EandT Touchscreen Driver helpviewer General information Welcome to UPDD version 4. Although the underlying driver is fundamentally the same as the version 3 driver this release addresses the issue of cross-platform compatibility of the driver s utility programs. A new calibration program has also been written to remove java dependency under Mac OS X and Linux. Over the coming months we will also be enabling a number of embedded touch utilities that have been written but are not sufficiently stable for release. A full revision history can be viewed in the UPDD Console, About box and also found on our web site here. Not all version 4 programs are available in this release as it has been necessary to release this driver to deliver support and functionality as it is implemented. The intended UPDD suite of utility programs are as follows: Program Status User Console Released Driver s control program aimed at general, non technical, users Calibration Released New calibration program Test utility Released New test and draw utility Daemon Program Released Background task processing: system tray functions, video rotate monitoring, PnP detection etc Event Selector Released Utility to switch between two event states, normally Left and right click. Windows only. Extensions Under test Touch extensions and utilities Activator Under development Quick access to touch related functions Advanced Under development Advanced driver and device settings for technical users SDK assistance Under development UPDD SDK API programmers guide and example code Language files Released Common language files are under construction and will be released as available. A completed language file will allow all utility programs to be localized to the language of the system. User Console The new look console is shown below and has three main users areas; the device display/selection, the function selection and the display area. Individual functions are described in detail in the help system. Not all functions are available across all platforms but it is our intention to make as many functions platform compatible ASAP. Where functions are not available the control will be removed from the UPDD Console. For most systems it is unlikely that any changes will need to be made to the driver configuration as the default settings are optimized for best performance. Great care should be made in changing any of these settings as they may have an adverse effect on the performance of the pointer device. 1

The console supports keyboard hotkeys (accelerator keys) via the Alt key. When selected on the keyboard the hotkeys are underlined on the given dialog, such as the example below; Alt H Hardware, Alt C Click Mode, Alt P Properties. System Tray Utility Under Windows, the UPDD daemon task offers a system tray utility ( functions. ) to invoke a number of UPDD pointer device If the icon shows a red X it indicates that there are no active controllers (no PnP controllers are detected or no other controllers are listed or they have been disabled (see Enabled option below). In this state the touch screen will not be working until a PnP device is connected or disabled devices are enabled. A single click will list the menu items as described below. A double click will load the UPDD Console. Menu Item 2

Enabled Indicates if the device is logically enabled/disabled in UPDD. If a device is physically disabled (e.g. a PnP device is unplugged) the text will be shown in red. A tick indicates that the device is enabled and a cross indicates that it is disabled. For a serial controller it also shows the serial port in use. This option can be used to temporarily disable the pointer device. If more than one device is configured a sub menu lists the devices to show the enabled state. If all devices are disabled or inactive the system tray icon shows a red X to indicate to the user the touch screen will not be working. Calibrate Invokes the Calibration procedure Adjust Settings Invokes the UPDD Console Test Invokes the Test Utility Event Selector Invokes the Event Selector Redetect PnP devices UPDD 4.0.x only. PnP handling improved in 4.1.x so not required. Redetects UPDD supported PnP devices that may be assigned to other drivers, e.g. HID. Help Invokes the UPDD Help system About General information Mouse Emulation The mouse emulation modes have been renamed under this version 4 of the driver and are described in full here. Mouse emulation considerations are described in detail on our web site here. Documentation A full set of on-line documentation, covering all aspect of the UPDD software suite and related topics is available on the web. Defines hardware and device settings The hardware dialog is used to associate the pointer device with the monitor / desktop area that is controlled by the device. It also shows hardware port information. Shows the desktop area handled by the pointer device. This is normally set to the whole desktop in a single monitor system. In a multi-monitor environment this option is used to associate the device to a specific monitor. In the example shown below the device USB touch screen is assigned to the desktop area displayed on Monitor 2: A custom desktop area can also be defined to restrict the cursor movement to a specific area within the desktop. 3

See on-line multi-monitor documentation for more information. Shows the port connected to the device. In the case of USB, PS/2 and Bus connected devices this shows connection information. In the case of serial this option can be used to configure serial port settings. This option is used to add a device. Under UPDD 4.1.x only non USB devices are manually added. USB devices will be automatically added by the PnP manager. Used to remove a device. Under UPDD 4.1.x only non or inactive (unplugged) USB devices are manually removed. Active USB devices cannot be removed. If shown, this option invokes the controller s firmware page to adjust firmware settings and / or test the controller. Use the Help button on the firmware dialog to show the associated help file. Click Mode settings The Click Mode dialog defines the click mode emulation and links to the click mode settings within the operating system. Shows the current click mode emulation. Selection is disabled if Extended Touch is enabled and forced to Click and Drag setting. A full mouse click is the action of a pen down followed by a pen up. In the following click emulations, where pen down is specified but with no indication if it s a left or right click, then the Event Selector setting will dictate the click performed. Pen down then drag. Pen up at lift off Drag then click at lift off. Pen down and pen up at point of touch. No movement. Left pen down then drag, left pen up at lift off. Stationary stylus invokes right click. Interactive switch delay determines right click delay. Starting with version UPDD can deliver touch co-ordinate data to the Windows operating system via the Mouse class (Mice device) or HID class (Virtual HID touch device) interface. In certain editions of Vista/Win7 OS data delivered via the HID interface will be utilised by the extended touch functions built into the OS. This setting indicates what interface to use. When disabled the Mouse class interface is used and all standard UPDD features are available, such as Click Mode selection. This will reduce the extended touch features to those that work with a mouse type device so features such as gestures will no longer work. When enabled standard UPDD features that clash with the extended touch features are disabled and the UPDD click mode is set to Click and Drag. Extended touch features currently only work with the primary monitor. The setting should be disabled when the touch screen is not associated with the primary monitor. Indicates if touch is silent. If disabled a beep is sent to the system internal speaker (not sound card). The system must have an internal speaker configured and working. Disabled if the OS, such as Vista 64 bit, does not support the speaker interface used by UPDD. Visual notification indicates if visual feedback is shown during Interactive Touch right click countdown (only Windows at time of writing). 4

Adjust the mouse pointer settings defined within the operating system. Settings should be set to compliment touch usage, especially the double click settings. Test icons Used to test right and double clicks. A tick is shown if the click test is successful. Controller properties The Properties dialog defines device properties. Associates a name to the device. By default the name is the driver s controller device name. Applies a filter to produce smoother drawing. Software implementation of a low pass filter algorithm to remove jitter. This is a more advanced approach to filtering that can improve drawing but will affect the speed of drawing the higher the value used. The Lift off Time value specifies the time interval required to register a stylus lift after the last touch packet is received. Lift off time is defined in units of 20ms. This value is used to perform a pen up if the Use Lift off packet is disabled otherwise Pen ups are generated as soon as the stylus leaves the pointer device display. However, because this timer is triggered after each received touch packet it is important to ensure the value is greater than the time interval between data packets otherwise pen up events will constantly be generated. If this value is set to zero pen ups based on time are disabled. This is a useful setting for controllers working in Delta mode, that is, data is not generated unless the x or y co-ordinates change. Stabilization causes small movements to be ignored. Applies a filter to produce smoother drawing. Averaging takes the average of the last N co-ordinates. This is a very basic approach to filtering that can improve drawing and not affect drawing speed. Priority In a multi pointer device environment this setting indicates the priority given to the device: Interlock: The device can only be used if no other device is in use (i.e. touch screen being touched) and the time since the last use of another device exceeds the release time period. Release time is defined in units of 20ms and defaults to 20ms. Max setting 100 = 2 seconds. Admin: Any device currently in use is forced into a pen up state and the device is given immediate priority. Defines the interlock release time, as described above. Only shown if a pen up data packet is generated by the device on stylus lift off. If enabled the pen up data packet is used to invoke pen up otherwise the pen up processing will generate a pen up event at the lift off time threshold as described above. Windows only - The Anchor Mouse option is set if the mouse cursor is to return to its original position after the pointer device has been used. Normally used in multi-monitor configurations where the cursor is to return to another monitor. Currently a system wide setting that effects all UPDD configured pointer devices. 5

Indicates if the device is enabled. If the device is disabled the hardware port s resources are available for use by another device or process. This is a way of freeing up the resources without having to uninstall the driver. One example of this is where a serial to USB converter is used and the device needs to be stopped before it can be safely unplugged from the system. If UPDD has a connection to the device it cannot be stopped until disabled by UPDD. Reload default Properties settings. Introduced in All settings on dialog are returned to their original values except Name, which stays as currently shown, Anchor Mouse set off and Enabled which is set on. If shown on the dialog, holds less common, advanced features, enabled as required. Edge Acceleration Settings whereby cursor accelerates towards the edge of the screen when stylus moves towards the edge. Useful if cursor needs to slide off desktop to invoke a system function, such as hidden task bar that is shown when cursor is pushed off edge. The Height and Width settings are based on a x logical desktop area (3000 works well). The gain value is the movement accelerator (20 works well). Only works for primary monitor. In some environments the edge acceleration function may result in the cursor moving beyond the calibration area in which case the Ignore touches outside the calibrated area should not be set. Ignore touches outside calibrated area Touches generated outside a calibrated area can be ignored e.g. a touch screen is larger than the video display area which may be used for UPDD Toolbars only. If set, when this area of the screen is touched the touch is ignored. Displayed in Mac OS X only - Enabled if the touch screen is used to run classic mode applications. With this enabled the driver is optimized for classic mode but will still work in native mode and changes the way mouse clicks are fed into the OS. If this is incorrectly set for the mode in use it is possible to lose the occasional touch when tapping the screen fast. Displayed in Mac OS X only Enables the new low level OS driver interface that better handles mouse emulation if keyboard keystrokes are being used with mouse clicks e.g. CTRL mouse click to select multiple items. Displayed in Mac OS X only - The driver can automatically adjust calibration if the system is switched between Landscape and Portrait views. Landscape is always 0 but Portrait can be either 90 or 270 and this is selected in the System Preferences Display dialog. Unfortunately we have not found a way to programmatically determine the degree of rotation as selected in the Display dialog so it has to be manually defined here such that UPDD can sync calibration once the system is set into Portrait. Given that UPDD does not know when the screen is rotated, the rotate logic is triggered when the video resolution is set in the rotated mode to represent Portrait mode does not happen automatically as one would expect (e.g x 768 is changed to 768 x 1024). See Rotate document for additional rotate information. Calibration settings The calibration dialog is used to set the calibration settings for the current device. Shows/selects the current calibration style. Each device can have more that one calibration style which can be calibrated independently. Calibration styles can be invoked/switched from an application, a toolbar or the UPDD activator. e.g. a whiteboard device may be used as a whiteboard or in projected mode to show a large desktop. Two calibration modes can be defined, whiteboard and projected and calibrated when used in those modes. The appropriate 6

calibration style can then be invoked when required, thus avoiding the need to constantly recalibrate when switching usage. Add a new calibration style. Remove the selected calibration style. Indicates the number of calibration points. The number of points determines the calibration pattern used. 2 points uses the raw pointer device data, 4, 9 and 25 uses a calibration algorithm best suited to non-linear data whereas the other patterns are best suited to linear data. If the device supports EEprom calibration storage, and the EEProm option is enabled in this dialog then the number of calibration points available will be restricted to those allowed by EEprom calibration. Using 4 points or more allows the driver to automatically determine the orientation of the touch screen and caters for rotated video in cases where the driver has not automatically adjusted for rotation and for these reasons it is highly recommended that 4 points or more are used. Indicates the percentage margin in from the edge of the visual display area from which to draw the calibration points. Specifies the number of seconds to wait for a calibration touch before canceling the calibration procedure. 0 = no timeout. If shown implies that calibration data can be stored in the controllers EEPROM. If enabled the calibration data is stored on the controller. In some case this will effect the calibration options available. E.g. some EEPROM storage procedures will dictate the number and position of the calibration points. If enabled a calibration check dialog is shown at the end of the calibration procedure. The calibration confirm button must be selected (with the touch screen!) if the new calibration data is to be used. If enabled a beep will be generated on calibration touch. Once the calibration settings have been defined as required the device can be calibrated by invoking the calibrate option from the UPDD Console control area, as shown below: Invoke calibration procedure for the current device. Calibration points are shown to be touched. The ESC key can be used to cancel calibration if required. Calibration will timeout if calibration points are not touched within the specific timeout period. Toolbar definitions This facility was finalized (for Windows) in version but is not enabled within all builds. Toolbars with restricted functionality are available in Mac OS X. None are currently implemented in Linux. Define, configure and calibrate touch toolbars. A toolbar is an area on the touch screen that acts independently from the main calibrated video area, as shown below: 7

A toolbar can simply be used to mask off areas of the calibrated video area or they can be used to trigger an event. A toolbar event can be associated with a UPDD Toolbar function or functions written in external applications. Each toolbar can have any number of cells. The cursor does not move from its current position when a toolbar is touched so toolbars can also be used to mask off areas of the main display calibrated area if required. UPDD Toolbar s, which are tailored to individual operating systems, can be used to invoke a UPDD utility (such us on-screen annotation), generate virtual keys, invoke applications, playback macros (recorded keystrokes and mouse usage), to rotate the display area, to display on-screen keyboards etc. Toolbars can be positioned anywhere on a touch screen as suits requirements. Toolbars that reside outside the main touchscreen / video display area are normally referred to as the touch surround area. Toolbars cells that reside within the video display area can also have a bitmap displayed (Windows only at time of writing) within the cell to cater for an on-screen visual reference. Bitmaps can also be associated to toggled or touched cell states so there can be visual feedback on cell activation. Toolbars can be calibrated individually or defined such their position is relative to the main video calibration area. More information is available in the UPDD Toolbar document. Shows current toolbar and allows selection of a different toolbar if more than one defined. Visual image of toolbar layout. Restricted to a maximum of 50 cells. Yellow indicates current cell. Shows number and position of current cell. Shows action associated with current cell. In this example, touching the toolbar cell will invoke the start menu in a Windows system. Add a toolbar. Remove selected toolbar. Calibrate toolbar. General toolbar settings. Name Grid Placement Attributes Follows rotate: Show cells: Enabled: Dragable: Highlight cells: Activate first: Colours: Allows name to be changed Defines number of cells and layout Defines position on the touch screen Defined general settings as below: Indicates if toolbar rotates with the desktop For desktop cells indicates a frame is drawn around all cells Indicates if toolbar is active or currently inactive. Can be dragged to new position with stationary touch For desktop cells indicates the frame is highlighted when cell is touched. Indicates what cell is activate on pen up, either first or last touched Indicates frame and cell fill colour Define/change selected cell options. Indicate what action, if any, is to be performed when the cell is touched. E.g setting a cell action to generate a virtual key, vk_lwin, will invoke the Windows start menu. Saves current toolbar definition to a toolbar settings file Imports a toolbar definition from a toolbar settings file General Hardware Click Mode Properties Calibration Toolbars Status Device diagnostics and status information Shows device status and allows for driver and controller re-initialization along with test functions. Controller list The UPDD Console shows the current device and the status information is related to this device. The controller is listed in black if the device is available or red if there is a potential problem. If displayed in red then for USB this usually means the device is unplugged. If serial, this usually means the com port is not available, either because it does not exist or is in use by another driver, or the initialization macro failed. In the case of a macro failure the device could still be functioning. 8

In the following example the driver is handling three touch controllers, two USB that are plugged in and working and a serial device which is associated with a serial port that is unavailable: Shows the actual controller type in use irrespective of the name given to it in the UPDD Console. Indicates if the device is enabled at the UPDD level. The enabled setting is held in the UPDD Console or, for Windows, the UPDD system tray. Applications can also enable or disable the device using the UPDD programming interface. This is shown if a controller is initialized by the driver. The initializing sequence is held in a format known as a UPDD Macro, which usually consists of firmware commands that are sent to the controller. The macro is shown, and can be edited, in the UPDD Advance Console. The status of the macro processing is shown as follows: Indicates the macro was sent to the device and the ACK received. Indicates the macro was sent to the device but the driver is not expecting a response so cannot indicate the success of the controller initialization. The init macro contains an ACK statement but a valid acknowledgement was not seen from the device within the specified time. In all the above status the serial device will be listed in black to indicate it is likely that the device is working. A red cross indicates that the macro could not be performed as an error was encountered during controller initialization. The most likely cause is that the specified hardware resource(s) are not available or already in use by another process or the device is unplugged. Indicates that the setting of RTS and CTS failed. Some controllers use these settings as flow control so these lines are toggled as a matter of course. This error can occur if the serial port does not fully support the RS232 protocol, such as when using a non conforming USB serial adaptor or other type of virtual com port Sync errors indicate that the driver is experiencing some form of error with the hardware port or received data packets. This value should be zero or very low. Any high counts will imply an error is occurring that may affect performance of the pointer device. This could indicate the controller is running at a different baud rate to that defined in UPDD settings or the controller is transmitting some data packets not recognized by the driver. This function reinitializes the controller. The macro, if defined, is sent to the controller. This option resets the sync error count. Only enabled if error count > 0 This function reloads the driver. This could take a number of seconds to perform. Invoke the test utility. Invoke the test utility with drawing grid. Dump driver settings to a file. The file is useful for support purposes but can also be used in subsequent installs to define the initial settings. 9
