3 Streaming Generalized search Subject/Grade search Content Standards Preview window: Check out other tabs in the preview window on the home page. Create an RSS feed My Builder Tools Teacher Center Searching For Videos Let s search for butterfly. Try all three ways. Often it may be better to use the generalized search. And look in grades above and below yours for content.

4 Downloading Three formats: Windows Media, Quicktime, Flash Windows Media: Use this for general showing of clips or for closed captions. Closed captions are great for young readers or ESL students. See additional handout for setting up your Windows Media Player to view Closed Captioning on clips. Quicktime: Use this format if you are planning on importing your video clips into the IPods. (Note: For copyright purposes, you cannot leave the video clip on the IPods. It must be deleted afterwards.) Make sure ITunes is opened and movies are selected. From File menu, scroll down to Add File to Library. Browse to where your file is located. Once you see your file in the ITunes browser, you can sync your IPods. Note: Only certain teachers in each building are allowed to sync. You may check out the cart with the IMac and IPods. Go ahead download and add the movie to the ITunes Browser, but you will have to notify those in charge of syncing to get your video clip onto the IPods.

5 Flash: The flash format is great for embedding into a Smartboard document, especially if you download the video clip in various segments. Each segment could be put on a different page followed by pertinent questions about that clip. Open up Smart Notebook. Under the Insert Menu, scroll down to Flash Video File. Browse to where your file is located and open to insert. There are many things you can do to pretty it up. Hint: Lock down your video file and the top blue title bar on it will not show. While on the subject of Smartboard, did you know that if you choose to download clips rather than an entire video, you could use Smart Player to create a playlist?

6 This gives you several more options to streamline your instruction. Note: You can only download in WMV format to use Smart Video Player. Downloading VS Streaming Most of the times you do NOT want to stream the videos right off of Discovery s website. It s like running a six cylinder car on 4 cylinders. Some of the newer videos Discovery are adding however, are not available for downloading. If you run into this, then you can stream. Make sure you are streaming in the lowest size format. Usually this is WMV. Using the video in instruction Would you read a book to your class that you have never previewed? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Preview all video clips before using them with your class. Provide the students with reasons to focus attention. Think in terms of teaching reading: Use the DRTA.

7 RSS Feeds I add them to my igoogle page which is my home page on my personal computer. My Builder Tools To use this feature you will first need to enter in a class. Find My Classrooms in the top right hand corner of the page.

8 Assignment Builder First, you will want to preview and add a selected clip to your My Content. Click on Create New Assignment and select your options. Click Save and Continue. A window will appear asking you to determine the location of your assignment. You may wish to put the assignment with the video.

9 Now you can fill the instructions for your assignment and select the video to watch.

10 Next list your goals or skills, maybe even your SOL #s. You can delete any section you wish or you can add more. You also have the choice to hide any section from the students. Then hit Select your class and click on the tab labeled Assign by Code or URL. The easiest is to copy the URL down and use Net Op to send it to the students or save it in your Share Folder. You can also create writing prompts and quizzes in the same manner.

My Content This is your online library of DE resources you have located and want to use year after year. Copyright only allows you to save your files on your hard drive for one year.
