are familiar with Microsoft Windows XP. No prior knowledge of or other graphics packages is assumed. Other related documentation Basic Image Editing in Further Image Editing in Information Systems Services Page 3 of 32

Chapter 1 Getting Started Objective To start and then create a new file or open an existing file. Instructions You will run from the Start menu then either use the New command on the File menu to create a file, or the Open command on the File menu to open an existing file. Comments For more information about file types see Appendix A File Types. Activity 1.1 Create a new image. Task 1 On the Windows taskbar, click on the Start button, then from the Start menu choose Programs> Graphics> 8. Task 2 To create a new file, click on New from the File menu in. A New Image dialog box opens: Information Systems Services Page 4 of 32

The image dimensions can be set using the presets drop-down box or by specifying the width and height of your image in pixels, inches or centimetres. Pixels are the smallest unit of an image. In this dialog box, the term resolution refers to the resolution of the image, but there are three different types of resolution: image resolution; monitor resolution; and printing resolution. You need to be aware of these three meanings of resolution when working with images. Image resolution is defined as the number of pixels per unit of length, for example, pixels per inch (ppi). An image with 150 ppi contains smaller pixels and therefore more of them than an image of the same dimensions with 72 ppi. The 150 ppi image will have a larger file size, a higher resolution and display more detail than the 72 ppi image. Monitor resolution is defined as the number of pixels per unit length on a monitor, for example dots per inch (dpi). PC monitors display approximately 96 dpi. Printing resolution is defined as the number of ink dots per unit of length, also called dots per inch (dpi). A good quality laser printer prints at dots per inch. 6 In the Image Characteristics group box, there is the choice between a raster or vector background. This specifies the type of the bottom layer of your image: choose a raster layer for photographic-like images and a vector layer for vector graphics. The Color Depth drop-down box lets you specify the maximum number of different colours in your image. Click on the down arrow to choose from 2, 16, 256 or 16 million colours or greyscale (256 shades of grey). The more colours you choose, the more disk space you will need to save your image. An estimate of space required is shown below the image type. In the Color box, the background colour or material can be selected. For raster images, click on the colour box to launch the Material dialog box (only for 16 Million colour images), or the colour palette. A transparent background can be selected for 16 million colour or greyscale images only. For vector images, only the colour depth can be selected as all vector images start with a transparent vector layer. Task 3 Task 4 Task 5 Enter 300 in the width and height boxes, and make sure that Pixels is selected. Enter 150 in the Resolution box with resolution set to Pixels/inch. Set the background to be a Raster Background and choose 16 Million Colours (24 Bit) as the Image type. Click on Transparent to check the box. Click on OK to create your image. Before you go any further save your file by choosing Save from the File menu. The following dialog box opens: Information Systems Services Page 6 of 32

Click on the down arrow next to the Save in: box and choose the drive you want to save your image on. Next click on the down arrow next to the Save as type: box to choose the file type. Choose Image (*.pspimage, *.psp ). For more information about the different file types, see Appendix A. Now enter a filename in the File name: box. Click on Save to save your file. Activity 1.2 Open an existing image. Task 1 To open an existing file, click on Open from the File menu. A dialog box similar to the one shown below will open. 9 Chapter 2 The Interface Objective To learn how to use the interface Instructions You will explore the workspace, menus, toolbars and palettes available within. Activity 2.1 Explore the Workspace in. Task 1 If is not open then open it (see instructions in Chapter 1). If after Chapter 1, the image of the vector balloon is not already open, then open it now (see Chapter 1, Activity 1.2). Your screen should look something like the following depending on which toolbars and palettes are open. Title Bar Menu Bar Standard Toolbar Tool Options Palette Materials Palette Layer Palette Tools Toolbar Open Image Status Bar Information Systems Services Page 9 of 32

Note that the Title Bar will reflect the filename of a selected open image. The Menu Bar shows all the menu options available with an image open. The Toolbars can be customised by the user. Toolbar buttons can be added, removed or re-arranged. Task 2 With the vector balloon image still open and the cursor over the image, observe the status bar at the bottom of the screen. The left hand side of the status bar displays information about the currently selected tool. The right hand side displays the x and y coordinates of the cursor (if over the image), the image dimensions and the colour depth of the image. If you are using the selection or cropping tools, the status bar will show the following information while performing a selection. Extra information is supplied on the status bar to inform you of the coordinates of the selection, the width and height of the selection and the ratio of width to height. Activity 2.2 Explore the Toolbars in. As well as the status bar, also contains the following toolbars: Standard toolbar, Tools toolbar, Browser toolbar, Effects toolbar, Photo toolbar, Script toolbar and Web toolbar. 16 Chapter 3 Browsing and Printing Objective To browse multiple images and print single or multiple images. Instructions You will open the Image Browser and print some images. Comments The built-in browser is especially useful for finding and previewing images. Activity 3.1 Browse multiple images. Task 1 From the File menu, choose Browse. The Browser will open and you will see that it consists of two panes or sections. The left-hand pane displays an Explorer-type view of the folders on your computer. The right-hand pane displays thumbnails of any recognised images, if they exist, in the selected folder on the left pane. If there are no recognised images in a selected folder, the right-hand pane will be blank. Task 2 On the left pane, choose the following directory: C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\ 8\Sample Images Images should then appear in the right pane and appear similar to the graphic below. The Browser window lets you view, open and manage your files and is especially useful for previewing your images. You may have many images Information Systems Services Page 16 of 32

from scanned or digital photographs in one folder, and the Browser window lets you identify images as well as rename them. Often, photos from digital cameras are named automatically with meaningless names and it is very useful to be able to browse all the images together and rename them. As well as renaming, images can be opened, deleted, copied, moved and printed from the Browser window. Activity 3.2 Perform tasks on images from within the Browser window. Task 1 Let the cursor hover over an image on the right-hand pane and note the tooltip information that appears. The tooltip provides the filename, image dimensions, colour depth, filesize, file format; and the date and time the image was created or last edited. Task 2 Click once on the boat.jpg image to select it. Right-click on this selected image to see a context-sensitive menu appear. Select the Information option to view further information about the image. The dialog box shown below will appear. Information Systems Services Page 17 of 32

Click on OK to close the dialog box. Task 3 Right-click once on the background area of the right pane of the Browser (i.e. not on an image). This launches a different context-sensitive pop-up menu, which provides options for finding and sorting images. Select the Sort option from the menu. The following dialog box will appear: Information Systems Services Page 18 of 32

Select the Ascending Sort Order, select File Size for the sort condition and click OK. The thumbnails should then be reorganised in the Browser window with the smallest file first. Reorganising files using this option can be useful if you want to quickly find a small file, or want to order images by date, for example. Task 4 Click twice on the web button downstate.gif image (which has the smallest file size) to open it. Note that an image can also be opened by selecting the image, right-clicking then selecting Open from the pop-up menu. Then close the image by selecting Close from the File menu. Task 5 Task 6 Task 7 To select all the files at once in your folder, from the Edit menu, choose Select All. To deselect all the files in a folder, from the Edit menu, choose Select None. To invert which files are selected, from the Edit menu, choose Invert Selection. (If no files are currently selected, this menu option will be unavailable. Select one or more files first to be able to invert the selection.) Files can also be moved, renamed, copied, deleted and rotated from the Browser window. Information Systems Services Page 19 of 32

Activity 3.3 Explore the printing options for an open image. Task 1 From the same directory, open the dogs.jpg image, then select Print from the File Menu. You will then be presented with the following dialog box: Task 2 Select the Printer button in the top right-hand corner to select a printer first. Select an appropriate printer for your location from the list, then click on OK. Under the Placement tab, select the Centre on Page radio box under Size and Position. Notice how the image location on the page alters in the preview in the right-hand side of the dialog box. Now select the Fit to Page radio box, and notice how the image enlarges to the width of the page but keeps its aspect ratio. Next, select Landscape under Orientation and note how the image now occupies the whole page. Click the Close button to clear the dialog box. These options are probably the most useful when setting up an image on a page for printing. Information Systems Services Page 20 of 32

Task 3 Close the dogs.jpg image by clicking the cross in the top right-hand corner of the image, or by selecting Close from the File menu. (Do not close the Browser.) Task 4 With the Browser still open select Print from the File Menu. The Browser Print dialog will open as shown: Note how the thumbnail images are represented on the preview on the righthand side of the dialog box. This is a very good way of printing thumbnails of a large number of images at once, such as may be gained from a digital camera for example. Click on Close to close the dialog box. Task 5 Printing multiple images on one page is a convenient way of saving paper if you do not want full-page images. With the Browser still open, open two images (dogs.jpg and boat.jpg), by double-clicking each one. Information Systems Services Page 21 of 32

Then select Print Layout from the File menu. The Print Layout screen will appear with thumbnails of your open images on the left-hand side and a blank workspace in the middle. The images from the left-hand side can be dragged over to the workspace and resized as desired. Images already dragged to the workspace can then be arranged automatically by selecting Auto Arrange from the Preferences menu. Note that print jobs arranged in this way can be very large. Layouts of images can be saved and reused at a later date. Select File -> Close Print Layout to close the Print Layout window. Information Systems Services Page 22 of 32

Chapter 4 Screen Capture Objective To learn how to capture screen images. Instructions You will use to capture a variety of screen images. It is very useful to be able to take pictures of screens for a variety of reasons, from software documentation like this document, to coursework or reports for example. allows you to capture screens in a few different ways. Activity 4.1 Perform a screen shot of the full screen. Task 1 From the File menu, select Import, then Screen Capture, then Setup The following dialog box will appear: As you can see, on the left-hand side of the dialog box there are five different options for the type of area you may want to capture: Area Captures an area of the screen that you define, Full screen captures the full screen, Client area captures the workspace of an open application, Window captures the open active window, Object captures a feature, window object, or group of objects. In the middle of the dialog there are Activate capture using options to set. You can do this with a Right mouse click, or by pressing a Hot key that you define, or by setting a Delay timer. Information Systems Services Page 23 of 32

On the right of the dialog box, there are two options. The first one specifies whether to include the cursor in the screen shot. (This option is not available with an Area capture, as the cursor is needed to define the area to capture.) The second option allows you to make multiple screen shots before being returned to. Task 2 On the left-hand side of the Capture Setup dialog box, select Full screen for the type of Capture. For Activate capture using, select Right mouse click. Click on the Capture Now button. The settings made to the dialog box will be saved, the dialog box will close and will minimise to an icon on the Windows taskbar in readiness for your screen shot. You can then arrange your screen as you would like it for the screen shot, before clicking the right mouse button. Task 3 Task 4 Task 5 Open up another application such as Windows Explorer. (If you do not know how to do this then click the Start button on the Windows taskbar, and from the Start menu, choose Programs>Utilities>Windows Explorer.) On the left-hand side of the screen, navigate to your home directory on the M: drive, and choose a subdirectory, if any, to display. Once you have your screen looking the way you d like it with your files visible, right-click the mouse to take a screen shot of the full screen. Your screen will be captured and you will be taken back to to view the image. As the image was a full screen shot, it may by default be zoomed out of a one-to-one viewing ratio. To view at full size, from the View menu, select Zoom > Zoom to 100%. Task 6 If you want to save the image, press F12 to save it in your home directory. Activity 4.2 Perform a screen shot of an area. Task 1 Task 2 From the File menu, select Import, then Screen Capture, then Setup On the left-hand side of the Capture Setup dialog box, select Area for the type of Capture. For Activate capture using, select Hot key. If F11 is not displayed in the drop-down box next to Hot key, then select it. Click on the Capture Now button. Again, will minimise. Task 3 If Windows Explorer is not the active application, then activate it now. Information Systems Services Page 24 of 32

Task 4 Task 5 As before, navigate to your home directory on the M: drive, and choose a subdirectory, if any, to display so that the files are listed on the right-hand side. Move your mouse to the top left of the text Name under which the files are listed on the right-hand side of the window. Press the F11 key, which was defined as the hot key in. The cursor should now change to the Area capture crosshair. is now ready to capture your screen. The next click made with the mouse will define the start of the area screen capture. Click once with the left mouse button and then release the button. The area selection has now started. Move the mouse down and right to create a small rectangular selection area. As you move the cursor to define the area, the pixel dimensions (width x height) appear in the centre of the box. When the desired image is within the rectangular border, left-click with the mouse again to finish the area selection You will then be returned to where your newly-created image will be the active image. Save the image in your home directory if desired. Area-type screen captures are very powerful as you can determine exactly the dimensions of your image and capture a specific part of the screen. Information Systems Services Page 25 of 32

Screen captures tend to be commonly saved in the JPEG, BMP and GIF formats as these can be imported into other applications easily. If you want to capture a screen from itself, you will need two instances of open, one to do the capturing, and one to be captured. Information Systems Services Page 26 of 32

Chapter 5 Image Formats Objective To learn about the different file formats available. Instructions You will convert an image from PspImage format to JPEG format, and learn about raster and vector file formats. can read nearly 60 different file formats and save in 40 file formats. These different formats are available to see in the dialog box when you open a file or save a file. While you are working on an image, it is probably best to keep your image in the PspImage format to be able to use all features. Other formats do not support layers, masks, selections, and other features of. Then, when you have finished editing your image, you can use the Save As or Export command to save a copy of the file in the desired format. If you try to save an image in a format that doesn t support the features of, then a message is displayed warning you of the changes that will be made to the image and giving you the option not to continue. For example, saving a PspImage with layers in the JPEG format will flatten the layers and merge them into one. Activity 5.1 Save a PspImage image in JPEG format. Task 1 From the File menu, select Open. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\ 8\Sample Images, choose Vector balloon.pspimage and click on Open. Task 2 With the Vector balloon.pspimage open, select Save As from the File menu. In the resulting dialog box, change the Save In: location to be your home directory and change the Save as type: to JPEG. Click on Save. You will then be presented with the following dialog box: Task 3 Click Yes to proceed and save the image in JPEG format. (Clicking No would cancel the Save As and take you back to the image.) Now that the image is saved in JPEG format, the JPEG version cannot be used to edit layer information, as this will have been lost. It is good practice to save your images in the PspImage format while you are working on them and then only convert to JPEG, or whatever other format you need, when finished. Of course, keeping the Information Systems Services Page 27 of 32

original copy in PspImage format means that you can always go back and edit further if you should want to in the future. Activity 5.2 Raster and Vector File Formats The file formats that directly supports include 34 raster image formats and 12 meta and vector image formats. A raster image is composed of individual elements, called pixels, which are laid out in an imaginary grid. If you increase the magnification of an image, you can see these pixels as squares on the screen. An object is stored as a group of pixels with information about the colour of each pixel. Pixels can be blended to create soft edges and to smooth between objects. This makes the raster format a good choice to use for photographic images. All the following raster file formats are supported by, if not for writing, then at least for reading. The formats in bold are also further described in Appendix A. Examples of raster file formats include: BMP; CLP; CT; CUT; DCX; DIB; EPS; FPX; GIF; IFF; IMG; JIF; JPG; KDC; LBM; MAC; MSP; PBM; PCD; PCT; PCX; PGM; PIC; PNG; PPM; PSD; PSPIMAGE; RAS; RAW; RLE; SCT; SGI; TGA; TIF; WPG. An image in the raster format is resolution-dependent. You specify the pixel dimensions when you create the image, so if you later decide to increase its size, you enlarge each pixel, which lowers the quality of the image. A vector image is not defined by pixels, but contains instructions for drawing the image. Each object in a vector image is stored as a separate item with information about its position in the image, its size, colour, and attributes. This makes vector images suitable for logos, fonts, and line drawings. Examples of Vector file formats include: CDR; CGM; CMX; DRW; DXF; EMF; EPS; GEM; HGL; PCT; PIC; WMF; and WPG. All of these vector formats can be read by. Further information about these formats can be found in the Help system. An image in vector format is resolution-independent. It can be resized without losing any detail because it is stored as a set of instructions, not a collection of pixels. Therefore, each time you display an image, you actually recreate it from the instructions. In its strictest definition, a vector format can only contain vector information, but in practice, many vector formats allow the inclusion of non-vector data such as a raster image or raster text. Information Systems Services Page 28 of 32

Meta formats do exactly that and explicitly allow more than just vector information. For example, a Windows Metafile (EMF or WMF) could contain a raster image, some text and vector annotations to the image. In previous versions of, any vector images read into PSP were essentially rasterised. If you then tried to resave these images in a vector or meta file format, the data within was actually raster data only. The raster data was wrapped inside a vector file format purely so that it could be read into different vector packages. Paint Shop Pro 8 appears to have introduced support for vector images although complex images may still not display properly. Best results have been gained with the Metafile formats (EMF and WMF). Information Systems Services Page 29 of 32

Appendix A File Types supports reading 60 and writing over 40 different graphic file formats. This Appendix lists some of the most common types, their features and uses. File Type Extension Windows Bitmap.bmp Up to 24 bits. The Windows Bitmap format is widely used and images of this type can be read by most applications on a PC. The file is not compressed, and therefore file sizes can be very large. GIF CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format.gif Up to 8 bits. The GIF format represents each pixel by, at most, 8 bits which means that GIF images can only contain at most 256 colours. This means it is a good format for saving many pictures and drawings as it is optimised for high contrast images and blocks of colour. The latest version of GIF (GIF89a) supports animation as well as single colour transparency. The GIF format does not support layers. If the GIF format is used for photos however, degradation of the image may be visible. File sizes are generally much smaller than BMP images. JPEG Joint Photo Expert Group.jpg.jpeg Up to 24 bits. JPEG images can contain up to 16 million colours, and are usually used for photo-realistic images. If you select this image type you are also prompted to select the level of compression. The greater the level of compression, the smaller the file size but the poorer the quality of the image. JPEG is designed for compressing either fullcolour or grey-scale images of natural, realworld scenes. It works well on photographs, naturalistic artwork, and similar material; not so Information Systems Services Page 30 of 32

well on lettering, simple cartoons, or line drawings. JPEG is lossy, meaning that the decompressed image is not quite the same as the one you started with. (There are lossless image compression algorithms, but JPEG achieves much greater compression than is possible with lossless methods.) JPEG is designed to exploit known limitations of the human eye, notably the fact that small colour details are not perceived as well as small details of light-and-dark. A useful property of JPEG is that the degree of lossiness can be varied by adjusting compression parameters. This means that the image-maker can trade off file size against output image quality. You can make extremely small files if you don't mind poor quality; this is useful for applications like indexing image archives. Conversely, if you aren't happy with the output quality at the default compression settings, you can jack up the quality until you are satisfied, and accept lesser compression. There are two good reasons for using JPEG: to make your image files smaller; and to store 24- bit-per-pixel colour data instead of 8-bit-perpixel data. PNG Portable Network Graphics.png Up to 24 bits. The PNG format is used to transmit and store bitmapped images. It was created specifically for the Internet and other networks. It provides high colour support and slightly better compression than the GIF format. The current generation of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer do not completely support all of the PNG features and previous browsers do not support it at all. Information Systems Services Page 31 of 32

PSP Paint Shop Pro.PspImage.psp Up to 24 bits. PspImage is the native image format for Paint Shop Pro. It can contain layer, vector, mask, and selection information for images. The PspImage format can also provide optional lossless compression to create smaller files. If you wish to retain image information such as layers, masks, vectors, transparency for example, then save a master copy of your image in the format. TIFF Tagged Interchange File Format.tif.tiff Up to 24 bits. The TIFF format is a widely used file format from Aldus Corporation and it provides several types of compression. The compression types available are: Fax CCITT 3 compression, Huffman encoding compression, LZW compression, Packbits compression, Uncompressed. Information Systems Services Page 32 of 32
