1 Your ed1stop account can be used on an ipad or tablet. This handout will highlight the resources in ed1stop that can be used on the ipad. However, ipads are not compatible with websites that rely on Flash. If your school has a subscription to BrainPOP through ed1stop, the BrainPOP APPS will need to be downloaded onto each ipad, and you will access BrainPOP from the Apps. See Page 5. Creating Quick Access to ed1stop Create an Icon (Handout is based on ios 6.1.3) Select the Safari Browser icon, and type ed1stop.net in the Google Search Field or type in the URL box. Once the page has loaded on the ipad, click on the bookmark icon at the top of the screen, and select Add to Home Screen. A new window box appears, name the icon ed1stop and then click the Add button. The ed1stop icon will be placed in an available spot and can be moved to any place on the ipad that makes sense for the user. When the user clicks on the new ed1stop icon, it will immediately load the log-in page and you can enter your username and password. Discovery Education Streaming Subscription Service The Discovery Streaming site has been totally revamped and no longer contains Flash objects so it now works very well on an ipad. Look for videos the same way you do on the computer, but if time is at a premium, save videos that you want to show into the My Content area, for quick access or in the new Quick List Feature. Once you find a video you want to show if it doesn t play check your Settings. 2 The following window will appear, check the radio button for either QuickTime or H.264. Save your settings, you do not need to do this on each video. Videos can NOT be downloaded from Discovery onto ipads directly without an APP. See Page 6 Note: Since movies are being streamed through Wifi, they could take up bandwidth on the schools network. Saving Photos From Discovery Photos can be saved onto the ipad and they will be stored in the Photo App. Open a photo in the preview window. Todownloadphoto,taplightlyinthecenter oftheimage,untilthesaveimagebox appears, SelectSaveImage,theimagewillsaveinthe PhotosApp. Saveseveralimagesforaproject,andthengo tothephotoappandarrangephotosin Albums. Organizing Photos on ipad OpentheiPadPhotoApp,andselectAlbums,clickontheeditbutton. TapthePlusicontocreateanewalbum namethealbumthensave. ClickonEdittoaddphotostotheAlbum. ClickontheAddPhotosbutton,taponceoneachphotothatyouwanttoaddtothe newalbum,selectedphotoswillhaveabluecirclewithacheckmark.. Copy Text From an Article Tap your finger on any line of text, a little magnifying glass appears, with the option to get a definition of a word or copy the text. Definition only works when only one word is selected. Once one word is selected you can highlight as much of the text as you want and copy it the clipboard. Paste the text into any Note taking App, like Notes or Evernote, or a writing App like Keynote

3 Adding Photos to the ipad AP Images (Subscription Service) Project Help Tab AP Images has several million images that can be used and downloaded onto an ipad for instructional use. AP Images is located on the Project Help tab. Launch AP Images, under Editorial Images click on the triangle to bring up the Historical Photos archive. Enter a keyword search, for example: Amelia Earhart. This might take a few seconds for the results to show. The search field now shows that there are 144 photos. To save a photo tap lightly in the middle of a photo to bring up the enlarged version. Press lightly and hold your finger inside the image until you see the Save Image window, then select Save Image. Pics4Learning Photos (Free Service) Project Help Tab Pics4Learning can be found under the Project Help tab. Enter a search term right in the channel, and then click on Find It. ThiswilltakeyoutoPics4Learningsite, andwillshowallphotosthatmatchthe keyword. Tap once on the image to enlarge, and then tap again to load the image on it s own page. Press lightly in the middle of the photo and hold until the Save Image appears and then select Save Image. Close the image window and repeat to save other photos from Pics4Learning

4 Resources Under the Reference Tab Calisphere Photos and Text Calisphere World of Primary Resources from the University of California. Calisphere is a public service project of the California Digital Library. More than 200,000 digitized items including photographs, documents, newspaper pages, political cartoons, works of art, diaries, and transcribed oral histories reveal the diverse history and culture of California and it s role in national and world history. Wordsmyth The Premier Educational Dictionary-Thesaurus Students can search for words and definitions. All sound files are wav formats, to hear the word use the features of the ipad. Tab once on a word to highlight then select Speak. TumbleBooks From the Napa County Public Library The Napa County Public Library subscribes to Tumblebooks for their patrons. To access TumbleBooks bookmark this page on your ipad: From the list of Reading Links select TumbleBooks. The following message will appear (TumbleBooks will know when it is being accessed from a Mobile Device) click OK. Only ipad friendly stories will appear in the selections. Note: You can also use the Bookmark feature in ed1stop. Students will be able to use the link and get to a variety of digital books

5 ipad Access for BrainPOP Combo Subscribers BrainPOP has developed an APP for BrainPOP, BrainPOP Jr. and BrainPOP Spanish that works on all ipads and ipod Touch. Not all content is available through the Apps, only movies and quizzes. What You Need: Go to the App Store, either on the ipad or via itunes on the computer. Search for the BrainPOP Apps. All three Apps should show up under both the ipad Apps and the iphone Apps. Download all three BrainPOP Apps. Log in to the BrainPOP App: The App interface is slightly different than the online version, to LOG IN and have access to all movies not just the Free movies follow these steps: Launch the BrainPOP App Below the BrainPOP Icon right by Moby, it says Free Access to gain Full Access click on LOG IN Enter the username and password provided by the school administrator. Note: This is not your portal log in, request this special log in from your County office. Click the LOGIN button FullAccesswillnowbedisplayed insteadoffreeaccess. Note:AsLongasnooneusestheLogOutbutton,theAppwillmaintaintheusername andpassword. Subscriberswillusethesamelog inforallthreeapps. IMPORTANTNOTE:Sharing the username and password for the BrainPOP ipad Apps with anyone outside of the school or non-subscribers, is strictly prohibited and is against the user and licensing agreement between the school and BrainPOP LLC. Posting the username and password on the Internet in any form is also prohibited

6 Free App for Downloading Movies onto ipads We know that when movies are streamed they do tend to take up a lot of the Network Bandwidth, and some schools don t have a lot to spare. If it s an issue at your school you might want to consider a Free APP that allows you to download the Discovery videos onto your ipad. UbiDisk Is a Browser Utility and Download Manager It s Free and is pretty easy to use. Once you have downloaded the UbiDisk App, locate the App or your ipad and launch. The Main Interface is simple enough, click on the downward arrow icon. Type in the ed1stop address: Hit Go. Log-in with your username and password. Select Discovery from the Curriculum Support tab. Search for a video or if you have videos in My Content go there and locate the video. Once the video has loaded in the preview window, tap and hold your finger in the middle of the video until the Download Video window appears, select Download Video. The video will immediately start to download. You should hear a little chime once it is done downloading. Use the Back Button to go to Main Interface. Select the Folder icon, all downloaded files go to this folder. The Download folder will list today s date, open the folder. A Video Reel indicates which files are videos, you can also download, MP3 and PDF s. You won t need a Wifi connection to watch videos. To Play Videos, tap on a title and the video will launch. You can create folder to keep your video collection organized
