MyDVD User Guide Welcome to MyDVD, an easy disc-creation program that lets you turn your videos into professional-looking multimedia disc projects, complete with image-rich menus and music. MyDVD offers two modes to choose from: Magic Mode, for almost effortless polished results, and Advanced Mode, where you can customize your projects to add a personal touch. In this guide, you will learn about MyDVD workspace, page 1 Creating a project in Magic Mode, page 4 Using Advanced Mode, page 6 Project basics, page 13 MyDVD workspace MyDVD has a two modes: Magic Mode and Advanced Mode. Each mode has its own workspace, but some elements are shared. In addition, Advanced Mode has different workspaces that let you organize (Tree Mode) and edit (Edit Menu). MyDVD User Guide 1

Media Browser panel Edit panel Toolbar Advanced Mode includes an Edit Menu workspace with an Edit panel and a toolbar. Creating a project in Magic Mode Magic Mode is an express mode ideal for creating quick multimedia discs. There are two basic steps: 1. Choose a template 2. Add your media Your media files are automatically organized into a menu flow, based on the template. For example, if you choose a template that lists 4 videos on the main menu, and you add 8 videos to your project, Magic Mode will automatically add a submenu to the project so that you can navigate to all 8 videos. 4 MyDVD
Magic Mode automatically creates as many submenus as you need for the number of videos in your project. Menu templates include onscreen navigation buttons (circled in red) that let you move between the main menu (left) and submenus (right). Tip: Magic Mode creates the menu list from the video file names. To optimize your menu, give your videos meaningful file names before adding them to a Magic Mode project. If you decide that you want to customize a project that you create in Magic Mode, you can click the Advanced Mode button to convert the project. Advanced Mode projects cannot be opened in Magic Mode. To create a disc project in Magic Mode 1 Start MyDVD. 2 In the New Project dialog box, choose the type of disc you want to create: DVD AVCHD Blu-ray (not available in all versions) 3 In the Project Name dialog box, type a name for your project and navigate to the location where you want to save the project file. MyDVD User Guide 5
4 In the MyDVD window, verify the mode by looking at the bottom of the window. If you see a Magic Mode button, click it, and click Proceed. This will restart the project in Magic Mode. 5 Type a title for your disc in the DVD-Video box. 6 In the Choose a Theme box, click the thumbnail of the template that you want to use for your menu. Note: Most templates can display 2-4 menu items per page. You can use the template thumbnail as a general guide for the number of items in the menu list. 7 In the Media Browser panel on the left, navigate to the videos that you want to add and drag them to the Drag Movies Here box. Note: The file names will be used to create the menu lists. 8 Verify the disc capacity for the project by checking the Project size bar at the bottom of the window and checking the Disc size dropdown menu to the right of the bar. 9 Click the Preview button to view and test the menu setup and videos. 10 When you are happy with your project, click one of the following: Burn Project button burns your project to disc. Ensure that there is a writable disc in your disc drive. Save Project to an ISO Image button to a single file that functions like a disc. saves your project Using Advanced Mode The Advanced Mode in MyDVD lets you customize your project in a number of ways. For example, you can add submenus to organize your videos 6 MyDVD
edit the names in the menu and submenu lists add chapter points to videos (helpful for longer videos) change the background picture used for the template change the menu background music Although you can convert a Magic Mode project to an Advanced Mode project, if you know that you have a project that has many video files, it s best to start in Advanced Mode. You can save your project (.MyDVD file) so that you can work on it later or output it to a different format. MyDVD User Guide 7
Before you start It s a good idea to think about how you want to organize your media in your Advanced Mode project. Advanced Mode uses a tree structure and submenus to organize projects. Let s take a look at an example project. Example: I have a quite a few video clips from a weekend trip. For my project, I decide to include the best clips from three different activities. My main menu title will be Winter Trip, and I will create submenus for each activity: Dog sledding (3 video clips) Snow Challenge (2 video clips) Parade (3 video clips) In the example, the main menu template has placeholders for four videos and each submenu mimics the same structure. You don t need to use all the placeholders (empty placeholders have no impact on the final disc), but you cannot exceed four videos within a menu or submenu. If you have more than four videos for any one group, you can Example project in Tree Mode create another substructure that suits the project. In the example described, if there were nine dog sledding videos, another submenu based on participants could be created: Mom (3 videos), Dad (3 videos) and Kids (3 videos). 8 MyDVD
To create a disc project in Advanced Mode 1 Start MyDVD. 2 In the New Project dialog box, choose the type of disc you want to create: DVD AVCHD Blu-ray (not available in all versions) 3 In the Project Name dialog box, type a name for your project and navigate to the location where you want to save the project file. 4 In the MyDVD window, verify the mode by looking at the bottom of the window. If you see the Advanced Mode button, click it, and click Proceed. 5 In the Media Browser panel, click the Theme tab, and choose a template. 6 In the Media Browser panel, click the Media tab, and navigate to the video files that you want to add. 7 In the Tree Mode panel, look at the placeholders available in the chosen template and decide how to organize your project to accommodate your media. You can click the menu button in the upper-right corner of a placeholder, and click any of the following: Add Menu adds a submenu Rename lets you rename the selected menu Remove removes the selected submenu Note: You can drag the Zoom slider below the Tree Mode panel to change the zoom level for the tree view. 8 When your structure is set, drag your media from the Media Browser panel to the media placeholders. MyDVD User Guide 9
Note: You can click the menu button in the upper-right corner of a media placeholder to rename or remove a media file. 9 Complete any additional editing. For more information, see To add chapters to a video on page 11 and To edit menu layout, text, background imagery, or music on page Verify the disc capacity for the project by checking the Project size bar at the bottom of the window and checking the Disc size dropdown menu to the right of the bar. 11 Click the Preview button to view and test the menu setup and videos. 12 When you are happy with your project, click one of the following: Burn Project button burns your project to disc. Ensure that there is a writable disc in your disc drive. Save Project to an ISO Image button to a single file that functions like a disc. saves your project 10 MyDVD
Tip: You can mix-and-match templates in your project. In the Media Browser panel, click the Theme tab, and click the arrow to the right of a template to reveal the Main and Chapter thumbnails. Clicking one of these thumbnails updates the currently selected menu, submenu, or chapter placeholder in the Tree panel. Tip: You can also add media to your tree by using the Add Title command in the menu. The placeholder for the media is added automatically, but you can t control where it is created (the next available location in the tree structure). To add chapters to a video Clicking the template arrow (circled in red) reveals template components that can be mixed-andmatched. 1 In the Tree Mode workspace of Advanced Mode, click the thumbnail of the video to which you want to add chapters. 2 Click the menu button in the upper-right corner of the placeholder and choose Add Chapters. 3 In the Edit Chapters dialog box, do one of the following: Below the video preview, drag the scrubber along the time bar or use the playback controls to set the chapter position, and click Add chapter here. In the Automatically create chapters area, set time intervals for chapters by entering values for the minutes (Min) and seconds (Sec), and click Go. The chapter points and thumbnails are added to the chapter list on the right side of the dialog box. MyDVD User Guide 11
4 Click OK to return to the Tree Mode and review the new Chapter Menu. To edit menu layout, text, background imagery, or music 1 In the Tree Mode view of Advanced Mode, click the thumbnail of the menu that you want to edit. 2 Click the Edit Menu button below the Tree Mode pane. 3 Do any of the following: To change the menu layout, click an object in the Edit panel (a red box appears around the selected object), and drag the object to a new position. To change the menu music, click the Music button, and navigate to the audio file that you want to use. You can also click the Volume button to set the volume for the audio. To change the background image, click the Photo button and navigate to the image file you want to use. 4 To review your changes, click the Play button. 5 When you are finished, click the Tree Mode button. 12 MyDVD
Project basics There are a number of basic tasks that you can perform in both Magic Mode and Advanced Mode. Auto Save, Save, Save As You can save your projects so that you can edit them later. By default, autosaving is enabled, so your work is protected in the event of a program or system interruption. You can turn off autosaving if you do not want to overwrite your file as you work. You can also use Save As to save different versions of your project to a new file name. Intro videos You can add an intro video to your project (for example, a bumper video or opening narrative). Project settings At any time, you can review and change project settings. For example, you can view the disc format, determine what happens when you click menu items, lock button aspect ratio, set alerts, and apply the chosen settings as the default for future projects. Erasing a disc You can erase existing content from a disc before you burn. To enable or disable autosave Click File menu > Auto Save Project. A check mark indicates that Auto Save Project is enabled. Note: Auto Save Project overwrites your project file as you work. Use Save As and save to a new filename when you want to create a different version of your project. MyDVD User Guide 13
When Auto Save Project is off, you can use File menu > Save to save your project manually. To save a project to a new file name Click File menu > Save Project As, navigate to the location where you want to save the file and type a file name. The file is saved in the.mydvd format. To open a saved project 1 Start MyDVD. 2 Click File menu > Open. Tip: You can also open a project file from the New Project dialog box by clicking Open Existing Project or Open Last Project. To add an intro video to your project 1 Click Tools menu > Add Intro Video. 2 Navigate to the video that you want to use, and click Open. The intro video is added before the main menu. In Advanced Mode, it displays in the tree structure. To view or change project settings Click File menu > Project Settings, and change the settings you want. To erase a disc 1 Ensure the disc you want to erase is in your disc drive. 2 Click Tools menu > Erase Disc. 14 MyDVD
